The girl who had grabbed her was stocky, dressed in a short plaid skirt and white shirt. A throwback to the high school years? Ariel disengaged herself from them immediately and smiled. She was spoiling for a fight and perhaps, she’d finally get one.
“And how may I help you?” Ariel raised an eyebrow, using the same tone she would for guests who’d have come for dinner.
The girl look surprised and then nodded. Three others came out from corners (like rats where they’d been slinking, Ariel thought) and surrounded her.
“Oh, the cavalry has arrived, has it?” Ariel went into her battle stance, poised to fight.
“We don’t like you.” The stocky girl said.
“Why?” Ariel asked, genuinely puzzled.
“We saw you with Jiro.” One of the others said in a high pitched whiny voice, greatly resembling Jiro’s, Ariel thought.
“So?”
“So we want you to stay away from him.” The stocky one said, her dulcet tones were more like running nails on tinned roof. Ouch. Yeah.
“I don’t have problem with that however what I do have a problem with is you. And you. And you, you, you.” Ariel could feel the adrenalin waking up nerves and muscles that had been in slumber way too long.
Just then Rosalinda walked out from around the corner. “Well, well, well. What do we have here, Maria?” She addressed the stocky girl and Ariel saw Maria’s face start to pale.
“Do you ladies not know that this girl here is my friend? You do know that right?” Gone was the nice Rosalinda, well, whatever was present of her to begin with. “And knowing that you still dared to challenge her? Hmm…does this mean you are challenging me, Maria?”
“N-n-no!” Maria had lost all her bravado. Pity, Ariel grumbled to herself.
“Have you forgotten everything I’ve taught you?” Rosalinda walked all the way over to Maria.
“I’m sorry.” The girl blubbered, her companions had fled.
“You won’t bother her again, will you?” Rosalinda reached out and grabbed the girl’s jaw, turning her face towards herself. “Cuz you know if you do, I will remove the smile from your lips with a scalpel. You know that right?” Rosalinda purred to the girl who paled even further than Ariel had thought was possible.
“You can go now.” Rosalinda let go and smiled amiably. The girl fled as though for her life.
“I could have taken care of myself.” Ariel said to Linda.
“I know. But doesn’t it feel better when someone else takes care of you?” She smiled sideways at Ariel then linked her arm through Ariel’s. “You can buy me lunch as a thank you.”
“You go ahead. I forgot to get my book from the Professor.” Ariel said.
“Okay, if you are not there in ten, I’ll come looking again.” Rosalinda walked off.
Ariel turned to an open seemingly empty classroom and poked her head inside. “Váyase, Rafael. Yo no le necesito.” (Go away Rafael, I don’t need you.)

“Mina, you are the most beautiful woman on earth.” Ariel said.
“No, Ariel. I’m still not talking to you.” Mina replied huffily.
“Sebastian is the most beautiful car ever.” Ariel made puppy eyes. She could see Mina’s resolve wavering. “And…” She scrunched up her face. “Fei Lun Hai is still…learning.”
“Fine. I’ll drop you off at work.” Mina relented with a brilliant smile and Ariel sighed and uncrossed her fingers. She was supposed to meet Calvin at the house and from there go spend an evening full of ghetto wit. Not that she was an expert on ghetto but what the hell, as long as they paid her, she could add a little slang.
Mina put on a Fei Lun Hai CD as they drove and Ariel struggled to give directions without crying at the cheesy songs blaring (extra loud) on the radio. Mina still had no idea that Ariel was ‘teaching’ her idols and Ariel preferred it that way. When they arrived at the house, Ariel planned to skip out of the car and wave goodbye immediately to Mina without any run-ins of the perverted kind. Mina was too innocent and ideal to be subjected to the reality of her idols. The girl probably still believed in Santa Claus.
Mina turned Sebastian into the driveway of the house and Ariel turned to her with a thank you smile ready at her lips. Saying goodbye, she grabbed her bag and got out of the car. Inwardly praying that Mina would hurry up and leave, Ariel started walking up the pathway. Just then another car turned into the driveway, effectively blocking Sebastian. Ariel turned back and groaned out loud.
“The spawn of the devil, the bloody celery.” Ariel muttered under her breath as she stalked down the path to where Chun was getting out of his car.
And of course Mina, seeing who it was, got out of her car just as quick. Her eyes were wide in her pixie face, mouth working without any sound coming out. Mina glanced at Ariel and then at Chun. Then again.
“And who is this beautiful lady?” Chun drawled, that oily bastard. Ariel narrowed her eyes and stepped closer to Mina protectively.
“Don’t answer him, Mina. Maybe if we ignore him, he’ll go away.” Ariel replied snidely.
“Ariel!” Mina said in a shocked voice. “I’m sorry. She doesn’t mean to be so rude.”
Chun glanced at Ariel in an amused manner. “Au contraire, I think she means to be very rude. Don’t you, sweetheart?”
Ariel glared daggers at him. She didn’t know why but there was such a thick atmosphere of danger pressing on her all of a sudden.
Suddenly Mina whipped out a book and pen and held it up to him, stars shining in her eyes. “Will you please give me your autograph? I’m your biggest fan!”
Chun smiled sweetly. “Yes, of course.” He wrote “To the most beautiful woman on the earth, regards, Wu Chun.”
His attention was caught by Sebastian (Sebastian was rather eye catching) and Chun expressed his awe at the car. “This is a work of art!” Ugh. Ariel shook her head. If he said anything more, she might gag.
“You really think so?” Mina lit up like a Christmas tree.
“Is this your work?” Chun said, leaning nearer to Mina, his words terribly intimate. They were both ignoring Ariel.
“Y-y-yes.” Mina said breathlessly and Ariel scowled. She inserted herself between Chun and Mina.
“Mina has to go to work now. Move your car.” She said abruptly.
“You have to leave so soon?” Chun said pouting.
“No.” Mina shook her head and Ariel smiled a big fake smile.
“Yes she does.” Ariel replied, grabbing Chun’s hand. Chun’s fingers immediately curled around hers and Ariel realized what she had done. She tried to disengage her hand from his but he held on tightly. Mina followed their gestures and her mouth tightened.
“I see how it is. Ariel, you fooled me. I seriously thought you didn’t like him.” Mina said out loud while a hundred different words screamed from her eyes.
“Move your car, Chun.” Ariel was getting annoyed. Chun brought her hand which was still tightly entwined with his up to his mouth and gave it a kiss.
“Okay.” He smiled and let go. He left to move his car and Ariel turned to Mina.
“Mina listen, he’s just kidding around. I can’t even stand him.” Ariel said hastily.
“Whatever, Ariel. I don’t want to talk about this.” Mina got into Sebastian and roared off.
“You are such a bastard.” Ariel yelled at Chun who was getting out of his car and walked up the pathway and into the house. Calvin was just putting on his shoes when Ariel barreled past him into the bathroom. He peeked in curiously into the bathroom.
“What are you doing?” He asked frowning.
“Can’t you see? Washing my hands.” Ariel replied scrubbing at her hands with soap.
“Why?” Calvin crossed his arms and leaned against the door.
“It got touched by the lips of a disgustingly disease ridden monster.” Ariel replied loudly enough that Chun who was passing by in the hallway heard.
“I think she means you.” Calvin told Chun helpfully. He had seen everything that happened.
“Let’s go, Calvin. I don’t have all day, y’noe.” Ariel said drying her hands on a towel and walking out. Calvin looked at Chun, shrugged and then followed.
-------
“You brought me to a bar?” Calvin said sounding happy. “Man, Jiro said that you were a first class bitch but you can’t be too bad if you brought me to a bar.”
They were parked outside Candy’s, the hottest bar and lounge in town. Only the trendiest and the richest got in here. Actually Ariel was just curious about the place and had wanted to see it. She realized that she had unwittingly brought Calvin to the one place he had probably really wanted to go.
They walked into the bar and immediately everyone’s gazes were on them. Calvin with his white shirt and black leather pants was certainly beautiful enough and Ariel complemented him perfectly with her slinky halter neck top (black of course) coupled with black slinky pants. Her hair was silky and straight and caught up in pony tail baring her neck. Her makeup was minimal and she looked clean and fresh. Unlike all the other, made-up women also patronizing the bar.
They were shown to a table by one of the waiters and given a menu.
“I’ll have…” Calvin started speaking eagerly, not even bothering to look at the menu.
“He’ll have pineapple juice.” Ariel finished for him nicely.
“Pineapple juice.” Calvin echoed without realizing what he was saying. Then. “Pineapple juice???!!!! What the hell?!”
“And I’ll have a margarita. Thank you, that will be all.” Ariel finished ordering and the waiter left before Calvin could say anything more.
“Pineapple juice? I want a drink!” Calvin said a bit loudly.
“This is not a social outing, Mr. Chen.” Ariel said calmly. “I’m your teacher and I’ll be teaching you and I can’t teach you if you are inebriated.”
Calvin scowled but then he said sulkily. “The atmosphere here is too nice to not drink.”
Ariel looked around. He was right. The ambience of the place was amazing. There were candelabras on the sides and the tables all gleamed mahogany. The lights were low and complemented the glow from the candlelight. It was all intimate and suggested a lowering of inhibitions made possible by the availability of the alcohol. “It’s tight.”
Calvin looked alarmed. “What’s tight?” Then, without stopping to hear her reply, he continued. “My pants are tight? But how did you know? Be honest, do I look fat? I don’t, right?”
Ariel sighed. Just then the waitress brought their drinks over. Calvin gave her an appreciative look. Ariel gave him a look in return.
“Stop looking at me like that!” Calvin grumbled.
“Like what?” Ariel asked, giving him her best “you are a turd” look.
“Like…I don’t know!” Calvin banged his hands on the table in frustration. The people on the next table winced. Ariel didn’t. “It makes me feel guilty.”
“Have you done stuff to be guilty of?” Ariel asked in a friendly tone.
Calvin nodded and then took a swig of his pineapple juice.
“And will my looking at you make you stop doing those things that make you feel guilty?”
“Probably not.” Calvin answered honestly.
“Well then, I don’t see any reason to stop looking at you with my guilt inducing gaze.” Ariel said cheerfully.
“At least I’m not as bad as Lao Hu.” Calvin mumbled.
“Who?” Ariel frowned.
“Wu Chun. Tiger… that’s his nickname. For his, ahem, prowess.”
“I see. And why aren’t you as bad as him?”
“He’s been betrothed to some girl ever since he was born and do you see him abstaining from women?” Calvin said.
Just then Wu Chun walked into the bar with a pretty woman on his arm and she wasn’t the woman Ariel had seen before. She was pretty sure it wasn’t “Lina” from the time before either.
“You’ve got a point.” Ariel finally said.
“Damn straight I do.”
“Where is this girl?”
“I guess still in Brunei.”
“Right.” Ariel sipped her margarita.
“So see, I’m much less sinful than Chun.” Calvin smiled looking pleased with himself.
He reached out and grabbed hold of Ariel’s hand. Ariel frowned. She was getting mighty sick of people holding her hand.
“Why are you holding my girlfriend’s hand?” A voice said from the side of their table. “Let go, aight?”
Ariel and Chun looked up to see Arron standing by their table looking annoyed.
Ariel wrenched her hand out of Calvin’s grasp and scowled at Arron. “What are you doing here?”
“Trying to protect you.” Arron replied looking petulant.
“From what?” Ariel looked puzzled.
“From this man-whore.” Arron pulled a chair and sat between Ariel and Calvin.
“Girlfriend?” Calvin asked looking interested.
“He’s delusional.” Ariel replied.
“It’s only a matter of time before you fall for my charms.” Arron grinned. Then sobered and shot Calvin a warning look. “You’d better not have designs on my woman.”
“Your woman?” Ariel couldn’t believe her ears. “You are hella annoying.”
“See, she doesn’t want you, she thinks you are from hell.” Calvin replied. “Eh Arron, do my pants look tight to you?” And he got up to show Arron. Arron threw Ariel a confused look.
“Oh look, there’s Chun.” Calvin sat down again and gestured to the other side of the lounge where Chun was sitting with a blonde, looking to be in intimate conversation. “And damn, he’s with Sonia.”
“Sonia, wasn’t he going out with Jessica?” Arron edged his chair nearer to Ariel when he thought she wasn’t looking.
Ariel gave him the gimlet eye.
“Yeah, he went out with her yesterday. Man, that guy’s a player.” Calvin smirked. All three of them looked over at Chun.
Suddenly a really pretty girl walked up to Chun and his lady friend were sitting and said some words, some angry words. They watched as she took a large glass filled with an icy drink and flung it all over Chun’s face. She said something else and then left.
Ariel couldn’t help it. She burst into peals of laughter which were very loud in the suddenly silent lounge. Chun’s head whipped around to the source of hilarity and his eyes narrowed as they focused on Ariel. Ariel smiled gaily and blew him a kiss.
“That Michelle is a firecracker.” Arron said his arm sliding around the back of Ariel’s chair.
“Lina’s sister? Yeah, poor Chun.” Calvin stretched.
“What goes around comes around.” Ariel nodded.
“What?” The guys asked in unison.
“Justin Timberlake said so. Anyway.” Ariel smacked Arron’s arm. “Since both of you are here, let’s blow this joint and have some wicked fun before the night’s over, aight?”
