“Charlene ah, I’m sorry. I don’t know why I am doing this, but I just do not want you to have happiness. Maybe it’s because you are winning me in everything and I just want to win you for once,”
[End of Recap]
I leant against the door and closed my eyes for a moment. I needed to clear things out of my head.
“Should I do this to Charlene? Be an obstruction in her way to happiness?”
I stood there for a few seconds and thought deeply. I opened my eyes, I have decided to tell Charlene what a bad friend I have been. Then my mother’s words rang in my ear.
“Being kind to others is being mean to oneself,”
That sentence kept on repeating in my mind until I was hypnotized by it.
“Being kind to others is being mean to oneself,”
I muttered under my breath.
“What did you say?”
Charlene’s voice broke my thoughts. I looked at her, the comb was still in her hands.
“Nothing, let’s enjoy the time we have left with each other before I leave,”
I answered her and kicked myself off the door. I walked towards Charlene, who automatically turned her body to face me. We started talking about the fun times we had with each other. There were laughter and all, we even took pictures with our phone.
Then somehow, we started a pillow fight. After a whole 10 minutes of running here and there, climbing up and down, jumping left and right, we fell onto our beds which were located side by side. We were both panting, the pillows still in our hands.
“Gillian ah,”
“Hm?”
I turned to Charlene who continued staring at the ceiling.
“I’m very fortunate to have a best friend like you,”
She turned to me and smiled. I looked away, avoiding her eyes. She whacked my face with the pillow.
“Ouch!”
“What were you thinking about?”
Charlene turned herself over, so she was lying on top of the pillow. I sat down cross-legged, facing her.
“I’m thinking if I should give up this chance to go to Korea,”
“No you shouldn’t!”
Charlene exclaimed and sat up immediately. I look at her, shocked. I wanted to say I’d give this chance to her, but I didn’t think that she would want me to grab this opportunity.
“You should cherish this chance, go there for my sake. Take in the beautiful views of where…”
She stopped. I knew she wanted to say “Take in the beautiful views of where my parents were,”
“Never mind about that, you should go to Korea, no matter what,”
“But –,”
“No buts, you should fly there tomorrow morning and that’s final,”
Charlene whacked my head sideways with the pillow once more before running into the bathroom. I just sat there, stunned by her reaction.
If she knew what I had done to betray her, would she still be this good to me? I don’t want our friendship to end, yet, I am contributing to the factors that would cause our friendship to break.
“Charlene ah, I’m really really sorry,”
[Charlene’s POV]
“I’m thinking if I should give up this chance to go to Korea,”
“No you shouldn’t!”
I shot up from my position.
“You should cherish this chance, go there for my sake. Take in the beautiful views of where – Never mind about that, you should go to Korea, no matter what,”
“But –,”
“No buts, you should fly there tomorrow morning and that’s final,”
I whacked her once more before running into the bathroom. I closed the door behind me and closed my eyes.
“Charlene, why still be this good to her?”
I slid down the door and curled myself, heads on my hands that were on my knees, close to my chest.
[Flashback]
Senior So Young walked up to Gillian and started speaking, almost inaudible to me as I was standing at the other corner of the line. But I did manage to catch the last sentence though, “Stayback after this meeting,”
After the meeting, all of us went off except Gillian. I walked off but before I disappeared into the ward, I looked back at Gillian and saw Senior senior Yuri handing her a thick file.
I shrugged off the whole situation and went off doing my duties, and covering Gillian’s duties too.
After a few minutes, Senior senior Yuri came into my ward.
“Oh, hi Charlene,”
I looked up at her and acknowledged her presence.
“Hi Senior senior Yuri,”
“There was this girl earlier on who looked like you,”
“Oh you mean Gillian?”
“Who?”
“The girl who stayed back just now,”
“Yeah, her. She looks a lot like you. I think So Young mistook her for you,”
“How can that be? She’s known us for a very long time and she’s seen my face a lot of times already,”
“She mentioned to me about dropping her contact lens while rushing to the venue before you,”
I nodded. There was a moment of silence. When I remembered what I wanted to ask, I turned to my right and Senior senior Yuri was still there.
“Did Senior So Young give Gillian a hard time?”
“No,”
I stood there, waiting for her to continue. Apparently, she wasn’t going to give a complete answer.
“So, why was Gillian asked to stayback?”
“Oh, she is asked to take over a vacant space in the hospital in Korea,”
“Korea?”
Gillian can’t manage alone there, she can’t speak Korean.
“She told me she could speak Korean and So Young also said that she was the best trainee nurse here,”
“Gillian told you she could speak Korean?”
“Yes, she did. Why, doesn’t she knows how to?”
I debated in my mind on whether to tell senior senior Yuri the truth or to help Gillian continue with this lie. I was thankful that Senior So Young came at the right time to save me from this question.
“Charlene, what are you doing here? You are supposed to be in your dormitory now!”
I turned to the voice and nodded. I ran off into my dormitory and was about to open the door when I suddenly realised something.
“Why must I be here now when I have duties to cover?”
I was about to turn and walk back into the ward I just ran out from when I heard Gillian’s voice from inside the room. I pressed my ears against the door, so I could hear her and not have her noticing me outside, behind the closed doors.
“Charlene, I’m sorry, I am not a good friend. I am supposed to tell the seniors that they have got the wrong person. But I am selfish, too selfish to do that. Instead, I am going to seize this chance of going to Korea, I can’t bear to see you have any more success,”
“Was… that Gillian speaking?”
I couldn’t believe what I just heard so I opened the door carefully and peered through the small hole to see Gillian’s back facing me. She was holding a file, it seemed like the file Senior senior Yuri gave her earlier on.
I closed the door again, and walked away. I was shocked by whatever Gillian has just said. It was as if my best friend betrayed me. So my thoughts were confirmed. The chance to go to Korea was indeed meant for me, not Gillian. How can she be this cruel to not tell me about this?
I walked back to the patient’s ward and continued with my stuff.
“Gillian is my best friend, her mother has been treating me like I was her daughter. I am indebted towards them. I should just pass this chance up,”
[End of Flashback]
I woke up from my stance and walked out of the bathroom.
“Hey Gillian –,”
I stopped when I saw her on her bed, already fast asleep. I walked to her and pulled the blankets over her.
“Gillian, you’re still my best friend, even after what you have done,”
I went to my bed and too fell asleep. Today have been very tiring, it’s too much for me to take. Having my best friend betray me, having to find out that my best friend was my greatest enemy, having to know that my best friend was jealous of me the whole time.
I want to stop being this nice to her, but Gillian, is one person I can never be mean to.
