Chapter 3

Coincidentally

*Grand Hotel, Lakeside Restaurant, 2:08pm*

“Is there anything I can help you with?” Bernice asked.

Moses sat back on his chair with his arms folded, “Did you cook this?”

“Yes, is there a problem?” Bernice could see by Moses’s expression that he didn’t like her food.

Moses lifted up the plate, “You call this food? Rubbish! This is most disgusting meal I’ve ever tasted,” Moses exaggerated a little slamming the plate back down on the table.

Bernice had never seen such a rude and unreasonable customer before and she really questioned his sense of taste, “I’m sorry, let me cook you something else,” Bernice said putting on a fake smile.

Moses got up from his seat, “You really think I’m going to eat more of what you cooked?” and turned around leaving the restaurant.

Ron quickly jumped up and put down some cash, “I'm so sorry…” he apologised to Bernice and ran out after Moses.

*Outside TV Studio, 2:37pm*

Hsuan Huan walked outside the studio onto the main road. Cars were driving pass, building rose high in the distance. She had never seen anything like this before. She was beginning to wonder whether she was dreaming or not.

She stood out the front of the entrance of the studio lost of all directions; she didn’t know where to go or what to do. All she could think of was how her husband Cheuk Hei was.

“Thankyou Mr. Cheng for letting us film in your hotel,” a television executive thanked.

Kevin Cheng, the assistant general manger smiled and shook his hand, “Glad we could help you guys out,” he looked at his watch, “I need to go back to the hotel now, I’ll confirm the time with you in the next two days.”

Hsuan Huan kept standing out the front, she suddenly froze when Kevin walked pass her, “Ga Wing?” she mumbled to herself, “Ga Wing,” she yelled out loud.

Kevin heard her calling but just kept on walking. Hsuan Huan called again, “Ga Wing…”

Kevin turned around and looked at Hsuan Huan strangely, “Are you calling me?”

She ran up to him and saw him not only wearing different clothes but his hair was different too, “What happen to your hair? Why are you wearing these strange clothes? How is Cheuk Hei? Is he well?”

All these questions bombarded Kevin, he had no idea what she was on about, “Um… I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“What did they do to you Ga Wing?” She asked intensely.

“I’m sorry ma’am, I have no idea what your talking about,” he smiled and walked off towards the car park.

Hsuan Huan kept on following him. Kevin turned around and walked a little faster. Hsuan Huan also picked up her pace but she wasn’t use to the shoes she was wearing and fell over, “Ahhh…”

Kevin turned around and ran back to her, “Are you ok?” he held her up and saw her leg bleeding a little. Though he thought she was a little weird but he felt a need to help her, “I’m going back to Grand Hotel, if you don’t mind I’ll take you there so you can wash up. Is that ok?”

Hsuan Huan nodded her head and agreed. She followed him and sat in his car, she didn’t know what was going on with him, the only explanation she could come up with is that he was being brainwashed.

*Grand Hotel, 3:01pm*

Charmaine stepped out of the taxi and stood at the entrance of the hotel. She looked carefully at the front door and everything was just so different, she didn’t know how things could just change so quickly. She walked up to the front door.

The doorman glanced at Charmaine and her ripped, muddy clothes, although he was hesitant but he still opened the door for her. Charmaine walked inside and again everything was so different, the interior was different even the people who worked in the hotel had different uniforms. Charmaine who still thought it was the year 2036 still had no idea that she had actually travelled to the year 2007, all she thought was that her dad just made some changes to the hotel.

Charmaine had always had a VIP penthouse room left for her by her dad. She strolled along to the elevator and pressed the button travelling up to the top level.

Raymond finally woke up from his nap and rolled out of the bed. He stretched his arms and lay back on the bed for a while. Minutes later housekeeping knocked on the door and walked inside.

“We’re here to clean up Mr. Lam,” Nancy said to Raymond.

Raymond got off the bed, “Ok,” and walked into the bathroom to take a shower.

Nancy cleaned out his room and fixed his bed before leaving the room. As she walked out another customer called her over, she quickly ran over not realising she didn’t close the door properly.

Charmaine reached the top floor of the hotel and walked towards the penthouse she always stayed at. She took out her card about to swipe it but saw the door was already open and walked inside. The penthouse was two stories where the living area was down the bottom and the top story was the bedroom.

Charmaine looked down at her clothes half ripped and full of dirt. She looked at her reflection through the mirror, “I seriously look like I just came back from the jungle,” she muttered to herself.

She took her backpack off and walked towards the bathroom. Just as she was about to turn the doorknob, Raymond who was on the other side opened the door. Charmaine jumped out of fright seeing him topless only wearing a towel.

“Ahh!!” she quickly covered her face.

“Ahhh!!” Raymond quickly grabbed another towel off the rack and covered himself, “What the hell are you doing in my room?”

Charmaine moved her hands slightly and peaked at Raymond and saw he was covered up, she moved her hands completely exposing her face.

Raymond who wore glasses could barely recognise Charmaine, he walked a little closer and squinted his eyes and saw who she was, “Ohh… it’s you. I didn’t know they let homeless people into this hotel,” he walked over and casually sat on the lounge, “how did you get in here anyways?”

“I should asking you that question,” Charmaine said firmly.

Raymond had a smirk on his face and put his glasses on and just stared at Charmaine.

“What are you looking at?” Charmaine asked coldly.

“Oh nothing,” Raymond stood up, “So are you going to leave or do you want me to call security?”

Charmaine thought his threat to be absurd, like the security guards didn’t know who she was.

Raymond picked up the phone, “I’m calling…” and dialled downstairs, “I want someone from security to come to my room now.”

Charmaine didn’t budge and just stood there glaring at Raymond. Minutes later, someone from security arrived, “What can I do for you Mr. Lam?”

“Throw her out of my room,” Raymond ordered.

“Yes, Mr. Lam,” the security guard turned to Charmaine, “Ma’am please leave this room immediately.”

Charmaine turned to the unfamiliar security staff, “Do you even know…” before she could finish her sentence the security guard pulled her out of the penthouse. Raymond stood inside with his arrogant smirk and waved goodbye to her as he slammed the door in her face.

The security guard pulled Charmaine downstairs. Charmaine was struggling to release herself from the security guards grasp, “Do you even know who I am?”

“No,” the security answered straight away. Both of them reached downstairs, “You can either book a room and stay here or leave,” and he turned around going back to the security department.

“What is going on?” Charmaine was now co confused to how Raymond was in her penthouse and why everyone around her became so unfamiliar. She rubbed her stomach as it began to rumble, “Eat first then I'll figure out what's going on…” and wondered to the closest restaurant which was a buffet.

“Just one person ma’am?” the waiter asked.

“Yep,” Charmaine took out her credit card, which expired in the year 2040 and gave it to the waiter.

He swiped the card but it wasn’t working, mainly because the account hadn’t actually existed yet, “Sorry but the card had been declined.”

Charmaine took her card back, “What? I’ll pay cash then,” she used the money that Raymond threw at her face and paid for the waiter. Charmaine grabbed a newspaper and sat at a table and began reading it. All the articles on the paper were so old, some events she even learnt during her schooling years. She flipped to the frontpage and saw the date reading ‘3rd October 2007’.

Charmaine leaned forward as her eyes budged wide-open, “2007? Why is this paper from 2007?”

Kevin and Hsuan Huan walked inside the buffet, “You look hungry, why don’t you grab something to eat.”

Hsuan Huan browsed around the buffet, “Ga Wing, I can’t eat with these civilians.”

Though Kevin thought it was weird that she kept calling him Ga Wing but he chose to ignore it, “It will only be for a while, I’m going to organise a room for you so you can clean yourself up,” he paid for her and left the buffet.

Charmaine kept staring at the date of the newspaper, “2007?” she mumbled to herself. She couldn’t help but to wonder what was going on, she looked up and saw Hsuan Huan standing by the entrance. To Charmaine, she looked familiar, she knew she’d seen her before but couldn’t think of where. It suddenly hit her, Charmaine took out the digitally enhanced photo of her great, great, great grandmother and looked at it then compared it to the woman in front of her, “What the…”
