Chapter 3

10 Solid Years

“My family consisted of four people. Appa, umma and Shinae noona. We have migrated to Singapore for as long as I could remember. Just like other families, our relationship with one another is very closed. Especially with Shinae noona. The age gap between noona and I are five years. As much as I care and love her, she will return me twice of the passion. We are inseparable or… we were inseparable,” he faced to the left side of the window panel after finishing that last sentence.

“Noona is a very beautiful girl. She has this shinning big eyes along with long eyes lashes, prominent nose and red budding lips,’ thin smile formed as he described her features.

“She must have looked just like you,” Taecyeon interrupted. The exact thoughts he had when he first saw him.

“No,” Heechul answered. “It’s me who looks like her,” making eyes contact with Taecyeon.

“But she is so boyish and such a strong headed person. Only dressed in T-shirts and jeans and accompanied with a straight shoulder length hair just to prove that she’s a girl,” he chuckled. “She can just come up to a man and gives a hard smack on the back or say things without care. For those who do not understand or know her will definitely be offended. She means no harm though. In fact she has lots of good buddies surrounding her.”

Smiles that appeared on his face slowly faded as he continued. “I was 13 when noona left home for the first time. It was for a good cause. She had gotten a place to study in one of Korea’s Prestigious University for two years. We were saddened by her departure but she made a promise that she will never disappoint appa, umma and me. We knew she would not. Almost everyday, she will give us a call or at times wrote home, to update about her life. She never failed to talk about her two bestfriends- Solbi-shi and Soo Young-shi, whom stayed together in the dorm. Though apart, we never had the feelings that she is not around with us.

“Your family must have really been proud of your noona,” an understanding comment came from Junsu.

“Mmm,” Heechul nodded. “However situations begin to change when she entered her second year. Lesser phone calls or letters mailed to us. The reason given, she was busy. Appa and umma was worried for her. Particularly, when nosy people start to make up stories and jumped to conclusions.”

Gritting his teeth, “Those people were slowly poisoning my parents mind by leaving comments like- Oh! Maybe Shinae is not studying as she supposed too and the worse comment that could actually shoot out from their mouths was- Let’s pray so she doesn’t come back with a ‘belly’.”

“Of course she won’t! She already made promise to us,” he clasped his fist tightly.

Junsu and Taecyeon sensed the tension aura building around them.

“Sorry,” Heechul apologized shortly because he himself felt the heat.

After calming himself he continued, “My parents’ worst nightmare came true.”

Taking deep breaths, “Upon completion of her two years studies, noona returned with a baby in her arms. Appa and umma was so mad at her that they disowned her on that day itself giving her no chance to explain anything.”

“10 years has passed since she left us,” tears glands can be seen forming in his eyes.

Closing his eyes slowly, Heechul’s mind was brought back to that unmemorable day.
