Chapter 2

Inadequacy

*On the Street, 8:13am*

Moses leaned on his car looking into the distance, “Just give her money Ray, its obvious that’s what she wants.”

Raymond yawned a little, he put his glasses back on and turned around to Charmaine and looked at her carefully. In Raymond’s eyes, Charmaine seriously looked like she was homeless. Not only were her clothes half wet and ripped a little with dirt covering her shirt, her hair was all over the place. He rolled his eyes and grabbed his wallet from his pocket and took out $5000.

“Here,” Raymond held up the money.

Charmaine raised her eyebrows and glared at Raymond, “What’s with the money?”

“Just take it,” Raymond held it in front of her, “Your little, “I almost hit you with my car” is clearly a scam for money. But it’s ok because I have plenty of money so sparing a little to homeless people is considered charity.”

Charmaine crossed her arms and glared at Raymond, even though she is very wealthy herself but she hated people who were wealthy and flaunted their money.

Raymond waved the money in her face, “You going to take it? Not enough?” Raymond took out another five one thousand dollar notes from his wallet and waved it in her face again, “This is more than what you would of imagined getting.”

Moses who was still leaning on his car, reached inside and beeped his horn, “Let’s go Ray.”

Moses’s voice was becoming more familiar; Charmaine looked over at Moses and again couldn’t tell who he was. Raymond had a little smirk on his face and threw the money in Charmaine’s face. His actions had totally gone off limits and offended Charmaine.

She grabbed onto his shirt, “What do you think I am?”

Raymond tried to brush her dirty hands off his shirt, “Don’t touch me,” he pushed her hands off and quickly jumped into his car, “So have to throw this shirt out now.”

Moses revved up his engine, “Let’s go!” and sped off down the road.

Raymond looked at Charmaine who was still standing in front of his car and beeped his horn while he revved his engine before speeding off behind Moses.

Charmaine couldn’t believe that there were people like that these days. She bent down and picked up the money Raymond threw at her, “Give it to charity...”

*Cliffside, 9:21am*

Hsuan Huan slowly awoke by the surrounding noise. She looked around and saw people wearing what looked like Qing civilian clothes lying on the ground. A man dressed in a general officers uniform and started walking around talking to himself then fell to his knees crying on the ground.

“Why? Why do you have to kill my family?” he screamed bashing his hands on the ground, “Why?!”

Hsuan Huan shook her head in disgrace; she didn’t think a man should shed tears. Just as she was about to stand up and walk towards the general officer someone suddenly shouted out, “Cut! Good take!”

Everyone around her got up off the ground and started walking towards the vans. Hsuan Huan was confused, she thought everyone had died, she stopped one of the extra’s, “Young man, how did you awake? Aren’t you meant to be dead?”

The extra felt Hsuan Huan was a little weird, “Um… I was just acting.”

“But what about that general officer? Is the war over?” Hsuan Huan asked.

The extra gave an awkward smile then quickly ran off. Hsuan Huan had never met such a rude civilian before, especially towards her.

“Young man, I order you to come back to me at once,” Hsuan Huan yelled out to the extra, but he didn’t turn back around and kept running away from her.

Hsuan Huan looked around and saw everyone walking in the same direction so she decided to follow. She suddenly saw a few people wearing different clothes to her which she found extremely weird, she kept following all the extras and stopped when she reached a minibus. She had never seen such a thing before.

“Get on the bus,” the assistant director said shoving her on the bus.

Hsuan Huan walked onto the bus and sat inside. She had no idea what was going on, the bus began moving, “Ahh…!!” she yelled out feeling trapped.

Everyone turned around and looked at the weirdly. Hsuan Huan closed her eyes and grabbed onto the side for the whole trip back to the TV studio. After about an hours drive they finally reached the TV studio.

Hsuan Huan jumped off the bus, she looked up at the giant building that were so different to the ones she’d seen, she suddenly realised that she must have been caught by the Qing’s enemies.

The costume assistant walked up to her and gave her some normal modern clothes, “Change into this for you next scene.”

Hsuan Huan took the clothes, “I better do what they tell me so they won’t find out my identity,” she said to herself. She looked at the clothes, “How do I even wear this?” she watched as the other extras change into their costume and followed them.

*Cheuk Mansion, 10:36am*

Charmaine jumped off the taxi and paid him with the money Raymond threw at her, she closed the door behind her, “Why are their still such old taxi’s driving around?”

She walked up to the front gate and still didn’t really realise that things were different. Usually her front gate would sensor that Charmaine was home and open the doors automatically, she kept walking thinking the gates would open but they didn’t and she walked straight into gate hitting her head again, “Ouch!”

She rubbed her head and pressed on the intercom. A lady picked up, “Who is this?”

“Lan Jie can you open the door?” Charmaine asked as she kept rubbing her head.

Lan Jie, their housekeeper looked on the monitor at her strange face, “Go away or I will have to call the police.”

“What?” Charmaine looked up and suddenly realised that the intercom was an old one and that the gates looked different too, “Am I even at the right house?” she looked around and noticed the outside of her house a lot different to what she was use to.

She took a step back and looked at her house on a full scale. Everything seemed so different. For starters there were no automatic sensors to let her in and they were using the old CCTV system. The gates also changed along with some of the plants that she could see in their garden. Charmaine took out her mobile and started dialling her dad’s mobile but there was no reception.

“How can their be no reception?” she lifted her phone and moved it around trying to get reception but it didn’t even seem connected to the network.

Charmaine had no idea to what was happening, she squatted by the side of the road hoping that her parents or uncle would come home to let her in the house. Hours passed but no one came home, she was starting to lose patient as well felt really disgusting, she stood up and flagged down a taxi, “Grand Hotel, thanks.”

*Grand Hotel, 1:39pm*

The doorman pulled open door letting Moses and Raymond inside the hotel, “How are you Mr. Cheuk and Mr. Lam?” the doorman greeted politely.

Moses who was still wearing his aviator sunglasses tipped the doorman $1000 and walked into the hotel with Raymond. Grand hotel is one of the leading hotels around the world having at least one branch in every major city in the world. The hotel was developed by Moses’s ancestors shortly after the decline of the Qing dynasty and the business expanded bigger and bigger to being one of the finest five star hotels. Raymond Lam’s family had partnered up with Moses’s family owning 40% of the shares while Moses’s family owned 55% making them the bigger shareholder.

Raymond adjusted his glasses and yawned loudly, “I’m going to sleep for a while.”

Moses felt his stomach rumbling, “Well I’m going to eat something then. See you in a bit.”

Raymond yawned loudly again and stumbled to the elevator heading upstairs to his personal penthouse. The elevator door opened and Ron Cheuk, Moses cousin as well as Grand Hotel’s General manager stepped out, “Hey Ray, have you seen my Dai Gor?”

Raymond pointed to the lobby and waved goodbye at Ron shutting the lift door.

Moses looked around thinking of which restaurant to go to. It was such a tough decision to make for Moses, from a distance he saw Ron walking really fast towards him, “What’s with the haste brother?” Moses asked casually.

“Just had a meeting with a tourism company and signed another contract with them so they will bring their customers to stay at our hotel,” Ron said extremely happy like a little kid.

Moses shook his head and laughed as he walked towards one of the restaurants, “You get so happy with such small things. Even without them our hotel is doing great.”

Ron followed next to Moses, “Well it brings up our sales.”

Moses stopped in front of the Lakeside Restaurant and glanced at the sign, then walked inside. He walked straight inside and didn’t even wait to be seated and sat at the table next to the window overlooking the view.

“You were meant to wait to be seated,” Ron whispered to Moses.

“What’s you point?” Moses said looking at the menu.

Ron sat back and smiled awkwardly, “There’s not point,” Ron had always been intimidated by Moses, he didn’t know why but he just felt that way but that didn’t matter to him because he felt that it was in his nature to respect him because after all he was his older cousin.

Moses raised his hands and clicked his fingers. A waiter came running over with a pen and paper, “What would you like sir?”

“I’ll get this,” Moses pointed at the menu, he looked up at Ron, “What do you want?”

“I’ll have a cup of coffee thanks,” Ron said politely.

The waiter took the menus back, “Thank you.”

Moses took a sip of water, “Be quick I have other things to do after,” he demanded the waiter.

Moment’s later the food arrived at the table, Moses took a bite and spat the food back out, “What is this?” he clicked his fingers at the waiter again.

The waiter came running over, “Is there a problem?”

“You’re asking me if there’s a problem? Since when did you serve rubbish as meals? I want to see the chef who cooked this,” Moses ordered the waiter; the look on his face was somewhat frightening.

Ron didn’t say a word and sat back watching Moses. A few minutes later the assistant head chef walked out of the kitchen up to Moses’s table.

“This is our assistant head chef, Bernice Liu,” the waiter introduced.
