Chapter 21

Connected

*Jewel Restaurant, 8:12pm*

Charmaine stood across from Raymond hearing the whole conversation, though she tried to stay tough but her eyes uncontrollably had gone red with drops of tears running down.

“Charmaine…” Raymond stepped forward, although he only treated her as a friend but seeing the look in her eyes made his heart clench.

With a swift movement, Charmaine turned around running out of the restaurant. Without thinking Raymond ran out the restaurant chasing after her. Charmaine ran fast down the street, dodging people passing her.

“Charmaine,” Raymond ran as fast as he could, chasing after her.

Charmaine ran across the road into a park and ran straight into the female public toilet. Raymond ran into the park and saw Charmaine running into the toilet.

Raymond reached the outside, “Charmaine, are you ok?” he asked concerned.

Charmaine didn’t answer but leaned against the sink staring at her reflection, she felt so humiliated and hurt. She turned the tap and splashed water on her face as tears fell from her eyes.

Raymond felt so stupid, he should of asked his brother before setting them up. Raymond sat down leaning against the wall waiting for Charmaine to come out.

Hours had passes and Charmaine still wasn’t out. The wind blew into Raymond’s face as the night got colder, but he didn’t move and kept sitting on the ground waiting for Charmaine to come out.

Charmaine looked at herself in the mirror and smiled, she knew that relationships couldn’t be forced; she wiped her tears away and walked out of the public toilet. To her surprised Raymond was still waiting for her, “Still here?”

Raymond jumped up, “Sorry, I didn’t know…”

“It’s ok, I’m fine now,” Charmaine smiled confirming Raymond.

“It’s getting late, I’ll take you home,” Raymond could tell that Charmaine was just acting as if she was fine, he knew that deep down being reject was a hard thing. He decided that no matter what, he would try his best to cheer her up.

*On the Street, 11:06pm*

Bosco held onto Myolie’s hand as he walked her home, “Do you have an early start tomorrow?” Myolie asked Bosco.

Bosco shook his head, “Breakfast tomorrow?”

“Ok,” Myolie kept on walking, a gust of wind blew in her direction and she let out a sneeze.

Bosco immediately took his jacket off and placed it over Myolie, he straightened the jacket on her, “Can’t let you get sick.”

Myolie smiled and held onto Bosco’s hand, she felt like she was the luckiest person having Bosco with her and Bosco also felt the same.

Bosco and Myolie finally reached the apartment and unexpected Ron and Tavia were walking up the street opposite them.

Tavia saw them first followed by Ron, she turned and saw the reaction on Ron’s face knowing it still hurt a little seeing Myolie with someone else, “Hi,” Ron greeted.

“Hi,” Myolie said, “Um… this is Bosco, this is the general manager of Grand Hotel, Ron.”

Ron reached out and shook Bosco’s hand, “You’re Joe and Steven’s younger brother right?”

Bosco shook Ron’s hand, “Yes I am.”

“Nice meeting you,” Ron smiled quiet awkwardly.

Tavia could feel the weirdness, “Um… it’s getting late Ron, can you drive me home?”

“Sure,” Ron turned to Myolie, “Bye.” Ron and Tavia continued walking up the street. Tavia glanced slightly at Ron, she knew he still wasn’t over Myolie, seeing her best friend like this also made her feel as depressed as Ron.

*Lam Mansion, 12:20am*

Raymond arrived home and immediately walked upstairs to find Frankie and ask him about the whole Charmaine situation once more. He walked to his room and saw Frankie packing his bags in a hurry.

“What’s going on?”

Frankie stuffed a shirt in his luggage, “I have to fly to take the first flight to England, a situation has occurred at our hotel there.”

“Is everything ok?” Raymond asked quite concerned.

“Should be fine,” Frankie zipped up his bag and grabbed his passport from his drawer, “I don’t know if I’ll be back for the annual ball so just tell Moses. And also tell Charmaine that I’m sorry,” Frankie said as he walked out the room.

Raymond walked back to his room and sat on his bed. He kept thinking of different ways to cheer Charmaine up but everything he thought of was just not up to scratch. He lay on his bed thinking and eventually fell asleep.

*Grand Hotel, 10:30am*

Kevin and Moses walked towards Kevin’s office, “Do you know who you’re going to take to the ball?” Moses asked.

Kevin shrugged his shoulders, “I might go by myself.”

“That’s just sad Kevin,” Moses said shaking his head in shame.

Kevin laughed thinking that it was kind of sad, “Well I have no one to go with.”

“Hmm…” Moses tapped his head and stepped in the office forgetting Jessica was also here. He looked up and saw Jessica staring at him, Moses didn’t know why but he felt quite intimidated by Jessica, he quickly took his glasses off and buttoned his shirt completely and gabbed the tie from his pocket and putting it on.

Jessica was impressed with Moses and his eagerness to change, “Morning.”

Moses smiled fearfully, “Morning.”

“Why don’t you take Jessica to the ball?” Kevin suggested.

“I already have a date,” Moses lied quickly, “Um… why don’t you take her?”

Kevin looked over at Jessica seeing what her reaction would be, “Delighted,” Jessica replied without any consideration.

“Great, well I’m going to go now,” Moses ran out of the office so Jessica wouldn’t lecture him again.

*Grand Hotel, Lunchroom, 2:06pm*

Raymond sat in the lunchroom on his break still trying to figure out a way to cheer Charmaine up. Although it had been two weeks since the incident but Raymond still felt that Charmaine was slightly unhappy. Moses strolled in the lunchroom and sat on a chair.

“What are you doing here?” Raymond asked.

Moses had never come to the staff lunchroom before but he was bored as ever, “I came here to find you.”

Raymond pulled his chair close to Moses, “I have a friend that is quite unhappy, what’s away to cheer that friend up?”

“Are you talking about Charmaine?” Moses guessed.

“How did you know?” Raymond already made it not so obvious that it was Charmaine.

“Because that’s all you have been talking about for the past weeks, it’s always Charmaine this… and Charmaine that… Seriously do you like her or something?” Moses asked.

“No,” Raymond answered immediately, he paused for a minute and thought about it and shook his head, “No… I’m just a caring guy.”

Moses laughed out loudly, “No you’re not, I don’t see you caring about me and my boredom.”

“Shut up,” Raymond sniped at Moses, “Just tell me how to cheer her up.”

“Marry her,” Moses joked.

"What?" Raymond's voice had gone high and squeaky, hearing Moses suggestion of marrying Charmaine to cheer her up.

Bernice walked in the lunchroom, “Are you free now?”

Moses jumped up remembering that he and Bernice were meant to be cooking, “Sure,” he turned back to Raymond, “Figure it out on your own.”

*Westwood Apartment, 6:21pm*

Moses took the ingredients out of the shopping bag and placed it on the kitchen bench and put on an apron. Bernice walked out of her room and couldn’t help but laugh seeing Moses wearing an apron.

“Top shot CEO wearing an apron, such a Kodak moment,” Bernice laughed.

“I wear aprons,” Moses defended himself.

Bernice put on her apron and the both of them started preparing, “I really didn’t expect you to know how to cook.”

“Cooking is a passion to me, just because I don’t like to work doesn’t mean I don’t like to cook,” Moses said as he whipped up the egg yolks.

Bernice glanced at Moses for a bit, he was actually quite charming when he concentrates. Moses turned his head and saw Bernice peeking at him. She quickly turned back around and continued chopping the onions.

Moses finished with the eggs and prepared the batter, he also took a peek at Bernice hard at work. He smiled never thinking that she was able to stand his criticism, he really admired that quality of hers. From the corner of Bernice’s eye she could see Moses looking at her, “What are you looking at?”

“The painting on your wall,” Moses lied.

Moses kept on holding onto his mixed batter and stood next to Bernice looked at cookbook. Bernice didn’t realise how close he was and turned around bumping into him knocking the batter all over his shirt.

“I’m so sorry,” she grabbed a cloth and tried wiping it off Moses shirt.

Moses stood very still as he watched Bernice clean his shirt, he didn’t know why but his heart started beating really fast. Bernice looked up, “I think I have to wash it,” she said as she looked in Moses eyes.

The both of them stared into each others eyes for a long time not moving. Bernice could feel herself losing breath and like Moses her heart was beating very fast. Moses lifted his arm and held onto Bernice’s shoulder leaning in and kissing her softly on the lips. Bernice didn’t resist, she placed her hands around his waist and kissed him back.
