Chapter 3

The Call

“Where is it?, Where is it?” … Maki’s had been panicking for the last 2 minutes as she could not find the source of the ringing mobile phone. She knew it was hers but where? As it keeps on ringing, her heart beats faster. She rummages through the mess in her bedroom.

“Ah… thank you for not hanging up on me” She immediately answered before Tomo could speak.

“Oi, Is your room really that disorganized? Tomo was amused to hear Maki grasping her breath. She was obviously a bit distraught that she might miss his call. Good heavens, he missed her so much!

“I know, Gomen. Hey what were you doing? I was expecting your call three days ago” Maki was so glad to hear his voice that she almost forgot he hadn’t called her.

Now it was Tomo’s turn to apologize. “Honto ni gomen ne, I just got caught up with something I did not really expect. You will never guess what it is and I won’t tell you the until I’ll get back.” Tomo teased

“Nani, nani? Pleasssseee.

Nahh, it’s more of a surprise.

“Honto? Okay, just be sure that I’ll be surprised.” Tomo was glad that she dropped the matter easily. He really wanted to surprise her.

“Oh you will, I would not have believe it myself. So how are you doing? I miss you.” He lowered his voice, it was as if he’s afraid that someone in the background might hear and tease him.

Then out of nowhere someone jumped out from Tomo’s back and shouted
“daisuke, daisuke, kiss, kiss” Tomo shove that someone’s face before he could say anything embarrassing. But before that person walked away with a smile on his face, he added “Yo Maki chan…” Tomo pushed him out of the door and slammed it shut.

“Who was that? Maki asked, “He sounds like Japanese… his voice reminds me of … of… of you actually, only he is not you. I know you too well”
“Is that your way of telling me you missed me too?” Before Maki could respond Tomo added “Yeah, he is Japanese and he is a ventriloquist” Tomo was trying to redirect their conversation to other things. “Oi, you have never answered my questions.”
“H-o-w a-r-e y-o-u d-o-i-n-g?” Tomo repeated
Maki chose to sit on the floor at the bottom of her bed. “Oh well, nothing much” Then she paused and said “I met a new friend.”

“And?” Tomo could sense that she was stalling him

“He was nice and charming. His father just died and he took over their wine business. In fact I met him when I happened to drop by his wine shop” Maki could somehow imagine Tomo’s face fumed with jealousy.

“What were you doing in a wine shop? Did you drink some of his wine? Did he ask you out? How can you do this to me? Ahhh…aaahh Maki!” Tomo was pacing back and forth now. He didn’t care showing his rage.

Maki was trying to hide her amusement. “Tomo chan relax, he’s already engaged. Besides, that was just your punishment for not calling me on time.” Maki made her voice sound hurt.

“Stop seeing him” Tomo commanded

“What?”

“I said stop seeing this guy!”

“You can’t tell me who I should and shouldn’t meet” Maki was surprised by his attitude. He had never been so authoritative with her.

“If you don’t I’ll go after him” Tomo threatened

“What? Will you stop acting like a child! Look, he’s just a friend okay? I don’t love him” She was about to add “It’s you that I love” but she didn’t dare say it at this point.

“Maki” Tomo’s voice called out but Maki hung up the phone before she could hear what she didn’t want to hear.

Tomo couldn’t believe that she hung up on him. He couldn’t believe that for just a week Maki met Kamenashi Kazuya. Oh yes, he knew him. The world is just not big enough for both of them to co-exist. What is he up to now? Tomo wondered.

That someone from earlier was actually just happened to be standing in front on the other side of the door and heard everything. He just sighed and went downstairs to grab something to eat.
