Voice on Phone: “Qian, sweetie it’s me. Can you hear me now?”
”Oh hi Mom!! Yes, I can hear you now.”
Qian’s Mom: “How are you doing down there?”
”I’m good Mom.”
Qian’s Mom: “You will be home in time for the holiday right?”
”Yes Mom, as soon as I’m done with next week’s interview for the series promotion I’ll fly back home for the holiday.”
Qian’s Mom: “Good good. I’ll make your favorite dishes, sweetie.”
”Aww, thanks Mom. I’ll see you then, alright?”
Qian’s Mom: “You take care of yourself, OK sweetie?”
”Yes Mom, I know. See you in another week. Bye Bye.”
After hanging up the phone, I took a quick glance around the room I was currently in. This must be Fung’s bedroom, I thought. It was a nice and clean room with a built in book case frame cabinet. On it were books from his college days, most of which were Architecture related. There were also several pictures of him with his family. He does sort look after his father a bit, I can see the resemblance there. Next to his family pictures were those of him and his guy friends. Next to the bookcase was a full shelf of DVDs, probably original copies of his films kept for collection. As I was making my way DVD shelf, I accidentally knocked off one of the DVD case. On bending down to pick it up from the floor, I found that a picture had fallen out of the DVD case.
Picking up both DVD case and photo, I immediately recognized the two people in the photo: “It’s her….they were together in Stolen Love?”
A light knock brought my attention to the door.
Yeung Yi: “Qian, are you in there?”
”I’m in here Yi.”
Yeung Yi: “We’re all looking for you. Come on, it’s time to turn off the light and sing happy birthday for Fung. As soon as we find him too.” Yeung Yi was about to grab my hands to leave before she realized what I was still holding in my hands.
Yeung Yi (shockingly): “Where did you find those?”
“I accidentally knock it off the shelf here and the picture slipped out. Is that Rain Li, the same girl that is out there?”
Yeung Yi: “Um….yes. That’s Rain. It was probably taken from that movie they filmed together a few years back.”
”Stolen Love, right?”
Yeung Yi: “Yes.”
I could sense Yi was hiding something from me, but she seems reluctant to say it. And so I initiated the question that was on my mind ever since I saw the picture, “Did they? Did they use to go out?”
Yeung Yi: “Um…No…I mean I don’t know.”
I understood that Yi was uncomfortable about revealing things about her friend, “It’s OK, Yi. You don’t have to answer me. I didn’t mean to put you in an awkward situation.” After putting the picture back inside the DVD case and onto the shelf, I said “Come on, let’s go sing Happy Birthday for Fung. Where did you say he was?”
Yeung Yi: “I don’t know. I was looking for you and him too. He seemed to disappear after he sang the duet with….”
“With Rain?”
Yeung Yi: “Rain didn’t feel too well after eating and then singing. I think she left already though.”
”Oh? Well come on, let’s us go find Fung before the party dies out.”
As soon as we walked into the living room, we saw Ron and Fung having just re-entered the apartment.
Ron: “Found our Birthday boy outside!” Turning to Fung, “What were you doing outside? Must be back to old habit, Smoking again! Man I thought you gave that up already.” Fung didn’t reply and only glanced around the room to see me standing there next to hallway.
What was he doing outside? I thought to myself. He could see my eyes questioning his whereabouts and started to walk towards me, when the entire room went dark.
GROUP SINGING :
“Happy Birthday day to you”
“Happy Birthday day to you”
“Happy Birthday day to Ray”
“Happy Birthday day to you”
GROUP YELLING : “Now make a wish and blow out your candles!”
Fung made his silent wish and blew out the candles.
An hour later after everyone had finished eating the cake, they all decided it was getting pretty late and bid us goodnight.
Yeung Yi: "Call me if you want to go shopping in Hong Kong before you leave back for China, Qian."
"Thank You, I'm not sure if I'll have time to shop but I'll try."
Silently, Fung and I cleaned up the apartment. Fung took mopped the floors and took out the garbage while I cleaned the dishes in the kitchen.
I was too occupied in my own thought -- wondering how I would bring up the question about Rain and him, to have noticed that Fung had been standing there in the kitchen.
Fung: "You've been awfully quiet since the party, Qian. Is everything OK?"
"Oh, you're done...Yes, I'm fine."
Fung: "Are you sure? Did...did Tav say something to you?"
"No. What makes you think that?"
Fung: "As I remember, I was the one asking the question first."
"No. Yi didn't say anything, why is there something I should know?"
For some reason I was frustrated that he sounded suspicious with me, when it should have been the other way around. I should be the one asking my suspicion.
Fung: "Qian, if you have something you want to ask me. Just say ask. I don't like it when you drawback from us and become all quiet about it."
He's right, I know. I should be straightforward with him and ask him about her. Even if it's true, it's already the past and he's with me now. I should have nothing to worry about.
"Fung, I'm sorry. I don't know what's gotten into me. It's just that I have something to ask you but I'm having a hard time putting it into words. It's about Rain."
Fung: "What about her?"
"Did she use to be your girlfriend?"
Fung calmly replied: "No. Did Tav tell you she was?"
"Oh No! Yi didn't tell me anything. It's just that I accidentally found yours and Rain picture together in your room. And so that's why I thought..I thought..."
Fung: "You were in my room?"
"I was in there because I had to talk on the phone with my mom and the music was too loud out here..."
Fung reached out and held my hands and said: "It's OK, Qian. Rain and I used to be friends, but she was never my girlfriend."
"And the picture?"
Fung: "The picture was a memory keepsake from that movie we filmed together. It was my first movie in my career and I wanted a keepsake from it. Someone on the set took it for us. So does that answer all the curiosity question in that ponderous mind of yours?"
"Hehehe...Yes."
Fung pinched my nose and then said: "You think too much my little chicken...Now let's eat that cake you bought for me."
"You're not full yet from that other cake?"
Fung: "No of course not. Even if I'm full, I HAVE to eat this cake because it's from you."
"Hehehe.....well I can help you eat it...hehehe"
Fung sarcastically raises one eyebrow as he turned to look at me, "I'm sure you can...I pity the fool who marries you. He'll have to be rich enough in order to afford feeding that sweet, delicious mouth of yours."
"You're rich, aren't you?"
Fung (smiles): "Li Qian, are you ..........asking me to marry you?"
"I am not! And besides it's traditional that only men do the proposal not us ladies."
Fung scratching his head, "Hm, as I recall....someone told me that she loved me first."
"Only AFTER someone pushed me on the sand and kissed me first!" (sticking my tongue out at him)
Fung gave an evil grin first before he reached for the refrigerator door and flung a huge piece of cake in my face!
"Ouch! You!! You!! Come back here! I didn't buy that cake so you can make my face eat it!"
Fung laughing hysterically, "Now you look like Tav when she puts on her mud-mask! Hahahahaha"
*WHAM!!!!*
I threw an entire cake into his face. "Now we both look like Yi with a mud-mask!"
It was passed midnight by the time I finished my shower and finally washed all the cake off successfully.
{Knock Knock}
Fung hollered outside the door: "Qian, here's a T-shirt I think will fit you."
Opening the door slightly I quickly grabbed Fung's T-shirt and put it on. It was a good thing Fung's T-shirt was oversized for me, it'd do quite nice for a sleeping garment. I didn't intend to stay overnight at Fung's place but seeing that it was too late for him to be driving me back to the hotel and since Fung had offered me his bed for my stay here and he'd sleep in the living room couch, I agreed to the idea.
"OK, all yours" , said I as I left the bathroom with a great yawn.
Fung pointing to his bedroom: "The bed is all yours, princess." Then he handed me a small gift box and said "And this is for you."
"What's this?", said I.
Fung replied: "It's for you. Celebrate one week anniversary. I told you I remembered."
"Aww, thank you. You didn't have to, Fung."
Fung: "Go ahead and open it."
"No, not now I'll wait and open it when I go back to China."
Fung puzzled at my answer: "Why? Why wait until then?"
"Just because...now you go take a shower. I think I'm gonna hit the bed now. So sleepy."
Fung: "But do I still get a good nite kiss though?"
"Ewww no! You're still all dirty with cake on your face!! Good nite Fung....."
Fung obediently replied: "Yes mame, good nite." and went into the bathroom mumbling to himself "It's so unfair!"
I put the gift box next to Fung's bed tableside and was about to go to sleep, when unintentionally my eyes drifted to the DVD shelf again. And so I went and retrieved the DVD case, but to my surprise the picture was not there anymore.
