It was cold but Ariel barely felt it. The shack was dirty. And not insulated. There were cobwebs around. But Ariel didn’t see any spiders. How did spiders survive the winter? There was a gash on Ariel’s right foot and it had bled until the blood congealed on the sides. It would knit together, that wound when her body remembered she was still alive.
Ariel glanced at the window up in the wall. Her thirteenth birthday. There were stars shining outside. So many. They were high up on the mountain. The stars shone clear and bright. And so happily. Ariel loathed the stars then for daring to shine.
There was a loud whimper from the person in the corner before she started crying. Ariel leaned against the post she was tied to. Ropes bound her to the post and her hands were bound behind her. He had killed her father first. Her weak, loveable father was now lying dead in the corner Ariel refused to look at. His body had started to smell. He was dead. Her father was dead. No matter how many times Ariel said the words; they still tasted wrong in her mouth. How could he be dead? She had just seen him look at her mother with that overwhelming love, just heard him call her his Yi Chen. Her father never called her Ariel. To him she was Yi Chen.
And he was dead.
He had shot her father. The leg. The stomach. The heart. And then the head. He was dead. Blood had splattered her mother; her father’s blood had drenched her mother. She wouldn’t leave his body. She couldn’t accept that he was dead. But He hadn’t been done with that. No. He had violated her mother while Ariel closed her eyes. He had raped her mother right in front of her eyes. Repeatedly. And now her mother lay in the corner bleeding her life away. Bleeding the baby away. Bleeding.
There were footsteps. His footsteps. They were filled with poison. Menace. Ariel was numb. The man was coming back. Oh. He had a limp. It dragged. The door to the shack rattled. Ariel’s mother started wailing, loud sobs.
“Ariel, be strong, baby. You have to be strong, no matter what he does, you have to be strong. You have to survive. Promise me.”
Ariel was far away from her body. The numbness was nice but her mother’s words pierced her and dragged her back. “Mom.” Ariel whispered.
“I told you bitches not to talk!” The man was here. Fear flooded Ariel through. Her entire soul sang with fear. She made keening sounds as she saw him. He was a monster. Smoothly shaved, a face so beautiful that angels would weep over it. He was a monster.
“Leave her alone!” Ariel’s mother burst out.
“Hmm.” The monster pursed his lips. He leant over Ariel and she started breathing loudly, audibly. He chuckled. “Relax. I’m just untying you.” He untied her and Ariel stared at him shocked. She was a slight thing and he could break her in two if he desired. Three. Four. Five and six. Pieces.
Ariel rubbed her hands. And stared at the monster who smiled back at her. Like an angel.
He took out a gun and Ariel’s mother tried to get up, to try to save Ariel. “Leave her alone, you bastard!” She screamed again. The man turned and shot Ariel’s mother. Twice. In the heart. In her womb. Immaculate aim.
The scream broke out of Ariel before she knew that her mouth had opened. She went wild. Clawing at the monster with her hands but of course she was no match for him. He slapped her away as easily as though she were a fly. Her side hit the post and Ariel gasped in extreme pain. The man put the gun down on the ground as he turned over her mother with his two hands.
Ariel had 10 seconds, 5 at the least. She pounced on the gun, the man turned, saw it. He lunged at her but she sprang away. He got up. Unconcerned. She was only a little girl. He could easily overpower her.
“What are you going to do little girl? I killed your mommy just now. See, she’s still bleeding.” He nudged Ariel’s mother with his foot. “I killed your daddy. He stinks, huh?”
“Are you going to kill me?” He smiled sweetly.
Ariel shot him. Her hands were unsteady but she shot him. Five bullets were in the gun. And by the time she was done, five bullets were in the Monster. The heart. The stomach. The head. The leg. The heart. She robbed his face of his smile. His eyes widened in shock but he died amused. The blood splatter hit Ariel right in the face. She was close enough. The blood was warm. Hot.
And then when he had stopped breathing and when Ariel pulled the trigger to empty clicks, she sank to the ground and started screaming.
