Chapter 60

Lemons

Tuesday: Monologue

“Say something, Tuesday. Speak to me. How am I supposed to know what to do when you won’t say a word?” Daniel shook Tuesday his frustration spilling over into his actions.

“You don’t cry. You don’t scream. You don’t yell. Do you have any feelings at all? Do you? Speak to me, please baby. I don’t know how to help you when you won’t tell me what’s wrong.” Daniel was dangerously close to tears himself.

He stalked to the window and then turned to look at Tuesday, who sat hunched in herself, her bony shoulders, her bloody soles, her eyes staring unseeing in front of her.

Suddenly she turned to Daniel and started talking, her voice hoarse and low, her words rapid, falling over each other at a chance to be heard.

“I keep thinking that tomorrow will be better. That I will wake up and be magically cleansed. I don’t cry because I taste my own tears on my tongue every time I breathe. It’s a sort of a damp ‘I wish I hadn’t’ taste. I am bereaved, you know? Deluged by grief. But I take it all in, each blow, each thing. I take it all in. Cuz I who have weathered hurricanes, I shall weather this too.”

She got up and walked to the window beside him.
“Sometimes it feels that I am a boat. Broken. And water-grief is pouring in. Will I drown in myself?”

She stared at him for a soul second. Then shrugging, she continued. “Let’s not be pedantic. Give credit to lemons because they are due. And toast your toes in the slippery sunshine. And don’t be jealous with your words. Lavish them. Flaunt them.”

Tuesday wrapped her arms around Daniel.

“Wrap yourself around me. Because I want to breathe you in. I want my heart to beat to the rhythm of yours. I want all of it and I want it today. I want to count the scratches I lay on your body. I want to rejoice in this feeling. Rejoice now because…because heartbreak gives no warning.”

“Cut.”

Ariel and Mike stood in that position long after the director had called cut. They were still wrapped up in the emotions of Tuesday and Daniel. Finally Ariel broke away from Mike. Her eyes were heavy with tears and Mike without thinking, reached up to wipe away one that was leaking from the corner of one eye.

The entire crew present applauded them on their performance and Mike looked up startled. Angela gave them a big smile.

“Thank you.”

Author's note: Man, woman and little mosquitoe, I'm tired. Kay, so Tuesday, we move back into the real world after this, ah, real per se, um, as in Mike and Ariel's world and out of Tuesday. Oh whatever, I dont know what I'm saying, just that the next chapter will...er....be very interesting.
