Chapter 6

Last night, after watching the fireworks together we did not discuss any further about the subject for it was getting late and my Mom had come home. So we said our goodnight and Fung went to back to his hotel. I couldn’t sleep all night, still thinking about all that Fung had said. Knowing Fung, I know his family is very important to him and I really did not want to be the cause of their argument. And although Fung seemed like he was back to normal when we said goodnight, I could still feel some sadness when I looked into his eyes. I just wasn’t sure anymore what should be done; the only thing I know is I didn’t want to be another burden for Fung, especially during this time.

The next morning, I picked up Fung from the hotel and drove him to the airport because he had to fly back to finish his filming.

“A penny for you thought, Qian” said Fung as he was sitting in the car on our way to the airport.
“Fung...maybe we should….. “
“I already know what you’re gonna say….don’t even suggest it Qian…?”
“Well it can be a temporary thing…at least for the time being or until your father’s health is fully recover.”
Fung looks at me with half-disbelief “Don’t be ridiculous Qian. I don’t think stop seeing each other will resolve the problem. And besides my father already knows about it. In time, hopefully he’ll learn to accept you as he did with my career choice…”
“I just don’t want to be the cause of…”
Fung patted my hand and said “Qian, this is the reason why I didn’t want to tell you in the first place. I knew you’d say that.”
(Sigh) ”I’m sorry Fung”
“You’re forgiven” Fung replied jokingly and gave me a big understanding smile. “Qian, sometime I wonder what goes on in that little mind of yours” Fung flickered his fingers through my hair.
“Hehehe…too many things”, said I.
“But seriously Qian. Don’t ever suggest that again.”

“I won’t.” I replied. “OK, we’re here. What airline are you departing from so I can drop you off?”
Fung pointed to the far side of the airport, “No, not here. Go to a parking garage.”
”Parking garage, what for?” I asked puzzlingly.
“Well, aren’t you coming with me to see me off?” Fung asked.

Seeing my confused facial expression, Fung said, “You drove me here 2 hours early. I don’t want to sit there and wait by myself. Come inside with me.”
“But aren’t there gonna be…aren’t you afraid…”
“Of the media? I don’t t think anyone knows I’m here. But in any case, we’d have to face them someday.”

And so hand-in-hand we walked together to the airport entrance. I smiled to myself thinking how true the saying of “after a heavy storm, the sun will shine again.”

Over the next couple of weeks, Fung and I were both busily occupied with our work load and thus only managed to call each other a few time. And even though we did not get to talk or see each other everyday as often as we’d like to, I was very content with our relationship. At least now we can be open about our relationship to everyone. Fung was filming an MTV video for his series promotion and I was busy reading thru the scripts of my new role. I was to make several flights down to HK again for a test screen with my new co-stars after January. On top of all that, our series that we filmed last year was to be aired in a few days. Hopefully the audience will receive it well. The media continued to pry into our private lifestyle of course and was still interested in the progress of our relationship. I am still trying to get use to having this much attention. Luckily I have been more fortunate than Fung as I able to get more privacy living up here. Sometime we’d make joke and poke fun at our pictures on the news. Some the photos posted were hideous and hilarious – as it was obvious they were edited. We haven’t seen each other face-to-face for more than a month but still some news columns claim to have spotted us together. As for Fung’s dad, Fung said he was recovering gradually from his heart attack.

In February, I flew down to HK for several days to do my first test screen. I had read through the scripts and it was a very different kind of series than all my previous roles. It’d be a comedy in Ching Dynasty and the male lead co-star would be Bosco Wong. We’ve met before at Fung’s birthday last year, so it did not take long before we were very comfortable acting our roles during the test screen. Since I went straight from the airport to the meeting, I didn’t have time to call Fung telling him my arrival, which was a week earlier than I had told him I’d be in HK since the director had a change of plan. It was 9pm before we finally finished the test screen and picked out our custom designs. And since I could not reach him throughout the entire day and I decided to catch a taxi to go back to the hotel. At the same time, Bosco was driving out from the parking lot and saw me.

“Hey, are you waiting for Fung to pick you up?”
“Hi Bosco, actually no. I have not been able to reach him all day. I was about to call for a taxi.”
“Which hotel are you staying? I could give you a ride.”
“Are you sure? I’m staying at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Is that on your way?”
“Not a problem. It’s only 10 minutes away. Hop in….you’ll have to excuse the mess in my car.”
“Hehehe…thank you.”
“Hope you won’t mind me keeping the roof off. I love driving and feeling the cool air at night.”
”No, I don’t’ mind.”

Bosco: “How’s Fung now days? I haven’t seen him since his birthday party.”
“Busy filming his MTV I think. I haven’t seen him since New Year day too.”
“Oh yeah, I’ve heard about his MTV bit from Ron. Damn lucky guy.”

In the short period of time that I have gotten to know Bosco, I found him to be a very direct and honest person. Although sometime his remarks and comments might seem crude and blunt, but I know he means what he says and speaks his mind freely.

We were almost out of the parking lot when Bosco said to me pointing to the far end of the parking lot, “Hey isn’t that Fung’s car over there?”
I looked towards his pointing finger and saw the white Benz Mercedes.
“I think so? I’m not sure it’s quite dark over there.” I replied. I guess Fung must be in the next studio nearby. Our attention was then turned to the double backstage door as it swung open making a loud sound.
We could hear the sound of a man and woman talking. I couldn’t make out what their conversation was about because it was in Cantonese, but I recognized the man’s voice.

“That sounds a lot like…” said Bosco.
“Like Fung….Bosco, can you drive up a little bit closer.”

Bosco hesitated for a minute before he drove to the end of the parking lot where the couple was standing.
“Err….maybe it’s not a good idea…they don’t seem like they want company at this moment.”

Since the guy was standing facing directly at our car, as we got closer I immediately recognized his face, “It is Fung!” I still didn’t know who the girl was because she had her back towards us. At first they didn’t seem to have noticed us until our car’s headlights were shinning in their view.

Fung put his hands over his eyes slightly trying to make a view of his intruder and asked : “Who is it?”

I said to Bosco, “Bosco, turn off your light. It’s shining into his eyes.”

Bosco quickly turned off his head light and shut his engine.

“Qian? Is that you?” Fung asked. At this time the girl who had been standing there also turned around and looked at us. It was Rain and she has been crying.
She wiped her tears away as soon as she saw us and quickly walked back inside the backstage door without another word.

Fung walks up to the car and said “Qian, what are you doing here?” Looking towards Bosco he asked “And what are YOU…. doing here?”

“I was about to ask you the same, man.” Replied Bosco.
Ignoring Bosco’s question, Fung turned back to me and said “Qian, I thought you weren’t supposed to be here until next week?”

I looked straight into Fung’s eyes and replied bluntly, “There was a change of plan”. I really didn’t feel like answering any of his questions right now and I didn’t want to ask him any questions either since Bosco was there. Bosco sensing our tension finally suggested that Fung should take me back to the hotel since he’s there now. I felt bad that Bosco was caught in this situation and since I didn’t want to cause him anymore awkwardness, I opened the door and stepped out of Bosco’s car.

“Thanks for the ride anyway Bosco.” I said and walked towards Fung’s car, passing him without a second glance.
“Err…no problem.”, replied Bosco.
“Yeah thanks Bosco for taking care of my girlfriend.” Fung retorted.
“Anytime man.”

Fung walks to his car and opened the door for me to enter first before going back to his side and enter the driver seat.
“Qian, I didn’t know you’d be in HK this early. You didn’t tell me.”
“What were you and Rain talking about and why was she crying?” I asked.
“She…she just has some personal issues she needs to get over with. I was just trying to be a friend. Let’s not talk about her. Anyways, you didn’t answer my question. How come you didn’t tell me you’d be here early?”

It’s obvious that Fung didn’t want to talk about Rain and there’s no use forcing him to. But he was also right, if it’s Rain’s personal issues then I have no rights to ask about it.

“I tried calling you but couldn’t get through.”
“I didn’t get any miss calls or message from you.”
“Well, I did send them.”

Fung quickly took out his cell phone and went thru his recent call & inbox list. I glanced over and saw that it was empty. Fung wasn’t lying. How could that be? I did send him 3 messages earlier in the week and made several calls today.

“It’s empty”, I said. “Maybe I forgot to press send on those messages?”

But Fung didn’t hear what I was saying as he seemed to be thinking something else, “Fung?”
Fung blinked for several seconds before noticing that I was still talking to him. Then he smiled and said, “Well in any case you’re here now -- so let’s forget about it. So what hotel are you staying in?”

“The Hyatt Regency.”

“By the way, what was Bosco doing driving you? I didn’t know you know him?”
”We’re working together in the new series that I’m here for.”
“Oh.”
