Chapter 2

The kitchen clock says a quarter till 7, Fung should be here any minutes. Hopefully he will not mind I've made use of his kitchen. Taking a chopstick out from his cabinet I began to write the words on the cake. Because I sped off so fast at the bakery, I forgot to pickup a tube of sugar gel to write on the cake. Oh well, this will just have to do, I told myself.

“Qian, I’m home!”, Fung hollered out loudly as he entered his apartment. A small furry thing sniffed up his leg. “Hey there Mimi…I wasn’t actually calling you…”, Fung stopped short of his words when he saw Mimi decorated with a pink bow on her head. “Oh my god, what did Qian do to you?” Picking up Mimi into his arms, he walks towards the kitchen upon hearing some clanging of dishes in there.

Fung: “What in the world are you doing?”
The fan in the kitchen was blowing off too loudly I did not hear Fung entering the kitchen standing right behind my back.
“Oh you scared me! Don’t’ sneak up on me like that!”
Fung peeking over my shoulder: “What are you hiding back there? Hm? Let me see?”
It was good thing I have already put the cake in the refrigerator, else it’d be impossible to shield it from his sight since his height was quite hovering, “Fung please go outside you’re not supposed to be in here.”
Fung: “It’s my kitchen”
“So.”
Fung: “OK, Fine. But do you mind telling me what in the world have you done to Mimi?”
Looking at Fung holding Mimi (with a pink bow on her head) was a pretty comical sight, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter.

Fung lets Mimi down on the floor and then walks towards me, “Are you trying to scare me away? You know I hate pink! ” Then he gave a wicked grin, “Unless of course, it’s you who turn pink – then I don’t mind that.”

”Lam Fung! You’re a tease!....aaahhh…stay away from me!” I was too late running away from Fung’s catch as he arms quickly went around my waist.

“You’re no runner Qian and we both know that. So you think you’re smart don’t you? Dressing up my Mimi like some pink-barbie doll! I’m gonna make you pay back!”

Oh no, I already knew his next move but there wasn’t anything I could do to stop him. He released my waist and started tickling me. “Hahahaha…stop stop…..I’m sorry…..Fung …..hahhaa….don’t…..hhihihi…”

Fung: ”Give up yet?”
”Yes, yes you win! Please stop tickling me.”
Fung: ”You promise not to tie up my dog in pink again?”
”Yes, stop…whatever you say….hihihih”
Fung: ”And you promise not to turn my place into a Barbie doll house?”
”I haven’t done that! And besides, I’m not a pink girl.” (sticking out my tongue at him)
Fung: ”Yeah I know, you do that just to spike me.”
”Well can you stop tickling me and let me go now?”
Fung stopped tickling me only to encircle his arms again around my waist, “Yes, but there’s one more thing I want to do.” He bent down to kiss my lips. It was a good thing he was holding me, else my knees would have melt at his touch. Fung is a great kisser, although I’d never tell him that or else his ego would be too boosted.
Fung: “I’ve missed you.”
”Me too”, I replied.
Fung: “So, what have you instore for me today? Why so secretive?”
“Do you know what day it is?”
Fung: “Of course I do. You think I’m that forgetful? It’s our 1 week anniversary.”
“Well I wasn't talking about that.”
Fung: “Oh? What are you referring to then?”

I walked towards the refrigerator and brought out the Birthday cake, “Happy Birthday!”
From Fung’s facial expression, I could tell he was utterly surprised, though I’m not sure why.
“Why the wrinkled brows, Fung? You don’t like it?” Looking down at the awful scribbled words, “I know it doesn’t look to good right now because I messed up on the text…I didn’t get a chance to buy the…”
My words were cut off when Fung stepped forward and took the cake away from my hands, “No, I love it, Qian. Thank You.” He placed the cake on the kitchen cabinet and turned around giving me a big, warm embracing hug.
“Hehehe, what was that for?”
Fung: “For being a wonderful girlfriend.”
“Well of course I remember it’s your Birthday, it’s December 8th. Any girlfriend would have remembered their boyfriend’s Birthday.”
Fung: “I mean, you’re a wonderful girlfriend because you’re so different from other girls. I mean with other girls, they’d make a fuss about 1 week or 1 month or 1 year anniversary, not that I’m saying it’s not important – but with you, here you are worrying about surprising me with a Birthday instead. You probably didn’t even remember our 1 week anniversary did you?”
“Actually, no I didn’t. I wasn’t counting days actually because being with you just seems endless. I’m not picky over those anniversary things.”

Fung pinched my cheeks and gave me kisses on both of them. “OK, I’m starving. When do we get to eat this cake?”

We were interrupted by the sound of the door bell. Someone was at the door.
“I’ll get it.”

“SURPRISE!!!!!”
Fung: “OH wow! Hey!”
Guy 1: “Happy Birthday man! We thought we’d surprise!”
Girl 1: “You don’t think we’d forget our Fung’s Birthday now would we?”
Guy 2: “Yeah man! Friends don’t forget friends, so we brought the party to your house!”
Guy 3: “This is a great place you got here Fung!”

I was overwhelmed at the sight of our visitors when I walked out into the living room, there must have been over 20 of his friends standing there in the living room. Though his apartment was quite big, but it was still not big enough for a party of this size.
“Hello”, I said.
For a crowded as loud as they were, everyone went dead silent when they saw me standing there with an apron on. I was quite amused at the sight of seeing all with their jaws dropped opened.

Fung: “Hi guys, come on in. This is Qian.” Turning towards Guy 1, “Qian, Ron, you remember each other don’t you? ”
Ron sneaked a quick glance from Fung to me before shaking my hands, “Hi Qian, nice to see you again.”
“Hi Ron.”
Fung turning towards Girl 1, “And Qian this is Yeung Yi.”

Yeung Yi stepped forward and gave me a big warm hug then turn to Ray, “Ray, you don’t need to introduce us we know each other.” Turning towards me again, “Hi Qian it’s so nice to see you again.” I was relieved to see Yeung Yi in the group, beside her and Ron I really did not know any of the others. I was happy to see Yeung Yi again, though we have very different personality but she was very nice to me during our filming Twin of Brothers. It was probably because she and Ray were among the few who could speak Mandarin on set at the time too. Ron was a nice guy too, but we didn’t get to hangout much because our language barrier.

Although the party started off slow, but soon everyone got over the initial shock of finding me at Fung’s apartment and began enjoying themselves. They even brought their own karaoke system with them. It was nice to see Fung having many friends who cared about him and remembered his Birthday. I kept myself busy inside the kitchen reheating up some of the food they brought for dinner. There were several other girls at the party, amongst them only Yeung Yi and another girl could speak Mandarin – though I was only talking to Yeung Yi because I really didn’t know the other girl. She was quite pretty though and had long hair and a round lovely face.
Yeung Yi: “Hey you need help with that dish over there?”
I: “No, I got it.”
Yeung Yi: “Oh Ok, I’m not too good with kitchen stuff anyways. Quite useless really. Hehehe”
I: “Hehehe..don’t say that. You’re quite a help already. Just by standing here and keeping me company is helping enough.”
Yeung Yi (giggles): “So…..I’ve been dying to ask you this…How long have you guys gone out? Ray didn’t even mention a word to me or Ron yet! And that’ so not typical of him!”
“Actually, it’s only been a week and Fung just got back from his flight today too.”
Yeung Yi: “Yeah, you’re right. He’s probably been too busy spending time with you now he forgets to call up his old friends now.”
”That’s not true.”
Yeung Yi (giggles): “I’m just kidding!”
We didn’t hear Fung walking up behind us until he asked, “What are you two girls talking and giggling about?”
Yeung Yi: “We’re talking behind your back that’s what!”
Fung: “Yi, don’t be trying to give bad influence to Qian now.”
Yeung Yi: “What? What did I do?”
Fung: “Oh you know what I mean. I just don’t want to see Qian in a mud-mask next time I see her.”
Yeung Yi: “You’re so mean! That’s what girls do! We have to put on mud-mask to look young and pretty. It’s easy for you guys. You guys don’t have to look pretty all the time.”
Fung rolling his eyes as he looks at me, we both gave a small giggle as we both knew perfectly well about Yeung Yi’s habit. During our filming of Twin of Brothers, I remember how Yeung Yi would always try to take care of her skin really well, she had one of those skin sensitive allergy. Any spare time she had, would be spent for putting on mud-mask.
Yeung Yi: “You both are a perfect pair! Making fun of me! Hmph!”
”We’re only teasing you, Yi” Pushing Fung out the kitchen, “Go away Fung, we need our girl time.”
“OK OK. Getting kicked out of my own kitchen, What next??!! Hmph!”

The girl with lovely round face peeked her head into the kitchen as Fung was about to leave, “Anyone seen Ray? Oh there you are! Come on, you’re being requested for a duet with me!”
Fung’ hesitated at her invitation for a few second then gave me a quick glance before following the girl out into the living room.
Not thinking much about anything, I returned to wash the rest of the vegetables.
Yeung Yi: “Um, Qian are you OK?”
”Yes, why do you ask?”
Yeung Yi: “Nothing, just checking to see if you were OK with them singing together.”
Her question caught me by surprise, certainly Yi was not over worrying about Fung and another girl just singing together, is she?
“Yi, what’s the matter?”
Yeung Yi: “Nothing. I didn’t say anything. Um..I’m gonna go outside and pick a song to sing too.”
Before I could respond, Yeung Yi was already gone from the kitchen.
