Chapter 13

Consistency

*Hong Kong Airport, 4:32pm*

“I’m waiting outside the gate for you too,” Tavia told Ron.

“Wait a minute, you’re at gate B right?” Ron confirmed.

Tavia sighed, “I’m at gate A.”

Ron laughed awkwardly, “I’m be there in a minute,” he hung up the phone and ran over to gate A. Ron and Tavia had been friends ever since they were small, they did everything together, if Ron learnt how to swim, Tavia would also learn how to swim, if Tavia learnt the piano, Ron would also learn to piano in order to be with her. The two of them were inseparable. It wasn’t until a few years ago Tavia had gone overseas to study hotel management in Australia that they split up for the first time.

Ron ran to gate A but Tavia was no where to be seen. He dialled her number again but Tavia didn’t pick up, “Come on…”

Tavia saw Ron and crept up behind him, “Boo!”

Ron jumped, dropping his phone not expecting Tavia to pop out from behind him. Tavia heard a loud smash on the ground; she looked up at Ron and smiled cheekily, “Sorry.”

Ron’s eyes were piercing with anger; he moved his head close to Tavia and stared right into her eyes for a long time. Tavia looked at Ron scared, it had been a few years since she last saw him, she wasn’t sure if had changed or not.

Ron leaned really close to Tavia with his face only an inch away from hers then smiled and laughed, “You should see how scared your face is.”

Tavia let out a gasp of relief, she hit Ron with her handbag, “I really thought you were angry at me.”

Ron bent down and picked the remain bits of his phone, “Angry at my best friend? No matter what you do I won’t be angry at you.”

“Fine,” Tavia turned around and pointed to the stack of luggage’s, “ you can carry though’s then.”

Ron’s jaw dropped open seeing three huge luggage’s and two other bags sitting nicely on a trolley, he tilted his head a little, “How did they even let you on the plan with all this stuff?”

“I had to flirt with the guy at the counter,” Tavia joked.

Ron started pushing the mountain of luggage’s towards the exit of the airport, “Ha, always using the same trick.”

Tavia playfully hit Ron again with her bag, “How come my brother didn’t pick me up?”

Ron was seriously struggling pushing the trolley in the right direction, “I haven’t seen him all morning,” Ron stopped the trolley before he turned a sharp corner.

Tavia stopped and could see Ron struggling, she stepped back and held onto the handle with Ron, “Thought you were stronger than that?” Tavia started pushing the trolley with Ron.

Ron suddenly let go of the trolley making Tavia push it herself. Tavia turned around and glared at him, Ron quickly held onto the handle again and smiled cheekily, “Just joking.”

*Grand Hotel, 4:42pm*

Kevin and Jessica stepped into the hotel, “I’ll just drop the documents in my office and I’ll be right back. Don’t move,” Kevin ran to towards the elevator as fast as he could.

Just as Kevin walked in the elevator Moses strolled out, as usual he wore his aviator sunglasses that covered about a third of his face. He stretched feeling bored as ever. Now that Raymond was forced to work, he had no one to hang out with so he spent his days sitting around his office or walking around the hotel.

Moses strolled into the lobby and saw Jessica standing by a column by herself. He smiled to himself and adjusted his suit jacket before approaching her. Moses leaned against the column next to Jessica and cleared his throat. Jessica turned around seeing Moses.

“Hello,” Moses greeted cooly.

Jessica saw Moses slouching against the wall; she couldn’t believe that her and Cheuk Hei’s descendent had turned out like this. She pulled on his arm, “Stand up straight and take off these black glasses, there’s no sun in here,” Jessica took Moses sunglasses off.

Moses had never met anyone so forceful before, he didn’t know why but he liked it, “Here looking for me?”

“No,” Jessica replied straight away as she scanned Moses outfit.

“Are you interested in working at this hotel?” Moses asked curiously.

Jessica laughed a little; she had never had to work in her life, “No.”

Moses leaned back against the wall, “You sure? Good pay and you don’t have to do much besides for assisting me.” Moses wasn’t even sure why he offered a job to Jessica.

Jessica looked at Moses, the way he was acting was beyond inappropriate, she couldn’t let her great, great grandson carry on like this, “I’ll take it.”

“Good,” usually Moses didn’t bother with anything that happened in the hotel but for some reason he felt a great attraction towards Jessica thus making up a position for her.

Kevin ran back towards Jessica, “Ok I’m done,” he saw Moses leaning against the wall, “Hey…”

Moses pulled Kevin to the side, “Do you know her?” Moses asked Kevin.

“Sort of.”

“How do you know her?” Moses questioned again.

Kevin answered curious as to why Moses was so interested in his relationship with Jessica, “I met her on the street.”

“Where are you going now?” Moses asked again.

“I’m taking her home,” Kevin replied.

Moses saw that this was his chance to advance on Jessica, “I’ll take her home. Frankie told me that you have stuff to finish,” Moses pushed Kevin towards the elevator, “Ok, bye.”

Kevin had no idea what was happening but he didn’t question further and walked into the elevator heading upstairs.

Jessica watched Kevin leave, “Where is he going?” she asked Moses.

“Oh… he has something to do, so I’ll be taking you home,” Moses requested.

Jessica didn’t think twice and agreed, she wanted to take this chance and talk some sense into Moses.

*Westwood Apartment, 6:00pm*

Ever since Moses criticised Bernice’s cooking, besides from work she would hang in her kitchen analysing how to make her dishes better. Bernice stood in the kitchen with her hands pressed against the bench as she stared at the ingredients in front of her.

Myolie and Charmaine were in the living room watching Bernice from the reflection of the TV, “She’s been staring at the ingredients for over an hour now, do you think we need to call a doctor to see if she’s alright?” Charmaine whispered.

“I don’t know. Should we ask her,” Myolie turned her head slightly but Charmaine tugged on her shirt not wanting her to turn around.

The both of them kept watching Bernice from the reflection. Finally after hours of staring Bernice clapped her hands and smiled. She whipped on an apron and started chopping and mixing the ingredients together. The smells from her food gradually floated in the air spreading throughout the apartment.

The smell was very familiar to Charmaine; Bernice had once cooked Charmaine this dish before. Minutes later Bernice walked out of the kitchen, very pleased with her dish. She took out two forks and gave it to Charmaine and Myolie, “Taste it.”

Charmaine and Myolie both took a bite, their eyes lit up at how delicious the dish was, “This is great,” Myolie complimented going for seconds.

Jessica opened the door to the apartment and walked inside with Moses following behind her. Moses had insisted in walking her upstairs, the moment he walked inside his face had totally changed seeing Bernice.

“You?” Moses pointed at Bernice.

Bernice pointed back at him, “What are you doing here?”

Charmaine and Myolie paused their eating. Charmaine once again saw her dad, though happy, she also felt that her dad just wasn’t the same person and she knew whom exactly to blame.

Bernice grabbed her plate of food off Myolie and stuck it in front of Moses, “Taste it!” she forced.

Moses glanced at the dish, “I’ve told you before, I don’t want to get food poisoning or die because your food taste disgusting.”

Bernice couldn’t take the fact her food was being constantly criticised by Moses, she turned around and grabbed the fork Charmaine that was holding and stuck it in front of Moses, “Just taste some, I guarantee it taste good this time.”

Moses forced himself to take a bite and once again he almost gagged, spitting the food out, “Stop serving rubbish,” he wiped his mouth of a tissue, “I’m seriously going to call the health inspectors to check the restaurant you’re working at. How can they let food like this be served?”

Moses turned to Jessica not wanting to taste anymore of Bernice’s food, “I’ll see you tomorrow then,” then quickly ran out of the apartment.

Bernice walked aimlessly back into the kitchen staring at her food. Jessica sat on the couch and took off her shoes, she clicked her fingers and for some reason Myolie automatically responded.

“Get me a cup of Chinese tea,” Jessica ordered.

Myolie quickly ran into the kitchen and boiled some water. Charmaine sat next to Jessica, “Where are you going tomorrow?”

“I’m going to be working at the hotel tomorrow. I’m keeping an eye on your father, I can’t let him turn out the way he is,” Jessica explained.

Myolie placed the tea in front of Jessica, “Anything else?”

Jessica shook her head and took a sip of tea. Charmaine looked strangely at Jessica and whispered in her ear, “You’ve never worked before, plus you’re a royal. Do you even know what work is?”

“No, but he said that I won’t have to do anything,” Jessica stood up, “Nevertheless I shall be starting work tomorrow with the rest of you,” then walked back into her room.

*Lam Mansion, 7:24pm*

Raymond was lying on his bed, he could barely move. Though he really didn’t do much at the hotel but if felt as if he had been working non-stop for the past week.

Frankie knocked on Raymond’s door with his bandaged arm, “How was work?”

Raymond couldn’t even talk, only noise came out of his mouth. Frankie folded his arms, “This is only training, your official first day starts tomorrow. Same time tomorrow morning,” Frankie reminded Raymond.

Raymond’s stomach started rumbling but he didn’t even have the strength. He really didn’t want to go back to work, the only thing that was actually motivating him was the fact that he could annoy Charmaine.

*Star Club, 12:18am*

Steven sat in the club that Raymond and Moses usually went to but for the past few days neither of them turned up. Steven took a sip of alcohol, “Where has Raymond Lam been these few days?”

“I heard that his older brother is making him work as a housekeeper in their hotel,” one of Steven friends answered.

Steven burst out laughing almost choking on drink, “Are you being serious?” he leaned back on his chair, “I want you to book me a room at Grand hotel for tomorrow.”

“But what would Joe think?”

At this point Steven really didn’t care what his brother thought, he knew that this was a golden opportunity to humiliate Raymond, “I don’t care at this moment, just book me a room.”
