“Ming-Ming? Why aren’t you in bed?” Chung steps out from behind the door, “I just…can’t sleep in.”
Ming-Ming tries to smiles, “Too excited because of moving?” CHung asks her gently.
“Sure! Chung, you have to go back to bed, you still have work tomorrow!” Ming-Ming shook her head.
“I will if you go back with me.” “Ok, let’s go!” Ming-Ming stood up and turn off the light, she follow Chung back to their bedroom.
America: 2007
“Mommy!” A little boy about 5 or 6, with really big and round eyes running toward Ming-Ming and calls her sweetly.
“Jackie, come here, give mommy a kiss.” Jackie brought his wet mouth to Ming-Ming’s cheek and give it a hiss, “So, do you miss mommy?”
“Yeah, a lot!” Jackie said hugging Ming-Ming's neck.
“Ha, ha, ha, Jackie is always so cute!” Ming-Ming stood up and greets, “Mother, father!” She smiles, “Jackie must really keep you guys busy. I am sorry!”
“Ming-Ming, don’t worry about that, Jackie is a good boy, and he help me out with garden works.” “See mommy? I didn’t bother grandpa and grandma.” They laugh at Jackie’s cute face.
“So you guys are moving to Hong Kong in a month?” “Yes, mother.”
“I see it because of Chung’s work.” Ming-Ming nodded, “Mommy, if we moved to Hong Kong I will see the other grandma right?” “Yes.” “That’s good for Jackie, he is Chinese anyway, and if he stays here he will always speak English!”
They talk more and than Ming-Ming excuse herself and Jackie.
“Mommy, where are we going now?” Jackie asks his mom clutching to her arms, “Jackie, mommy will take you to the market ok? We got some shopping to do.
Daddy must be very hungry when he gets back from work; we better get something good and cook for him. Jackie do you want to join and give mommy and hand?” “Yes, yes, I want to make daddy dinner.”
Jackie’s face is so light up and happy, seeing his cute face make Ming-Ming forget about what happen last night. She carries him into the car as she was about to buckle him up he said: “Jackie is already 5, I can do it myself mommy, don’t worry.” “Good boy, buckle up!” Ming-Ming kiss his cheek, she close the door and went to the driver seat.
Her phone rings while she is starting the engine, Hiu-Chung’s number appear on her screen, “Jackie, daddy calls, wants to answer it for mommy?” Jackie grabbed the phone, “Hello daddy?” “Jackie? Are you with mom?” “Yes, do you miss me daddy?” "Of course I do,daddy" Jackie said into the phone.
"where are you guys heading now Jackie?” “Mommy said we’re going to shopping for food!” “Tell mommy that’s daddy cant go home so early today.” “Mommy daddy said he’s not going home early today.” “Lets me talk to him Jackie.” “Hello, Hiu Chung?” “Ming-Ming.” “Jackie said you’re not going home for dinner?” “Yes, you know co-workers are making a farewell party for me, so I have to come.” “Oh, ok, than when will you be home?” “I guess like really late, so you two go have dinner, don’t wait for me.” “Ok, that’s ok with us, but don’t drink too much honey, you have to drive.” “Ok, bye honey.” He kisses her in the phone, “Ok bye.” Ming-Ming kisses him back. “Ewwwwwwww!” Jackie said.
Ming-Ming smiles, “Naughty boy, daddy not gonna be back until night, so we don’t have to go to the market, where do you want to eat?” Ming-Ming asks her son, “Apple bees, I want the brownie and ice-cream.” “Ok, lets go there get some foods and we’ll go to get suitcases and needed stuff from the mall ok?” “Ok, mommy. Let’s go. Ice-creams, brownies, here I come, ice-creams, and brownies here I come.” Jackie sing on the way they drive, his voice is childish but it gave Ming-Ming happiness. Her son is too cute.
Ming-Ming opens the door into the restaurant, then a waiter came and greets them, “Hi, we have an open table near the window right there, may I take you there Miss?” “Yes, please.” Then they follow the man to the table. They sat, enjoy their lunch and talk with each other.
“Mommy, I want to call daddy.” “Jackie, daddy is at work it’s not so convenient to call him now.” Ming-Ming smiles at her child. “But mommy, Jackie really misses him.” “Jackie, daddy will be home tonight, and we have a lot to do, are you happy because we’re moving to Hong Kong?” “YEA!” Jackie said in a complete cheerful voice. “My silly son, if you’re happy than we better go shopping we don’t have time to call daddy.” They finish their lunch then Ming-Ming drive to the mall.
“Mommy, I want to go to the toy shop. Can I?” “Sure!” Ming-Ming smiles, Jackie wander around looking from shelf to shelf. Ming-Ming smiles at her child, suddenly Ming-Ming felt her heart twisted, it pretty hurt, “Jackie, stay here mommy needs to go to the bathroom ok?” Jackie nodded, Ming-Ming hurried to the bathroom.
She has never have this feeling before, her heart hurt so bad, maybe it was because they’re moving back to the place that she want to forget. Ming-Ming washes her face hoping to feel a little better. She sat down at a chair and rest a little.She falls asleep without notice
She realize that she has been gone for about 40 minutes odd, she push herself up and run back to the toy store. Ming-Ming looks around, but Jackie wasn’t there.
She was scare, her face turn pale, she quickly run to the cashier place, and asks a worker there, “excuse me sir, do you see a child about this tall…” she raise her hand to show, “he is 5 years old, his eyes are big.” “Oh yes, he’s just wander around and he went out of the store already.” “What?? Sorry but do you know where is he heading??” “No madam, sorry.”
Ming-Ming was so scare, Jackie was everything to her, and she ran out of the store starts to search everywhere. Than she drip and fall, tears scroll down on her face, a gentle man helps her up and asks “Miss, is there something wrong??” she cries and says “My…my child…he’s gone…” Ming-Ming cries harder, she was so scare. “Please calm down miss, let’s go to the main office and talk on the speaker, maybe you’re child will heard and come.” Ming-Ming nodded. She decide to call Chung, but she don’t know why she dial…Lam’s number instead….
