Chapter 1

A New Beginning

One Year Ago....
The cloudless sky, the blistering sunshine, and the tropical wind all marked a beautiful day for the passengers of the plane to depart from America to Taiwan.
“Excuse me,” a youthful young lady addressed the uniformed flight attendant.
“Yes,” she answered.
“Can you please help me find my seat?”
“Sure,”
The girl in her early twenties handed over her airplane ticket.
“Follow me,” the flight attendant kindly said, “Here is where you will be seating”
She pointed towards the last seat of left row right next to the window.
“Thank you,”
The girl, who was momentarily lost on the plane, settled her belongings and took out a large white laptop.

-

“Are you playing games?” a little boy sitting next to her asked.
“Well-” she said.
“We're sorry for interrupting,” his mother quickly interrupted.
“No, it's fine. I'm Mei, by the way,”
“Nice to meet you, I'm Ella and this is my son Bao.”
“So...Bao...to answer you previous question, I wasn't playing games on my laptop. I was just updating my diary. ” Mei said.
“Shouldn't a diary be inside a journal or something?” Bao said.
“I like typing on my laptop a lot more. I can update faster too. I also add pictures directly to help me remember each and everyday more vividly in the future.”
“Ma, can I start writing my own diary too?” Bao said, “I want to be ready when I meet daddy.”
Ella sighed. She quickly smiled.
“I'll buy you your own journal when we get there then,” Ella said.
“Sis Mei, can you tell me about Taiwan?”
“I would love to, but I haven't been there in ten years.”
“Wow, really?” Bao said, “My mother hasn't returned there in ten years either. I would say that you two are related but you're really too pretty to be compared with my mother.”
Ella rolled her eyes towards the other way, “My son's already betraying me for a girl.”
“You are wrong, I can't be compared to you two at all, you're just too cute.”
After the long hours, the large plane finally arrived in Taiwan.

-

“It was nice meeting you two” Mei said, “I wish you luck on meeting your dad,”
“I will” Bao said, “I won't forget to write my diary either.”
“Do you two mind taking a picture with me?” Mei asked.
“Sure, we would love to.” Ella replied.
Ella, Bao, and Mei all posed together for a quick snapshot.
“Are we going to see each other again?” Bao asked.
“Hopefully,” Mei said.
“What's your number?” he said.
“Look at him, he's only 10 and yet he's trying to get a girl's number.” Ella chuckled.
“Aw, unfortunately I don't carry a cell phone, I prefer talking to people directly.”
Bao frowned, “You have laptop and a camera, but no phone?”
“How about this, I'll give you my address and when you two are free, just visit me?”
“You don't have to,” Ella insisted.
“It's a must,” Mei said. “Just ask for Mei Li, I'm sure people will let you in.”
“Thank you sis Mei,” Bao said.
“I have to go now.”
Ella and her son parted their ways with Mei.

-

Mei entered the large building by the name of “Wu Tien Advertising Co. Headquarters”.
She stopped by the information table to ask for her cousin.
“What floor is Hebe Tien in right now?” Mei said.
“Do you have an appointment?” the female clerk responded.
“I'm Hebe's cousin.”
“You can wait over there,” she said, pointing to the sitting area.
Mei waited for over an hour and realized that she was going to be sitting there all day.
She threw herself up out of the chair and stormed towards the elevator.

-

“Hey Calvin,” the security guards greeted the guy who pushed a large grey cart with at least 100 cups of coffee.
“Hey,” Calvin said.
“Need help getting into the elevator?”
“No thank you, I--”
Another security guard suddenly knocked the cart of the coffee over to its side.
“Stop right there,” said the security guard.
He grabbed Mei by the arm.
“You must be another paparazzi trying to sneak inside.”
He threw her towards the spilled coffee on the floor.
Mei noticed all the paper cups were from the Hope Coffeehouse.
“What do you think you're doing?” Calvin said, “You can't treat people that way,”
Calvin leaned towards the floor and offered his hand.
“Are you all right?” he said.
“I'm sorry,” she said, grabbing hold of his hand. “It's my fault for spilling all your coffee.”
“It's not your all your fault,” he said and smiled.
“Ms. Tien,” everyone said.
“What's a matter,” Hebe asked.
“Hebe,” Mei called out.
“This girl is a paparazzi.” the security guard said.
“This girl, is my cousin,” she said. “Everybody just mind their own business and get back to work.”
Hebe walked over to Mei.
“Thanks for helping her out,” Hebe said.
“You...you're welcome” Calvin replied as his face turned red.
Mei bowed her head towards Calvin.
“Just put the coffee on my tab,” she said, “Let's go home, your mother has been missing you like crazy.”

-

Mei and Hebe got inside a black Mercedes driven by a chauffeur.
“The guy back there,” Mei said.
“You mean the coffee delivery guy?” Hebe replied.
“His name is Calvin right?” Mei said. “I think he likes you.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes it does. Wouldn't you rather go and find some guy you might like instead of marrying Chun, the guy who means absolutely nothing to you?”
