Chapter 4

The Day She Left

Noona called home a week ago saying that she will be coming back and she has gotten herself a First Class Degree. Appa and umma was so happy that she didn’t dampen their hopes on her. Of course I was happy too because I can finally get to spend times with her just like those good old days.

I waited anxiously for her in front of our house porch. “Yes! Yes! noona coming home today. There are so many things I want to say and do with her,” my mind filled with all kinds’ thoughts.

Each time when a vehicle passed by, I thought it was her. She said to arrive at 11am but now the time is already 2pm. The sun was blazing at me. “Ok, that’s it! I’m going in! I don’t want to be a ‘BBQ’ human,” I complained.

“Chulie ah!” a chirpy voice shouted. I recognised that voice. It’s none other than noona. Chulie is the nickname that noona’s call me. Gosh! How I missed her calling my name!

“Noona! Noona! Noona!” I was practically jumping as I called out to her.

When I finally composed myself, I saw noona carried something in her arms. A bundle… a baby!!!! My eyes shot wide open. “Baby!!!! This is definitely not happening! Oho! No way!” my inner thoughts have gone wild.

Just then, appa and umma appeared behind me. From the look on their faces, it’s ‘No Good’.

As soon as we entered into the house…

“Shinae!!!!!!” umma was screaming at the top of her lungs. “How could you do this to us? You promised! You promised that you won’t disappoint us. What is that? What is that you holding onto? A baby? Omo! Omo! Why Shinae? Why?” umma was bawling as she bombarded noona with her all the questions.

I wanted to calm umma down but I’m too dumbfounded. The situation was going too fast for me to react. Umma’s screaming and bawling and the baby’s crying. To make it worse, the earlier sunny scorching weather has turned to be dark and cloudy.

“Umma, please listen! Listen to me!” pleaded noona. Noona tried to explain and at the same time swaying her body left and right to comfort the baby to stop crying. Not even once umma tried to listen to her. The baby cried uncontrollably. He or she must have been frightened by umma.

As much I wanted to defend noona, I couldn’t. Then, I was distracted by appa. Appa, who was looking at the commotions quietly, finally moved away from his stagnant position. I believed appa was just like me, dumbfounded. Appa’s heart must have been shattered to see his only princess putting shame to the family name. Walking with a hunchback, he went upstairs. My eyes followed him.

“I allowed you to study in Korea and this is what I get in return. What’s the use if you’ve gotten a degree but you spitted on our face! That means all this while, what the others have said about you are true. You have disgraced us Shinae,” umma sobbed.

“But umma, I…,” noona stopped.

Loud thud sounds were heard. Umma stopped sobbing, baby stopped crying and noona didn’t get to finish her sentence. The house was silenced, except for the sound of heavy rain pouring outside. Heads were turned to the direction where the sounds came from.

It was appa. He had taken noona’s belongings from her room and threw onto the floor. “Take your things and leave,” appa spoke sternly while walking towards umma. Looking at their body language it seemed that both agreed with the decision.

The exchanged eyes contact between appa, umma and noona, scared the guts out of me.

“Appa, umma, please don’t do this!” I finally freaked out. Tears were streaming down to my cheeks, leaving stains onto my T-shirt. “Let’s talk things through. I believe noona…”

“Enough!” shouted noona, cutting my words.

Shortly, she bent down and picked up her belongings one by one. When she was done she said “Thank you. Thank you so much,” a half-heartedly smile escaped from her lips as she looked straight at appa and umma.

Together with her belongings and baby she stepped out from the house.

Chasing after her in the rain, “Noona! Stop! Wait!” I managed to catch up with her before she gotten into a taxi. “Noona, this can be settled. I will help you. I will…” I couldn’t continue. Noona has placed her index finger to my lips and she gave me a hard kiss on my forehead. Then, staring deep into my eyes she said with teary eyes, “I love you and forever will be.”

And the next minute, she’s gone.

I broke down and cried and was totally drenched from the rain.
