Chapter 12

A Burden Sight

=========================================

Our final match was soon to be started. I was nervous and at the same time I was excited. I saw Maki who happily prepared for our needs during our training. She was extremely enjoyed every moment she had. We were told that our next opponent would be really tough as they got a good pitcher. But I was well prepared for it!
Recently, Maki had been slowly spirited. She looked tired and sighed a lot. I didn’t know why but she tried her best to fulfill her duty. At the moment, she looked at me and gave me a gloomy smile and then she turned away. I wondered what happened to her but well I hope she was doing fine…

As I looked at Maki, suddenly my phone rang. I stood up and reached my phone. It was Masami. I smiled and walked away from the room.

"Masami…."

"Tomo!" Masami laughed. "How's your day?"

"Well, I'm fine…" I replied simply.

She chuckled. "Tomo, are you free today?" asked Masami suddenly.

"Hmm…. Well, yeah… why?"

"So will you go out with me today?"

"Eh??" I stunned. "What's wrong? Are you in trouble or something?" I asked.

"No! You're asking too much questions! By the way, meet me at the entrance gate at 7, okay? I'll see you soon and don’t be late! Jaa ne!" Immediately she hanged up the phone. I was stunned. She had always been like that. She didn’t changed a bit, always made her own decision. I sighed.

"Why is she always like this?" Then, I entered the room and turned to Toma. He looked frustrated. "What's wrong?" I asked.

"I hate that girl!!"

I looked at him confusingly. "Who?" I asked him again.

He took a deep breath and pointed out at Maki and Aya. "That girl! The one who is with Maki… Always pestering me and bullying me. Tomo, please help me…. tell them to stop."

I chuckled. "Well, there's nothing for me to help you but…. You're look quite close with Aya."

Toma widened his eyes. "Huh?! Close? Me? With Aya? Get real, Tomo! She's the devil of the devil." Toma crossed his arms. Tomo chuckled.

Then I turned to Maki, who was busied with her work. She looked so happy and enjoyed. After that 'day', she had been saddened by me. I ignored everything. I pretended as if nothing happened. It was a cruel of me. Without realizing, I was hurting her so deeply. I once heard that she used to be cheerful and happy girl. But then, I was the one who destroyed everything. I admitted that I was the who made that mistakes.

"You know what, Tomo… Just now Maki had this lowly spirit. She's totally worried about you…" Toma turned to me. "And then, I told her not to worry as you will definitely win on that day." He laughed.

I was startled. "You told her about Masami?" I asked.

"Yeah… What's wrong? Is it wrong?" Toma stopped laughed. I shook my head and smiled. And then, immediately I turned to Maki again. Suddenly, she turned to me. I was startled. Instead of showing me her sad face, she smiled at me and winked at me. I smiled at her back. And then, she continued her work. Obviously, she was only covered her pain with her smile. I knew it yet I didn’t do anything. I couldn’t do anything as I was still put my hopes on Masami. It was a pathetic of me.

The day that I was supposed to win, I was totally made Masami cried on that day. The present that I supposed to give her, I didn’t make it. Our team lost in that semi-final game. In additionally, I injured my leg. I was so depressed and devastated. I couldn’t give Masami that winning ball.

As soon we headed back to our dorm, we took our bath and immediately packed our bags as tomorrow we will be headed back to Tokyo. I didn’t see Masami around like I used to be. I couldn’t bear to face her; I didn’t want to see her crying face. That night, I wasn’t hungry. Instead, staying in my room, I went out. So I took all my courage to walk. I had to use a walking stick to walk as I injured my leg. I told Toma not to follow me as I wanted to be alone.

After a long walk, I stopped. I sat quietly at the bench which faced the sea. Suddenly, Masami appeared in front of me. She smiled at me. "I thought I found you here…."

I smiled bitterly at her. I looked down. "Gomen, Masami…."

"Eh?" She walked slowly towards me. She then sat down beside me. "What's wrong? I'm okay with it. Besides, Shun had already given me that winning ball. I already have a boyfriend, you know…. So, I don’t need yours anymore…." she chuckled.

I looked up at her with teary eyes. "But…. I had promised you before; I would never lose on your birthday. I would always give that winning ball as your present. But then, I break that promise."

"Don’t be stupid…" She looked away. Then, she turned to me and smiled. But I didn’t see any cheerful smile instead, her lips trembled. "Yes, you did break that promise…. But it's okay…." She stood up and faced me. She patted my head softly. I looked up at her. She placed her hands on my face and smiled. "Tomo, I'm proud of you…. Seeing you playing out there is enough for me. I didn’t angry when you didn’t get me that winning ball because I like you, Tomo…. Always and always like you…. Well, even though I love Shun more than you…." She chuckled.

"Hait…" I smiled and she hugged me tightly. I didn’t know what to do. It was so warm in her arms. But I could hear her crying sound. A happy crying sound… But…. That was also the day I had made Maki cried. She saw us. And she saw everything and yet she didn’t even say anything.

If it wasn’t for Toma, I wouldn’t know the situation. Toma said that she had been searching for me that early in the morning. I was shocked. If that was happened, she must have seen me and Masami together. That was why she had been ignoring me… all the times…

As I walked towards the stairs, suddenly I bumped at Maki. She was startled as she saw me. She was avoiding my eye contact. Her stuffs were shattered on the floor. Immediately, I helped her out. We were in silent. Then, I turned to her and asked her.

"What is this?" I asked her.

"Ouh… This? Since that match, Tomo-kun has become more and more popular. These are the letters from your fans from all over the world." She said simply.

"Well, I don’t need it…."

"No! You can't!! You must accept it! It's a gratitude for you for being such a good player….." She turned to me.

"Is that so?" I looked at her and she nodded. But again, she looked away and picked the letters on the floor.

"Maki… It's about that thing…."

"Hait…." She continued to arrange the letters.

"Maki…. Did you…. That day…. When we lost at Koshien, the next day…." I looked and she suddenly stopped. She was startled but she didn’t look at me though. "I heard you went to search for me…" We were quiet for quite some time. I pressed my lips and took a deep breath. But before I could ask her further, she quickly stood up and took the box and walked away without looking at me. I called her out. "Maki… If-If… Today, I'll wait for you by the gate. Let's go and eat Okonomiyaki together…."

But she turned me down. "Gomen… Today…. I can't go with you. I have to stay back for my works here…" She didn’t even take a glance at me. But then, she turned to me and grinned. "Next time then… Gomen ne…" Immediately, she walked away. I looked at her as she walked away. And again, I hurt her…
