"If we could only see, like we did before. We became imprisoned, can I reopen the door.
You say it doesn't matter, then tell me what does. And why that isn't what you've been thinking of….You say it's never easy, then tell me what was.
Is it never worth the pain….Could you believe it was, when life keeps giving.
That's what life keeps giving to us..." (Excerpt from Us - Celine Dion)
-----------
The sandy beach of Tung Wan is much different than it was 5 months ago. Gone was the quiet winter breeze or the silent peaceful waves. It is summer now and many HK locals usually come to this small beach for a quick weekend get away from HK. I could hear the children's laughter and the radio playing from this far a distance from the main central beach. I gave a sigh as I picked up a stone and threw it into the sea. Then I took out the small glass bottle necklace and gazed at it. This was the 1 week anniversary gift that I had given to Qian, but she had given it back to me on that day. After I visited Rain and left the hospital that day, the first thing I did was call Qian. But I could not reach her. And so I called her house, but her mom had said Qian was filming in remote location; therefore did not bring her cell phone with her. But I wonder if she did that on purpose to avoid my calls. She must have known by now that Rain is awake. But yet, I still have not heard from her. Pride must have kept me from flying out to visit her. It has been more than 2 months, I wonder how much has she changed.
A tiny ring from inside my coat disrupted my thought. My heart jumped, hoping the call was from Qian.
"Hello?"
"Hi son. It's me."
For a second, I was disappointed.
"Oh, hello father. How are you doing?"
"I'm doing better. Are you busy? Can I have a few minutes of conversation with you?" He asked.
"No, I'm not busy. What's the matter, Father?"
"Your mother has been nagging me about your health. Son, we're concern about you."
"I'm fine, Father. Tell Mother not to worry so much. I'm a grown man now. I can take care of myself."
"But Son, you know your Mother. You'll always be a baby to her. In any case, she asked me to call you because we've been seeing many of your pictures in the news. You don't look so good, Son."
"I'm sorry I haven't visited for awhile. I've just been....caught up on some personal issues."
"Those personal issues, are they related to that actress you were dating?"
"Father, I don't want to talk about this with you. I don't want to argue with you. So please just not talk about it."
My Father let out a sigh then continued and said "Son, I think it's about time I offer you an apology. No, before you say anything, just let me finish what I need to say. Son, I'm getting old and as you know my health is not in such great shape. Who knows when I might pass away."
"Father, don't say that!"
"But it's true. In any case, I don't know if it's the old age thing or what. But in recent months since my heart attack, I've had much time to rest and thought about my life and our family. Son, you're a grown boy now. I think you're right that you should be able to do what you want to do."
I smiled quietly to myself, knowing full well what he was about to say, "Father, does this mean...that you're gonna let me decide my own life now -- even the person I love?"
"Son, you're a bright boy. I think you know what I'm hinting without getting your poor old Father to say it directly, right?"
"Hehehe...Father, thank you. I mean, I know I don't need your approval anymore. But it just means a lot more to me when I do get your approval. Thanks again."
"And son, go checkup on your health."
"Yes, I know. I'll make an appointment with the doctor next week."
"Actually, I was referring to your other 'health' medicine."
"Oh….Hehehe.OK, I will. And tell Mother, I will stop by for dinner later on in the week."
"Good, we will see you then. Bring your friend with you too."
“I’ll try, if I can find her first.”
After talking to my Father, I felt a huge relief. It was at that moment that I decided I would to go find Qian. Even if she's gonna be ignoring me, I'll come after her anyways. I'll knock some sense into her even if I have to be forceful about it. She might not like it very much, but I'll convince her that we should be together again.
After coming back to my apartment that day, I received another phone call from Ron.
"Ray, I've got some important news for you."
"Hi Ron, what's up?"
"I'm not sure how to say this to you. Are you seated now?"
"Why? Is there a problem?"
"Have you heard the news?"
"What news? Ron, I haven't been reading the news paper for months now. I told you I stopped doing that already."
"That explains it. Well, I'll just give it straight to you. They say that Bosco and Qian are dating now."
"What?? Are you kidding me?"
"No, man! I swear, I didn't believe it either. So I called Bosco and he confirmed it!"
"That jerk! Going behind my back! I can't believe I'm listening to this."
My blood was boiling at the moment.
"Want a piece of advice from a friend?"
"What?"
"I say, you go out there and get Qian back. And while you're at it, give Bosco a lesson too."
"I'll do more than that. OK I gotta go, Ron."
"Hey, you're flying out there now right? I mean, don't delay this!"
"Yeah, I'm gonna book my flight right now."
"OK, good. Good luck man!"
"Thanks Ron. You're a real buddy!"
I hanged up the phone and thought to myself -- I'll just have to adjust my initial plan a bit. Then an evil grin swept my face as I muttered, "Bosco, two can play at this game."
