The other senior walked away and I too, walked back to my dormitory. Tonight, I will tell Charlene the good news.
As I walked back, I opened the file again and smiled. I didn’t bother to look at the other 4 pictures. Call me stupid or silly, but I think this is love at first sight.
[End of Recap]
I packed all my belongings into a luggage. I didn’t feel like staying in Hong Kong any longer after all. My mother was often not with me. Yes, I had a best friend, Charlene. She treats me very well but I feel jealous of her sometimes.
It’s just that she is so perfect. Maybe she didn’t have a perfect family, but she grew up to be somebody perfect. It’s like she was taught to do everything the right way even when she didn’t knew what it would do to help her.
She had the perfect skin, the perfect smile, the perfect skills. She had the brains, beauty and talent. She was smart, she was the best trainee nurse, she often got the highest in our examinations when we were younger.
She had the perfect big, round eyes. She had straight, white teeth. She had the most beautiful smile. She could sing, she could dance, she could act.
She was like the luckiest person on Earth and I was just plain unlucky to look a lot like her. I may look like her, but I am the exact opposite.
I didn’t have the perfect skin nor did I have the perfect smile. I didn’t have the look and the intelligence. I could not dance nor act. I didn’t do well in my studies and I was one of the slowest learners among the trainee nurses.
Every time people would say Charlene was a smart, talented and beautiful young lady. When people mistake me for her, they would always say: “Oh, you are Gillian? You are the one who only looks like Charlene but isn’t as good as her right?”
And whenever Charlene heard someone saying that to me, she would help me.
[Flashback]
We were just released from class that day after we had gotten our results for the end-of-year examinations. Charlene was still in class as the teacher wanted to talk to her about the scholarship program. But like always, I think that Charlene will give that chance up to continue studying with me.
I walked to my locker and a random guy walked up to me.
“Hey Charlene! How much did you get for the end-of-year? My class nerd wants to know if he had beaten you or not,”
I turned to him with an originally smiley face but replaced it with an annoyed expression when I knew that another person had mistaken me for Charlene.
“I am not Charlene –,”
I was going to be a good Samaritan and tell him that Charlene was still in class but he cut me off.
“Oh, you are Gillian? You are the one who only looks like Charlene but isn’t as good as her right?”
I wanted to reply but before I did, Charlene came out of the classroom. She had heard what the guy had previously said to me and she answered him on my behalf.
“She isn’t the one who looks like Charlene and isn’t as good as her. F.Y.I, she is the one who is better than Charlene. Get that right,”
Charlene walked to me and pulled me away.
[End of Flashback]
Yes, I should be thankful towards her. But I don’t need her fighting all my battles for me. I am the one who is better than Charlene? I know, that was somewhat a compliment, but to me, it sounded like an insult. She knew I wasn’t better than her. It was a known fact.
Although we appear to be very close, we weren’t. Maybe Charlene treated me as her best friend wholeheartedly. But, I didn’t fell the same towards her. I was always smiling and carrying good intentions for her but at night, when my mind is all to myself, I would want to change the whole thing.
I wanted to treat her badly, but I just couldn’t do just that. She has been treating me very well, but here I am, stealing her chance of going to Korea, the place where her parents may be at. I am taking her chance of meeting 5 guys, taking away her chance of becoming what she wants to be – a nurse. But I didn’t feel guilty at all.
It was like I am the evil stepsister that is trying all ways and means to stop Cinderella from going to the ball. But I didn’t mind taking the role of the evil stepsister if this could lead me to Prince Charming.
I continued packing all my things, without feeling a tinge of regret or guilt. I was being real selfish, but being kind to others is being mean to oneself. That was what my mother always told me.
That night, Charlene came back totally bushed. She has covered up all my duties for me the whole day. The minute she came back, she laid on her bed and slept for half an hour. I waited for her to wake up so I could tell her I was leaving for Korea but once she woke up, she went straight into the shower.
I waited for another half an hour for her to finish. When she came out, she sat on her bed and I settled down beside her.
“Charlene ah, let me tell you a good news,”
I could tell from Charlene’s body language that she was too beat to even turn to face me and listen to whatever I am going to tell her. But she still turned to me with a smile and nodded.
“I am going to Korea to take on an empty position in the hospital there, aren’t you happy for me?”
I think I spoke too much and touched on a sensitive subject for Charlene. I should have planned my script before reading it out to Charlene. Korea, was where she believed her parents were at and she wanted to go there more than anyone else.
“I’m sorry Charlene, I forgot it was a touchy subject,”
“No Gillian, it’s okay. But remember, send me a ticket to go there whenever you can,”
What she said has just made me feel guilty.
“I’m sorry,”
“Gillian, it’s okay,”
Charlene went to the dressing table to comb her hair. I wanted to tell her that I’m sorry because I am betraying her right now. There was a knock on the door. Seeing that Charlene was busy with her hair, I went to answer it.
There was a guy standing at the door, he was holding a bouquet of roses.
“May I help you?”
“I have carried a torch for you for 2 years now and I hope that you would accept my feelings,”
The guy said, pushing the bouquet of roses in front of my face and bowing.
“But, I don’t even know you,”
Charlene and I may look like each other but by our voices, you could tell us apart. And this was exactly how I didn’t feel guilty towards Charlene for what I am going to do – deprive her of the chance to go to Korea.
The guy looked up and immediately stood up straight and retracted his hands, pulling the bouquet of roses away from my hands.
“Oh, I’m sorry, these words weren’t meant for you to hear,”
I recognized this guy, he was Bosco Wong, the same class as Charlene and I. Charlene also has been crushing on this guy. The same guy whom I had feelings for secretly. But I gave up on him right now, now that the words he said are obviously meant for Charlene and not me. After all, I still have that 186cm guy in Korea waiting for me.
“Bosco, I don’t want to sound mean. But, Charlene doesn’t like you,”
Just then, Charlene from inside the room shouted.
“Gillian! Who’s that? Come here and help me with my hair, I have a little situation right now!”
“Hold on!”
I closed the door in Bosco’s face and went to help Charlene with her hair.
“Who was that?”
“That was Sammul,”
Sammul is another hot guy that likes Charlene. Charlene doesn’t have a good impression of him ever since she heard him saying that I was trying hard to be like her and that I wasn’t fit to be this close to her.
[Flashback]
I was sitting under the tree, reading a book when a shadow was casted on the page I was on. I looked up and saw Sammul Chan.
“Who are you to be a friend of Charlene?”
“Huh?”
I closed my book and stood up, adjusting my spectacles.
“Stay away from Charlene because you’re not good enough to be this close to her,”
“I don’t get what you mean,”
“Don’t you get it, geek? You are not as good as Charlene, so don’t bother trying to be like her,”
Sammul pushed me back but I didn’t fall, thanks to the tree behind me to stop me from falling to the ground.
“You’re just a second-grade copycat,”
His lifted his hand and was about to send it across my cheek. I looked away and waited for the slap to land on my face. But it didn’t happen. I looked up to see what happened and saw Charlene holding onto Sammul’s hand and then sending a slap across his face.
“Sammul Chan, stay away from my best friend,”
Charlene pulled me back into the school.
[End of Flashback]
“Sammul? What is he doing here?”
“He’s here with a bouquet of roses for you,”
“Open the door for him, I’ll do the talking,”
I walked to the door and opened it slightly. Charlene was still busy with her tangled hair. Bosco was squatting outside and he stood up immediately when he saw the door open.
“Bosco, Charlene wants to tell you something,”
Bosco’s face lit up and waited for Charlene. I turned back to Charlene and stood by the open door. Bosco looked into the small space that I allowed for his face to look in. Charlene didn’t turn to look at him and spoke.
“Go away, I don’t want to ever see you again, got it?”
Bosco was stunned, he moved back 2 steps and I closed the door.
“Charlene ah, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I am doing this, but I just do not want you to have happiness. Maybe it’s because you are winning me in everything and I just want to win you for once,”
