Chapter 22

Unexpected

*Westwood Apartment, 9:03am*

Charmaine strolled out of her room after just waking up. She walked towards the bathroom and turned the doorknob to see Moses washing his face wearing nothing but a towel around his waist.

“Ahh…” Charmaine squealed seeing her dad topless. She quickly covered her eyes and ran out of the bathroom back to her room.

Jessica sat up on her bed, “What is with all the noise young lady?”

Charmaine shook her head in shock, “Nothing…”

“Are you sick?” Jessica felt Charmaine’s forehead, “I’ll get Myolie to make some herbal tea for you,” Jessica got up and walked outside.

Charmaine jumped up trying to stop her, she knew seeing Moses topless would be really negative in Jessica’s eyes, “Wait…”

Charmaine reached outside but Moses had already gone. Jessica sat at the dinning table, “Myolie, Charmaine is sick. Make her some herbal tea.”

“Ok,” Myolie didn’t even try to resist, “What do you want to eat this morning?”

“Anything,” Jessica answered flipping through the paper.

Bernice walked out of her room, “Morning everyone,” she greeted in an extremely good mood.

Charmaine pulled Bernice aside, “I saw Moses just then in the bathroom.”

Bernice smiled, “Yeh, strange I know. Last night was so…”

Charmaine really didn’t want to hear what her parents did, she covered her ears, “I don’t want to hear about it…” and ran back into her room.

*Bus to Grand Hotel, 10:19am*

“The ball is tonight, who are you going with?” Myolie asked Charmaine.

Charmaine shrugged her shoulders, “Who are you going with?”

Myolie smiled, “Bosco of course.”

Charmaine looked in her bag and realised she forgot to bring a CD for Raymond, “I forgot something…”

“What?” Myolie asked looking in Charmiane’s bag.

“I wanted to lend a CD to Raymond and I forgot,” Charmaine zipped her bag up and sat quietly for a while, “Do you know what he did last time at the cafeteria. He mixed all these drinks together and it taste disgusting then he forced me to drink it.” Charmaine smiled remembering how gross that drink was. “Then he tried setting me up with his brother, which didn’t work out as planned but relationships can’t be forced.”

Myolie sat next to Charmaine and listened to her talk about Raymond throughout the whole bus trip.

“… and he waited for me outside the ladies toilet for hours, didn’t even realise how much patience that guy has,” Charmaine continued saying, “That Raymond…”

“Have you realised that you’ve talked about him non-stop?” Myolie interrupted.

“No I haven’t,” Charmaine defended herself.

“Yes you have,” Myolie was suddenly very bright, “not only today, but I’ve realised that you really like to talk about him.”

Charmaine had no idea what Myolie was trying to get at, “That’s because he is annoying,” the bus stopped and Charmaine jumped off the bus, “I’ll see you tonight,” and ran into the hotel.

*Grand Hotel, Function room, 7:00pm*

The Grand Hotel’s annual ball had started and every employee of the hotel has been looking forward to this event since the last year’s ball. It was the only time where everyone could dress up and have a fun time. Ron and Tavia were the first to arrive.

“Wow Ron, looks like you’ve put a lot of thought in the decorations,” Tavia complimented Ron.

“Of course, I am a very hard working young man,” Ron joked, “Shall we get seated?”

Tavia linked onto Ron’s arm and walked towards the front of the function room where the high managerial staff were seated. Jessica and Kevin arrived shortly after, Jessica browsed around the room. Although compared to her royal functions held into the Forbidden City, this function was small but overall she felt impressed that her great, great, grandson organised it.

“Our seats are over there,” Kevin pointed towards Ron and Tavia.

Moses was outside the hotel, a few minutes later a car pulled up beside him. Joe stepped out of the car and approached Moses.

“Welcome,” Moses greeted unwillingly.

Joe shook his hand, “Pleasure to attend your function.” Joe let go of his hand and turned around into the hotel. He walked towards the stairs and saw Steven walking up, “I thought I told you not to come.”

“How come Bosco can come but I can’t, I’m here anyways. Just let me stay,” Steven pleaded

“Don’t do anything stupid,” Joe warned Steven and walked up towards the function room.

Moses kept waiting outside until another car pulled up beside him. Bernice stepped out of the car, Moses eyes lit open and approached Bernice, “Hi.”

Bernice smiled, “Hi,” she wanted to ask him about the incident and what it all meant but didn’t know how to ask without sounding desperate.

Moses could tell Bernice had a lot of queries and wonderments, he smiled and held out his hand, “Shall we?”

Bernice felt relieved; she held onto Moses hand and walked upstairs to the function room.

Charmaine was the last to arrive; she stepped into the hotel and walked upstairs by herself. Raymond was downstairs and saw the backside of Charmaine and ran after her.

“Charmaine,” he shouted, Raymond ran up the stairs next to her, “You look…”

“What?” Charmaine waited for Raymond to finish his sentence.

“You look like you’re going to a wedding,” Raymond joked.

Charmaine hit Raymond with her handbag and kept walking upstairs. Raymond walked along her side, “So where’s you partner?”

“Don’t have one,” Charmaine answered slightly disappointed.

“Aww…” Raymond grabbed Charmaine’s arm and linked it with his, “I’ll be your partner.”

“Sympathy partner?” Charmaine laughed.

“Well I don’t have one either,” Raymond said as they walked into the function room.

The ball had started and everyone was dancing and socialising. Bosco sat next to Myolie and saw Steven across the room; he just knew something would happen now that Steven was here.

Moses stood up in front of Bernice, “Shall we dance?” Bernice accepted and held onto Moses’s hand towards the dance floor.

Ron and Tavia stood up walking towards the dance floor. Kevin thought it was time for him to be a gentleman, “May I?”

Jessica had never danced before, “I don’t know how to…”

Kevin pulled Jessica up, “I’ll teach you,” and walked her to the dance floor.

Charmaine got up from her seat, “I’m going to the restroom,” she told Raymond.

Raymond watched as Charmaine walked out of the function room. He looked back at people dancing and from the corner of his eye he saw Steven also walking out of the Function room turning the same corner with Charmaine. Raymond knew something would be wrong; he jumped from his seat and ran outside.

Charmaine walked out of the restroom seeing Steven waiting outside, she ignored him and walked straight pass him.

“I heard that Frankie denied you,” Steven said loudly.

“How did you know?” Charmaine stopped and asked.

“I’ve got my ways,” Steven walked closer to Charmaine, “But that’s about right, I mean look at you who would ever like you. It’s not like you are attractive or have any positive characteristics about you,” Steven started insulting Charmaine.

“Why are you insulting me? I don’t even know you,” Charmaine asked a little angry.

Steven was only doing this because she was friends with Raymond, “There’s no reason. I just can’t bare to see the world with someone like you existing. So pathetic, if I were Frankie I’d rather jump into a river and die than go out with you, “ Steven laughed loudly.

Charmaine’s eyes were starting to tear hearing those insults, she did say another word and turned around running in the opposite direction. Raymond heard everything, he pulled on Steven’s shirt turning him around and pushed him hard onto the floor, “Leave her alone.”

Raymond ran after Charmaine leaving Steven behind. He stood up from the ground, “You’re going to pay Raymond Lam.”

Raymond ran outside after her, “Charmaine!”

Charmaine heard Raymond shouting her name but didn’t stop and kept running. Raymond ran faster and caught up with her, her pulled her to a stop, “Don’t listen to that idiot.”

Charmaine had such mixed feeling of anger and sadness in her. Raymond could seeing the slight tears and anger in Charmaine’s eyes, “What he said isn’t true, my brother not accepting you, it’s because he didn’t see the greatness in you. But I do, I think your great and Steven saying that your not attractive, I think your very attractive, probably one of the prettiest chicks I've seen…” Raymond tried comforting Charmaine that he didn’t even realise what he was saying.

Charmaine felt a little tingle in her hearing what Raymond was saying. Raymond kept trying his hardest to console Charmaine, “Seriously, don’t let Steven’s words make you sad, what he said about no one liking you is not true, I like you very much…” Raymond suddenly blurted out not noticing what he had said, “So you don’t have to care what that idiot said…”

Charmaine’s eyes widened a little hearing that, she didn’t know why but uncontrollably she leaned forward and kissed Raymond on the lips. Raymond stopped talking; he didn’t resist and kissed Charmaine back. He wrapped his hands around her and kissed her passionately but pulled away quickly realising what they were doing.

“Did you just kiss me?” Raymond asked a little shocked.

Charmaine was just as shocked as Raymond was, “Yes.”

“Why?” Raymond could feel a trickle of sweat fall from his forehead.

“I don’t know,” Charmaine shrugged her shoulders, “Why did you kiss me back?”

Raymond wiped the sweat from his forehead, “I don’t know…”

The both of them stood in the garden outside the hotel in silence. Both didn’t move but just stared at the ground feeling so awkward. Raymond took his glasses off and wiped them clean, “Um…”

“I’m going to go,” Charmaine quickly said and turned around running towards the exit.

Steven stood behind a wall watching Raymond and Charmaine’s every move, he watched as Charmaine ran out of the hotel and dialled a number, “She’s coming out now…”
