Chapter 67

The Moment.

“I want greasy food!” Joe announced grandly.

“It’ll go straight to your hips.” Ariel replied.

“I’ll just get sexier.” Joe smirked and Ariel rolled her eyes.

A week had passed since Joe had returned from Greece. In that time Ariel had started to approach the topic of “liking” several times only to chicken out at the most crucial point.

“Today I’ll ask him.” Ariel had muttered to herself as she waited for Joe at the curb. “I’ll definitely ask him!”

“Ask me what?” Joe had popped out of nowhere as was his wont and Ariel had lost her courage again.

“Oh, how the weather was in Greece!” Ariel had replied in a rushed while Joe had looked at her quizzically.

Ariel kept sneaking suspicious looks at Joe as they went through a drive through and then returned to Joe’s house.

“Parents are out on a date. At their age. Honestly.” Joe said unlocking the door and holding it open for Ariel to walk through.

“That means we are alone together.” Ariel gulped. They had been alone together many times but now it held greater meaning, more depth. They walked into the living room and Ariel sat down on the couch.

“Make yourself comfortable. I’ll be right back with the plates” Joe said and disappeared.

Ariel’s heart started pounding irrationally. Her palms got clammy and she felt nauseous.

Joe came back and sat down beside Ariel. Ariel immediately moved away.

Joe looked over at her, a fry midway to his mouth, “What did you do that for?”

Ariel feigned innocence and arched an eyebrow. “Do what?”

“Move away.”

“Me?”

“No, Krusty the Clown.”

“Oh okay.”

“Sagwa, of course you.”

“You are imagining things.” Ariel said stuffing her mouth full of fries.

“Hmm. Okay.” Joe moved nearer her. Ariel fought not to react and move away, squirming.

“So I saw the posters for Tuesday.” Joe said conversationally.

Ariel blushed. Somehow the posters which were now plastered all over the city made her feel self conscious. The intimacy of the poses, the nature of the photographs.

“Alan is a genius.” Joe continued, seemingly unaware of Ariel’s distress.

Ariel looked at him closely, trying to discern whether he was jealous.

Joe noticed her looking at him and asked, “What?”

“Nothing.” Ariel replied quickly, looking away.

“You’ve been behaving strangely all week.” Joe commented.

“The pot’s calling the kettle black?” Ariel retorted.

Joe looked pained. “What’s up with Mike?” He then asked.

“What do you mean?”

“I met him just before he left for Japan and he was acting funny too.”

“I’m not kept updated as to the nature of He Jun Xiang’s frequently changing moods.” Ariel said stiffly. She was still mad at Mike.

Joe watched her closely and then sighed loudly.

“Oh no!” He moaned.

“What?” Ariel looked alarmed.

“You guys fought again, didn’t you?”

“We did not!” Ariel said indignantly.

Joe gave her a look.

“Okay so maybe we had words.” Ariel amended.

“Words?” Joe raised an eyebrow.

“Loud words.” Ariel nodded. “Loud angry words.”

Joe sighed again.

“Tell Uncle Joe all about it.” He finally said, putting his burger back onto the plate.

Ariel’s eyes widened. Did she dare to? But then, how could she not?

Ariel took a deep breath, squared her shoulders and opened her mouth to speak.
