“Here, we’ll sit here.” Mike chose a table in the corner, half hidden from the rest of the restaurant by a screen.
Ariel gave him a look and he shrugged.
“It’s a pretty nice place,” Ariel said looking around. The atmosphere was divine, mahogany gleamed by the light of the candles and the carpet was decadently soft under their feet. The walls were hung with carpets reminiscent of some Turkish palace and candles flickered in wistful seduction. The waiters moved silently and with grace, the bustle of a restaurant only visible through a swinging door to the kitchen.
“I love it. Thanks for bringing me here.” Ariel said leaning back in her chair. She noticed that Mike’s lashes were very long.
“Don’t thank me yet. Thank me after you’ve tasted the divine food.” Mike replied handing her a menu.
“Order for me.” Ariel said looking around, noting the familiar famous faces all engaged in conversation and dinner. “Surprise me.”
“Are you sure?” Mike hesitated. He didn’t want to mess up an almost date.
“Sure. And I’ll order for you.” Ariel smiled like a cat, snatching the menu from him.
“If you order octopus, I’ll kill you.” Mike warned. Ariel smiled sweetly.
The waiter came up to get their order and Mike ordered for Ariel, warning the waiter to make sure the food was just spicy enough. “And strawberry cheesecake for dessert.” He added grinning as Ariel perked up.
“And for you, ma’am? What can I get for you?” The waiter fawned over Ariel and Mike frowned.
“Get me the tandoori dish but please exclude the lemons, and could you make it with less salt than you usually do? Oh and get me the chocolate mousse for dessert.” She finished off with a flourish.
“See? I still remember that you hate lemons.” Ariel told Mike. She looked over at the entrance and then grabbed Mike on the hand. “Isn’t that the girl who was all over the news last week for being discovered with that director?”
Mike turned and looked and indeed it was.
“It must be the boobs.” Ariel continued, nodding.
“What?” Mike said, completely lost.
“Her boobs. Don’t you think they are her main attraction?” Ariel said.
“You want me to look at her boobs?” Mike sputtered.
“Didn’t you anyway? I thought that was the first thing guys noticed. She is quite blessed unlike me.” Ariel looked mournfully down at her own chest.
Mike tried his best not to follow her gaze to her chest, knowing that she’d kick his ass. He did his best but unwittingly his gaze moved down to her chest and then immediately up again. To his surprise, Ariel was looking at him with an expectant expression.
“Well, how do they compare?” She asked in a matter of fact tone.
Mike’s eyes widened and to his horror, a blush started creasing his cheeks crimson. Ariel noticing his discomfort let out a peal of laughter and the more he blushed, the harder she laughed.
Taking a deep breath finally, she said, “What would people think of the debonair Mike being so prim?”
Mike sniffed haughtily and started to reply but his response was interrupted and forgotten by the arrival of the waiter and the food.
They were enjoying the food when a snide voice interrupted.
“Well, well, well… what do we have here? Yi Chen and Jun Xiang enjoying a “friendly” dinner together.” Belinda drawled, her tone belying her words.
Ariel lowered her fork and narrowed her eyes.
“Yes Belinda, a friendly dinner. That’s what one usually does with friends. Oh wait, but you wouldn’t know, would you? People like you don’t have friends.” Ariel said her words razor sharp. She had had enough of being nice to people who would exploit her life and activities for their own profit.
“What are you doing here?” Mike said, imperceptibly signaling a waiter.
“It’s a free country. If I want dinner, I’ll come have it.” Belinda smiled, her mouth curled as though she had smelled something really bad.
“I’m sorry, Ma’am. You’re going to have to leave now.” The proprietor of the restaurant and Mike’s friend said to Belinda, in an amiable tone, taking hold of her hand firmly, letting her know that her insolence wasn’t welcome.
Belinda’s face flushed with the humiliation of being kicked out of the restaurant. She furiously hissed at Mike and Ariel. “You wait; you think you are so safe in your smug thrones. You won’t know what hit you when I’m done with you. Don’t underestimate me. Be scared. Enjoy the popularity while you still can because soon, the tables will turn. Soon.”
After she left, Mike and Ariel stared at each other and then Ariel said, “Where’s dessert? After being visited by the Wicked Witch, I am in dire need of succor.”
