He turned abruptly. “You see me?” He caught hold of her hand and brought it to his chest, against his racing heart. “You feel me?”
“I am flesh and blood, Tuesday. I exist, I hurt, I laugh, I cry. I am flesh and blood! Not made of ice, not bound behind some wall.” He stopped talking abruptly and took a single deep breath.
“I can’t keep pretending that your coldness doesn’t hurt me, doesn’t confuse me. That I don’t look at you and wonder if you see me, if you love me, if you even know the meaning of the word. Your mother just died, Tuesday!”
He shook her by the shoulders.
“She’s dead. The woman who birthed you and carried you within her is dead. She died without once looking at you, seeing you, realizing your existence, Tuesday, she’s dead.”
“And what do you say? ‘It’s okay; it was time for her to go.’ How can you be so callous? Do you not feel anything at all? Cry for God’s sakes. Your grandmother left because her daughter is dead and she doesn’t accept you as her own. Your sister ran away. You have a little baby to take care of. Sugar needs emotions, Tuesday. She doesn’t need a marble statue, she needs a MOTHER!”
“How will you wipe her tears when you have never shed one yourself? How will you hold her to your chest and love her when you have never loved? Cry Tuesday. Cry for the mother you never had, the love you never got, cry.”
Tuesday remained faced away from him, silent, marble like. Daniel looked her way.
He ran a hand through his hair and said very, very quietly.
“I don’t think I can be with you anymore, Tuesday. I love you more than life itself but until you can cry, I can’t be with you. Because if I stay with you, I’ll end up hurting you just to make you cry, just to see if you can. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
And he opened the door and walked away.
