Eversince the night after Fung’s birthday when I found the picture was missing, I wanted to ask him what happened to it but I decided not to ask him. Whatever there might have been between Rain and Fung – it’s the past now. I believe him when he said she was never his girlfriend and I also believe that Fung would never hurt me. In a way, I am glad he did discard the picture – it meant that we are now at fresh start without any past. Touching the necklace charm Fung had given me for our one week anniversary, I smiled to myself knowing the intention of his gift. Fung had given me a necklace with a small glass bottle filled with sands from Tung Wan Beach as a remembrance of our first kiss together.
{Hunan, 2 weeks later}
“Sweetie, it’s time for breakfast. Come out to eat”
Hollering out from my bedroom, “I’m coming Mom!”
Switching back to my cell phone, “Fung, I have to go eat breakfast now. I’ll talk to you later. Bye Bye.”
“Who is that you are speaking to on the phone?”, asked my Mom. “You’ve been jumping out of your seat every single time that cell phone of yours rings.”
“Uh, important phone calls I can’t miss, Mom.”
“Ever since you’ve been back from Hong Kong you’ve been talking on the phone every day, is everything OK sweetie?”
”Yes, Mom. Everything is fine. One of the directors from TVB has offered me another role and we’ve just been discussing some matters that’s all.”
”Is that so?”, replied my Mom. She sounded as if she didn’t believe me. Even though I did tell her the truth, I was still unable to look into her eyes. Well OK, I told her half of the truth. Director Leung did call me for a new role earlier in the morning, but most of the other calls were from Fung. I really didn’t know just how to tell my Mom about me dating Fung yet because -- well I’ve never officially dated any guys up until now.
{House Phone : Ring Ring}
“I’ll get it Mom!”
“No, you sit down and eat your breakfast. I’ll get the phone.” {picks up phone} “Hello? Oh Good Morning Mrs. Kwok. Who? No, I don’t know about it. I do not buy those magazine. No, she didn’t tell me.”
I was eating my breakfast when I noticed that my mom was looking at my direction as she was speaking on the phone.
“What is the name of it again? OK. Thank you for calling. Yes, yes I appreciate your calling. Good day Mrs. Kwok.”
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
She remained silent for several minutes before looking up at me and replied: “That was Mrs. Kwok. She said she was grocery shopping this morning and spotted several of your pictures and a guy kissing and leaving his apartment in a gossip column magazine.”
“What!”, I exclaimed. “How could they have known?”
“Qian, sit back down. Where do you think you’re going?”
“Mom, I have to see those pictures and magazines.”
“Sit back down young lady!”
“But Mom…”
”Don’t but me. So it is true then? Were you living with that actor down in Hong Kong?”
”Mom, it’s not like it seems. I mean…gosh I don’t know where to begin explaining Mom.”
“I have all day Qian, start explaining.”
And so I told my mom everything – beginning with my first time working together with Fung.
“And Mom, we both just thought that this was our own personal life – there’s no need to go public about it. We had no idea there were paparazzi following us and taking out photos to post on those magazines.”
”Honey, you can’t expect people not to know about it. Qian, sometime I think you forget that working in a field of Entertainment comes with a trade-off – your personal life. Your father and I had cautioned you before when you choose this career.”
”I know Mom. I…I just never thought…it’d be this way.”
“This Lam Fung, are you sure he loves you too?”
“Yes.”
”Then there’s nothing you need to worry about. If it’s the truth, just be truthful about it to the media. Once you confront to them with the fact, they have no further gossips to speculate upon.”
“I’m just not sure how…how Fung feels about this.”
”Honey, if he loves you enough, he would admit the truth and confront the problem like a man.”
“Thanks Mom…and Mom, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about him earlier.”
”Sweetie, I’m your Mom. I know you. You’ve never been open about your feelings when it comes to guys. But sweetie, you're 22 now, you need to know that you can come and discuss with me about anything, OK?”
“Yes Mom, thank you for understanding.”
I tried to call Fung that same night to talk about the news, but I could not reach him. Many questions and fear went through my mind the entire day. I wasn’t sure exactly what is what anymore. I felt horrible about not telling my Mom about my relationship with Fung, but after I was able to spill out my feelings and talked to her about it – I definitely felt as though one heavy stone has been lifted from my shoulders. But now there’s several more burden I’d have to face: the media and Fung. Like Fung, I’ve never been comfortable enough to discuss my private life, much less to share love life with the media. And then there’s Fung – I am not exactly sure how Fung feels about all this breaking news and not being able to reach him the entire night just further increased my fear and frustration.
Several days passed and yet I still have not heard from Fung.
On the morning of New Year’s Eve, I finally received a reply back from him, not a call, but just a short text message. “Sorry Qian, I’ve been busy. Take care. Fung” My heart sank at the sight of the message for my worst fear might becoming true.
