I quickly ran up the flock of stairs, never stopping for a breath until I reached the fourth floor.
"Excuse me, where's room 409?" I asked the first nurse I saw in the hallway. She pointed straight down the hallway.
"But you can't go inside sir, sir...please hold on." The nurse hollered as she was running behind me.
"No, you don't understand. I have to see her now!"
Then a doctor walked up and said, "Let him see Miss Li. We've just gotten all the necessary information from her coworker downstairs. She can have visitor now." Turning back to me he said, "But you can only stand outside the glass room. She's in very critical condition and we cannot have infection while she is recovering."
"Is she...is she going to be alright?" I asked.
"She's bandaged up pretty badly, but she's still alive. Although, currently she's still in a coma. We just hope she has the will to fight back."
"But can she hear me? If I talk to her?" I asked desperately.
"In some cases where a patient is in a coma, he or she can still hear, but that I cannot guarantee." Returning back to the nurse, "Anne, show him the microphone location so he can speak thru the glass room."
As I walked into the room, my heart began to shiver. I can see her now. Her entire body was rapped in bandages, the only thing I could see were her eyes, but they were closed. My tears began to fall as I saw her weak, limpy body lying there in the bed. I wished to God it had been me instead who is suffering.
"Qian, I'm so sorry. You have to wake up. I know you can hear me. I know you can feel my presence. I'm so sorry for lying to you about Rain. What I did, I did thinking it was for the best. But I was wrong, the more I tried the more I failed. I should have never lied to you. I never meant to hurt you. You have to believe me. The truth, I don't think I could imagine what my life would be now without you anymore. Between me and Rain, it was the past. That's what I kept on telling her, but she refused to believe me. And so I had to prove to her that I no longer love her -- and that's why I kissed her and that's when you saw us together. But the only thing that was in my mind when I kissed her was YOU. I thought of the special kiss we shared last night and how you felt in my arms when I carried you back into my room. It felt so right to have you next to my side. Rain knows the truth now and she will have to accept it. She cannot lie to herself anymore. I wanted to explain you, but you were too upset to hear me. If I could but undo any pain I've caused you, I would....please wake up. Don’t leave me. Qian, I know you can hear me."
It was then that I saw a tear falling from her eyes. I knew that she had heard me.
"Fung."
Has my mind gone mad? Did I just hear Qian calling my name? But the voice did not come from the glass room – instead it came from behind me. I quickly turned around to find that Qian had been standing there all this time.
"Oh my God! Qian! You are alright?" I glanced from her to the girl in the glass room.
"Yes Fung. I am well." Qian replied with tears in her eyes.
God must have heard my prayer, alas. I went up to Qian and hugged her tightly, never wanting to let her go.
"I thought...I thought...it was you who was in the accident...then who is..."
"It's Rain, Fung. She was the one who got hit by a car."
I glanced back at the glass room then looked down at Qian, "I....I had forgotten that Rain's last name was also Li. When they mentioned Miss Li...The first person that came to my mind was you."
"I know, I know, Fung, " Qian said.
"I'm so sorry Qian. I never meant to lie to you. But you have to believe me..." I held onto her as close as I could.
Qian brought her hands up and wiped my tears away, she smiled and leaned her face against my chest and said "I heard everything that you've said earlier, Fung. I understand now."
"Will you forgive me, Qian?" I asked.
She lifted her face away from my chest and looked into my eyes, "You really meant what you said? When you thought it was me who was lying in there?"
"Yes, of course." I said.
"You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that. Now I know how you feel about me. Now I know you speak of the truth."
"Qian, I'd never lie to you again. I promise. I'd make it up to you...I swear..."
Qian covered her hand over my mouth to stop me from talking. "Shh...Don’t swear by anything. I trust you, Fung."
"Err, excuse me. I'm Dr. Wong. I'm here to checkup on the patient...Miss Rain Li."
We both released each other and stood aside for the doctor to enter the glass room. Ten minutes later, Dr. Wong came back out.
"Is she going to be alright, Doctor?" I asked.
"She's shown improving vital sign through her normal breathing and heart beating rhythm. However, she is still in a coma."
"Do you know how long it will be before she wakes up, Doctor?" Qian asked.
"That, I don't know. Two weeks, one month, or maybe more. It really depends on the patient's will to live again.
Qian and I both looked at each other, I could see the blood draining from her small face.
"I have more patients to check on, if you need anything just have the nurse in front office page me. Good day."
After Dr. Wong left the room, I turned back to Qian, picked up her hands, and said “Rain will be OK again. Just let me take care of everything. Why don't you go back to my apartment and get some rest? You look awfully pale. I will see you when I get home tonight, alright?"
Qian looked up at me with glimmering eyes. She nodded slowly then glanced towards the glass room where Rain has been lying.
I could tell what she was thinking thru the sadness in her eyes. "She will wake up again, Qian." I said, reconfirming her fear. I wiped her tears away from her pale thin face. I gave her another hug before escorting her from the room. But she held onto me tightly and whispered into my ears, "I love you."
"I love you, too." I replied just before she left.
After Qian left, I went back to stand in front of the glass room. I felt guilty standing here looking at Rain lying helplessly in there. Part of me knew I had been selfish, for words could not have described the happiness I felt when I saw Qian in front of my eyes. For a split second, I was glad it had been someone else other than Qian lying in there. And now, if only Rain could wake up again -- somehow, I would repay her. I owe it to her. It is because of me that her life in jeopardy. Please God, let Rain awake again.
