Chapter 32

Devastation

*The Park, 10:05pm*

“Dai Gor! Dai Gor!” Raymond kept shouting into the phone.

Frankie shook his head a little waking up from the slight collision, he looked out his windows and everything was dark, not a hint of light could be seen through the windows. Frankie reached for his phone, “Raymond…”

“Dai Gor, I’m still here, what happened?” Raymond asked concerned.

“I’m trapped… a landslide…” Frankie was weak in his words; his head was bleeding from hitting the steering wheel, “Help.”

Raymond was starting to panic, “Dai Gor, I’m coming, I’m coming. Don’t hand up.”

“What’s wrong?” Charmaine had never seen Raymond so scared before.

“Dai Gor is trapped in a landslide, call Moses, Ron and Kevin to help.”

Charmaine quickly called the three guys as she and Raymond ran to his car and drove up to the mountainside. Raymond sped off as fast as he could, “Dai Gor, hang in there, I’m coming,” Raymond shouted in his phone, he was shaking, fearful of what could happen to his brother.
-------------------------------------
*Mountainside, 12:18am*

Frankie sat in his car, he was weaker than ever, the blood from his head had been bleeding non-stop and he was feeling out of breath. Each breath he took in was getting harder and harder, “Raymond…” he whispered weakly.

Raymond sped up the mountainside, “Dai Gor, I’m almost there, hold on!” He stopped his car seeing the fire brigades blocking off the area, Raymond jumped out of his car and ran towards them, “Dai Gor, I’m here, hang in there!”

Charmaine ran out after Raymond, the rain was still pouring hard, Raymond tried getting through but the fireman stopped him, “It’s too dangerous sir…”

“My brother is stuck inside,” Raymond shouted trying to push the fireman out of the way.

Kevin, Moses and Ron appeared shortly after, they ran out of the car and pulled Raymond back, “Calm down, Frankie is going to be fine, let the fireman save him,” Moses pulled on Raymond’s arm.

Raymond swung his hand away; he stood in front of the landslide and watched the fireman dig deep in the ground. Charmaine didn’t know what to say or do but just stood quietly behind Raymond. Kevin and Ron stood behind Raymond and watched. The rain was still pouring, hitting all five of them hard in the face, but none of them budged.

Frankie was still trapped in the car, he was beginning to run out of breath and started to hyperventilate, “Ray…”

“I’m still here,” Raymond shouted.

“You have to promise me to take care of yourself, take care of the hotel, don’t be so lazy anymore, ok?” Frankie said as he tried taking another breath.

Tears were flowing from Raymond’s eyes, “I promise you that I’ll do what ever you say, but I still need your help and your constant nagging for me to do things,” Raymond shouted.

Frankie laughed a little, “Didn’t think you liked my nagging and making you work at housekeeping.”

“I love it, if it wasn’t for you then I would be so useless,” Raymond could hear Frankie getting weaker and weaker, “Dai Gor, hang in there!”

The ground suddenly shook as the rain poured down, the mud from the mountaintop slid down even more, covering up where the fireman were digging. Frankie’s phone had suddenly disconnected.

“Dai Gor,” Raymond shouted into the phone, he threw the phone away and ran towards the mountainside. Moses and Ron tried to hold him back but Raymond pushed them out of the way.

The grounds started shaking again as a large amount of mud slid down breaking the windows on Frankie’s cars. Raymond ran forward, “Dai Gor!” he cried.

Charmaine pulled him back hugging him from behind, “Raymond, it’s too dangerous,” tears were flowing from Charmaine’s eyes as she held onto him.

Raymond stopped and fell to the ground, at this point there was nothing he could do but watch the fireman save Frankie. Charmaine kept on holding him while Ron, Moses and Kevin stood beside them watching.

Slowly the rain stopped and the landslide was steady. After another hour of digging one of the firemen felt the presence of a vehicle, “I found it!”

Raymond jumped up and ran over, the firemen kept digging finally exposing the passenger’s side to the car. The pulled the car door open and uncontrollably, mud slid out of the car. The firemen carefully reached inside and pulled out Frankie’s body.

“Dai Gor!” Raymond ran towards the body, “Dai Gor!” he shouted shaking Frankie’s dead body.

“I’m sorry,” the fireman said as they laid Frankie’s body on the ground.

Raymond knelt to the ground; his whole body was shaking as constant tears fell from his eyes. Charmaine knelt down next to Raymond, she couldn’t believe it.

“This isn’t happening…” Raymond said shaking his head, “This isn’t happening!!” Raymond shook Frankie’s body, “Dai Gor, wake up! Please… wake up!”

“Ray…” Charmaine cried holding his arm stopping him.

Raymond stopped shaking Frankie’s body, he had completely broke down, the turned to Charmaine and hugged her tightly as he cried in her arms, “Dai Gor…”

Charmaine held onto him, hugging him tightly as she cried along with him. Moses, Ron and Kevin stood beside them in silent tears. Frankie had been an older brother and a great friend to all of them, none of them expected anything like to have occurred.

*Lam Mansion, 3:48am*

Raymond hadn’t spoken a word from the drive back from the mountaintop. He stood in front of his front door with the key in his hand; he stood there for a long time hesitating to place the key in the keyhole. Charmaine stood behind him and placed her hand on his shoulder for encouragement. Raymond finally built the courage and stuck the key in the hole.

He pushed the front door open and stepped inside, for many years Raymond had never realised how big his house actually was but now with Frankie gone, he felt like the house had suddenly gone all empty. Raymond walked inside, soaking wet and with mud covering his clothes. He walked upstairs with Charmaine following behind, she was so worried with him, she had never seen him like this before.

“Ray…” Charmaine held onto his hand as they reached up stairs.

Raymond turned around and smiled slightly at Charmaine, “I’m ok… don’t worry.” Raymond walked towards his room passing Frankie’s bedroom, he stopped and looked inside, a subtle tear dropped from his eye as he saw a picture of Frankie.

Charmaine held onto Raymond’s hand tightly, “Ray…”

Raymond shook his head and took a deep breath, “I’m fine…”

The more Raymond kept saying he was fine the more worried Charmaine would get, she knew he wasn’t fine, Raymond loved his brother Frankie very much, and even though he would complain about Frankie making him work but Raymond still respected his brother in every way. Raymond shut the door to Frankie’s room and wondered back into his own room.

“I’m going to take a shower, I’ll be out in a minute,” Raymond said motionless as he grabbed a towel and walked into the bathroom.

Charmaine sat on Raymond’s bed and heard the water from the shower running. She sat in his room for forty minutes but Raymond still hadn’t come out. Charmaine got up and knocked on the bathroom door, but she couldn’t hear anything besides for the water running from the shower.

“Ray…” Charmaine knocked the on bathroom door again but there was still no answer. She turned the doorknob a little and it wasn’t locked, she opened the door to see Raymond sitting on the shower floor fully dressed. He had no reaction on his face but just sat emotionlessly as the water hit his face. Charmaine ran to the shower and turned off the tap, she grabbed a towel and wrapped it around Raymond. He had his head down and kept staring at the floor not speaking a word.

Charmaine placed her hand on his shoulder. Raymond had been trying to hold his tears in for so long but he couldn’t anymore, he burst into tears and hugged Charmaine tightly in his arms.

“Dai Gor… he doesn’t deserve to die… I…” Raymond could barely speak as he continued to cry.

Charmaine began tearing as she held onto Raymond, “Ray… don’t be like this, Frankie wouldn’t want to see you like this.”

Raymond and Charmaine sat on the floor of the shower, both holding onto each other crying. Charmaine knew this was tough for Raymond; all she could do for him was be with him and comfort him.

*Ma Mansion, 7:58am*

Bosco walked downstairs as he heard a loud laughter from the dinning room. He reached the dinning table and sat across from Joe who was reading the newspaper, “What’s so funny?” he asked as he took a sip of juice.

Joe flipped the newspaper showing the front page, he pointed to the headline, “Frankie Lam is dead!” Joe kept laughing, “Died in a landslide, serves him right. And that Raymond Lam, now he knows what it’s like to lose a brother.”

Bosco glanced at the newspaper slightly and continued eating his breakfast, he didn’t say anything about Frankie’s death but sat quietly listening to Joe ramble on about how Frankie dissevered to die.

“Now with Frankie gone, Grand Hotel will go downhill. He was the only person keeping the hotel running,” Joe placed the paper on the table, “I have to do something to take them down, to take Moses and Raymond, the two useless idiots down. This is the best chance.”

Again, Bosco didn’t make a sound and sat quietly listening to Joe.
----------------------------------------------
*Cemetery, 10:45am*

All of Frankie’s close friends arrived at the cemetery to see Frankie off. Raymond, Charmaine, Moses, Ron and Kevin stood in the front row. Everyone wore black and held a white rose to show their respect and friendship towards Frankie.

“Dai Gor, I promise to work hard and keep the hotel running and don’t worry, I’ll look after myself,” Raymond said as he placed the rose in front of Frankie’s tombstone.

Charmaine placed her rose after Raymond, “Frankie, I’ll take care of Raymond for you.”

Moses placed his rose after, he bent down beside the tombstone, “Frankie, thankyou for taking care of the hotel as well as me for so many years, I make a promise that from now Raymond and I will work out hardest to keep the hotel running. We won’t let your hard work go to waste.”

Ron and Kevin placed their white rose in front of the tombstone after Moses, “Frankie, I’ll continue what you have started. Thanks for teaching me so many things,” Ron said as he stood up walking next to Raymond.

Kevin stood in front of Frankie’s tombstone, “Frankie, don’t worry about Raymond, I’ll continue to assist him in everyway.”

One by one Frankie’s closest friends placed their rose in front of his tombstone. Jessica, Myolie and Tavia all placed their roses down and walked to Raymond giving him a word of comfort.

“Take care Ray,” Tavia patted him on the shoulder.

“Thanks,” Raymond looked up and saw Joe and Bosco walking towards them in the distance.

Joe stopped in front of Frankie’s tombstone, he took his glasses off and smiled, “Frankie Lam, never thought this day would come.”

Raymond stood directly in front of Joe, blocking him from his brother. He pointed his finger at Joe, “What do you mean by that?”

“Frankie dieing in a landslide, what a way to die,” Joe said with a constant grin on his face, “Who would of thought that even god wanted him to die in such a painful way. He must really deserve it.”

Hearing Joe’s word really made Raymond fire up but he didn’t want to do anything disrespectful, “Leave now Joe!”

Joe laughed loudly and leaned in close to Raymond and whispered in his ear, “Was it fate that your brother died this way? Or was it intentional?” Joe continued to laugh as he walked away.
