Epilogue

Subject: Christmas Party

Ariel,

I know you are a busy woman. I know that, really. But if you don’t come to my Christmas party I am never talking to you again. Ever. And I mean this too. Plus, maybe if you are here, you will scare Jiro off. I tried saying “Moo” every time he appeared in front of me but he has developed this really annoying habit of singing every time I say moo. I have not invited him to the party. Make sure it stays that way. *glare* You know what I mean.
So anyway. Christmas party. Be there. Or die.
Love you,

Rosa.

Subject: Rosa’s freakin’ Crazy!

Ariel,

Can you please convince Rosa that there is no way I am going to travel to England for a stupid Christmas party? She’s talking about selling me off into slavery if I don’t make it. I don’t wanna die yet!

I don’t think I’ll ever have kids. Whatever possessed me to become a teacher is still beyond me. These brats make me want to kiss them and kill them simultaneously. I have a new appreciation for my mother now.

I’ll leave Rosa in your blessed hands.

Ceci.

Subject: I’m married!

Ariel,

I wanted to tell you first. I eloped with Antonio last weekend. Yes, that same unsuitable Antonio that my parents were so against.

Rosa’s going to eat her heart out. I’m the second one to be married.

Mwahaha.

I know! I can’t believe it either! I’ve never been irresponsible in my life. I guess there always firsts for everything!

See you at the Christmas party!

Mrs. De La Cruz.

Babycakes,

I’ve missed you so much. It’s been too long. What I want to know is why you keep rejecting the dramas that I keep having directors forward you. Why, Ariel, WHY? Is it Chun? Is he scared that once you kiss me, you will realize that no one else is the man for you?

That dumb macaroon.

I will be at the party. So you’d better be there too. Haha, I don’t know why I am worrying. It’s Rosa’s party. Of COURSE, you’ll be there. Should I bring my new girlfriend for you to look over? No, on second thought, Chun might steal her too. *sniff*

Oh by the way, can you talk to Rosa for Jiro’s sake? He wants to come to the party and says that Rosa has threatened to hand him over to the authorities if he gate crashes.

Arron.

You can’t escape what life births you for. Running from the destiny that the Fates wove for you with their gnarled fingers is futile. All roads will lead you to the same destination.

Ariel pushed back the chair she had been sitting on and looked around the room she called her working space. There was no trace of Edward left. Not in his rooms. Not in his mansion. Not in the empire he had built up with the blood of many. Oh of course, history documented him. But then, history usually did document unnecessary people. Ariel was certain that in time, precious time he’d be reduced to a footnote in some rarely read textbook.

“Mrs. Wu? The Korean delegation is here.” An assistant says after knocking on the open door respectfully.

“I’ll be there in a moment.” Ariel smiles at the assistant.
Ariel had even eradicated Edward’s name from the world. Getting up, she walked to a full length mirror located in a corner and looked herself over critically. A suit tailored to fit her body, her hair in a prim chignon and light makeup to emphasize elegance. She was haute couture.

“Ariel, hurry up.” Chun said stepping into her office. He was dressed in a pinstriped suit, hair slightly long and full of leonine grace.

“Your tie’s crooked.” Ariel reached up and fixed it. Chun’s eyes immediately darkened at her proximity and his eyes fixated on his target. Ariel smiled crookedly.

“We have people waiting.” She forestalled his kiss with a finger on his lips.

Chun sighed. “Let’s send them home.”

“If you want.” Ariel said easily.

“They’d only come back again.” He grumbled and she nodded.

“Ariel, you know I -.”

“Yeah. I do. Me too.” Ariel slipped her hand into his.
“Let’s go.”

The Korean delegation had been sent over by the Korean government so they could coerce the recently merged empire of the Goh Kiat and Wu conglomerates to invest in the Korean economy. After the death of Edward Lin and the rapid debilitation of Goh Kiat San, their grandchildren had taken over the reins and moved the businesses which were capturing and conquering within the shadows into the light. They were possibly the most powerful duo in the business world right now. There had been whispers that the Empire wasn’t as squeaky clean as it appeared but these whispers were quickly blown away by a thorough investigation of the Empire by various law departments from various countries. Not a single wayward thing had been found.

There had been whispers too about Ariel Wu. Malicious whispers which hinted at her unsuitability to be the head of a business empire and the wife of Goh Kiat Chun. These rumours, speculations had died a quick death however when Ariel had finally stepped out of mourning for her grandfather. She was a grace personified, elegant, soft spoken and dangerous. Wu Chun clearly doted on her, to the extent that she was the only woman he even registered as the opposite sex.

Ariel and Chun stopped outside the conference room.

“Oh yes, we have a Christmas party to attend in England.” Ariel said to Chun, still holding on to his hand.

“I know. I’ve asked the staff to prepare the jet.”

Ariel made to open the door and Chun stopped her. “One second.” He said while dipping his head. He kissed her fervently, feverishly.

“Okay, let’s go in now.” He said after.

“What was that for?” Ariel raised an eyebrow.

“They are all men in there. They’ll be looking at you. I was just staking my claim.” He grinned.

And then both their smiles faded. The people stepping into the conference room, the couple who exuded so much danger and power, who commanded the world so that even leaders looked up to them held no vestige of the playful couple of just a few seconds ago.

There was a fireplace in Ariel’s office. And there was a fire still burning in it. The lights had been turned off but the room glowed, lit by the fire light.
