Chapter 2

A Family Reunion

Ella and Bao found their way home. It was an old-fashioned apartment complex. The only way to navigate throughout the building was to use the dated staircase.
“Are you ready?” Ella asked her son.
“I don't know...you seem like the one who isn't sure,” Bao said.
“Do you remember what I told you earlier?”
“If a man opens the door, I call him uncle, if a woman opens the door, I call her grandma,”
“Good,”
Ella anxiously knocked on the blue wooden door. An older women opened the door, her long white hair was tied up in a bun. She was a typical traditional Asian woman.
“Chia-Hwa?” the old woman said.
“Grandma,” Bao said.
“Ma, I've finally returned home.” Ella said as she took the opportunity to hug her precious mother.
“This is my grandchild?” she said.

-

They headed inside the small apartment consisted of two bedrooms. There was a small wooden dining table on the left which could hold up to four people at a time. Towards the right was the entrance to the small kitchen that barely had any updated appliances. Deeper inside the house was the living room: there was large brown fabricated sofa, a small coffee table, and an antique television.
“Ma, I'm sorry for not taking care of you all these years.” Ella admitted.
“It's all right my child, as long as you have returned.”
“Grandma, why do you call her Chia-Hwa?” Bao said.
“Chia-Hwa is her real name.” she replied.
“Grandma, did you really give birth to my mother?” he continued, “Are you sure you didn't adopt her?”
“Bao...” Ella grunted.
“What?” he said, “Even though her hair is gray, she still looks so young.”
“I am?” grandma replied.
Bao nodded. “If only your daughter gained all your beautiful essence, I would have gotten a step-father already.”
“If only your uncle has your ways with words, I would have gotten a daughter-in-law to talk to.” grandma said.
“When is Calvin returning?” Ella said.
Grandma noted, “Your brother should be returning from work to cook dinner soon.”

-

“Ma, I'm home,” Calvin said as he walked towards the living room and noticed Ella and Bao.
“Calvin,” Ella said.
“Sis,” he replied. “You've finally returned...after all these years...you've finally decided to take full responsibility of a daughter.”
He walked into the small kitchen before Ella had a chance to properly reunite with her brother. Ella followed him into the kitchen.
“I know you're mad at me for not caring for mother all these years.” Ella said.
Calvin remained silent.
“I still thank you for sending me money all these years.” Ella said, “I'm sorry.”
“Apology accepted, big sis.” he said.
“Phew, that was easy.”
“From now on, you do the cooking,” he said as he handed her the apron and the uncooked food.
Calvin excited the kitchen and greeted Bao.
“You expect her to cook the food?” Bao said, “My mother can cook?”
Calvin nodded.
“Has she been stuffing you with hamburgers?” Calvin said.
“You can tell by looking at her figure.” Bao replied.
“What?...there's absolutely nothing to look at.”
They both laughed.
Ella peaked out from the kitchen with her face all scrunched up.
“Would you like to go to visit my workplace?” Calvin said.
“Ma---” Bao said.
“Yes you may,” Ella replied, “Bao, you must listen to your uncle.”

-

Calvin and Bao walked to the Coffeehouse.
“So where exactly is your father?” Calvin asked.
“My mother hasn't told you?” Bao said.
“She rarely calls home.”
“I don't know. I don't know anything about my dad. I don't know if he's fat and ugly or even knows that I exist. All I know is that his name is Chun.”
“Don't worry, I'll help you find him,”
“Thank you, uncle Calvin”
“Don't mention it, we will be roommates after all.”
“We will?”
“There are only two rooms at home. I suppose, us men will share a room together.”
“Can I ask you for a little favor?”
“What is it?
“Can you buy me a journal?”
“A journal? What for?”
“To update the process of my young life,”
“Wow, you are a very interesting nephew of mine.”
“I want to keep a journal so that when I visit my friend, she'll like me even more.”
“I'm sure your little friend will congratulate you.”
“My little friend is a college student with healthy long black hair, a toned body, the height of a model, big round eyes, a small cute little nose, and a rosy set of kissable lips.”
“I think you're a little too young to know whether someone's lips are kissable.”
“I think you're just jealous.”

-

Calvin and Bao arrived at the Hope Coffeehouse within the next 10 minutes.
“Aaron, did any of them stop by?” Calvin asked.
“Jiro stopped by when he finally woke up and three. Selina showed up at around five o'clock afterwards to pick up some coffee.” The handsome waiter replied.
Calvin mumbled. “These owners, when will they ever stop trying to avoid each other?”
“Wow uncle Calvin, your friends are really weird. One person wakes up at three and one person drinks coffee in the evening.” Bao said.
“I'm going to head inside the kitchen, can you keep an eye on him for a couple of minutes?” Calvin asked.
He headed inside the kitchen.
“I suppose the people in this coffeehouse are all weird.” Aaron said.
“You do realize that you're calling yourself weird too right?” he asked.
“You're a fascinating little fellow, what's your name?”
“My name is Bao Chen,”
“I'm Aaron Yan.”
“You seem pretty normal to me,” Bao commented.
“Like I said, everyone in this coffeehouse is weird...including you. ”
