Chapter 4

Familiarity

*Grand Hotel, 4:31pm*

Charmaine held up the picture of her great, great, great grandmother and matched it with the woman standing right before her. She kept staring at her not really believing that people could look so similar to the point that they look like twins.

Hsuan Huan had a disgusted look to her face, she’d never shared a meal with civilians before and she wasn’t going to start now. She browsed around the restaurant hoping to find a more private place to sit and eat. She kept looking around and saw Charmaine sitting right across from her staring at her.

Hsuan Huan was never afraid of speaking her mind; she walked up to Charmaine and stood in front of her, “Young Lady, what are you staring at?”

Charmaine quickly put the photo facing down the table, “Nothing… Sorry.”

Hsuan Huan turned away and kept walking towards the back. Charmaine took a sip of water and turned her head slightly and watched Hsuan Huan’s every move. She held up her photo again and compared it with the person in front of her. Charmaine thought it was unbelievable that she looked exactly the same as her ancestor. She took another sip of water and kept staring watching her every move.

Hsuan Huan cleared her throat as a waiter walked straight pass her, “Servant, are you going to pull the chair out for me?”

The waiter stopped and looked around, “Are you talking to me?”

“Has you master not taught you correctly, what kind of a servant are you?” she questioned.

Having the thought of customers are always right the waiter pulled out the chair for Hsuan Huan. She sat down and took a sip of water but spat it back out. She stood up and without any warning she splashed the water in the waiters face.

Charmaine’s eyes widened seeing Hsuan Huan do that to the waiter, she took another sip of water and kept watching. The waiter clenched his fist trying to stay calm, “Is there something wrong?” he tried to ask nicely.

Hsuan Hsuan crossed her arms, “Why is this water cold? Has your master not taught you or are you just plain useless? I don’t even know how you can be a servant.”

Charmaine could see in the waiter’s eyes that every time Hsuan Huan called him a servant, his anger would rise a little.

“Servant like you are just useless and pathetic…” Hsuan Huan kept on rambling.

Charmaine watched as the waiter take a deep breath, she could tell he couldn’t stand her constantly yelling at him. He lifted his clenched fist up, Charmaine knew his next step would be to hit her. Although it was none of her business but she jumped up and ran towards Hsuan Huan and pulled her aside.

“Sorry…” Charmaine grabbed Hsuan Huan’s hand and dragged her out of the buffet.

Charmaine clung onto Hsuan Huan and pulled her out of the hotel. Hsuan Huan, who was royal had never been handled like this before, she swung her arm away, “Let go of me young lady. Have you not been taught well?”

Charmaine let go of her arm and stood in front of her. Hsuan Huan eyed Charmaine up and down, seeing her dirty and ripped clothes.

“That waiter was about to attack you,” Charmaine informed Hsuan Huan.

She didn’t answer her and raised her eyebrows, she could believe that a homeless person was talking to her. Charmaine glanced down at her clothes the looked back up, she knew exactly what she was thinking.

“You know that you shouldn’t of shouted and degraded that waiter so much,” Charmaine suggested.

Hsuan Huan was shocked to hear such a thing; no one had ever spoken to her like that before, “Young lady, you better watch your mouth. I can lock you up in prison for that kind of talk.”

Charmaine was honestly beginning to think the lady standing in front of her was slightly crazy, not only did she talk very formal, formal to the point it didn’t even sound like a modern person talking but she talked as if she was a royal member from the past. Charmaine gave an awkward smile and turned around wanting to leave. As Charmaine turned around, she bumped her backpack into a pole making a few of her things drop out. She quickly bent down and picked her things up.

Hsuan Huan looked down and saw a photo of her, she quickly bent down and picked up the photo, “Young lady, why do you have a picture of me?”

Charmaine stood up slowly, “This is you?” she pointed to the photo.

“Yes, I remember that day Cheuk Hei organised some western people to take this portrait for us.”

“You mean photo?” Charmaine interrupted.

“Yes,” Hsuan Huan stepped to the side and turned her back facing Charmaine, “When am I ever going to see Cheuk Hei again?”

Hsuan Huan’s gestures were somewhat weird and different in Charmaine’s eyes, she pulled onto Hsuan Huan’s hand and turned her back around, “Can’t hear what your saying…”

Hsuan Huan once again swung her arm away from Charmaine, “This is the second time you touched me, servant. If Cheuk Hei was here, I would have him take you to prison straight away.”

Charmaine didn’t know how to react but just stood there. It suddenly hit her that she kept talking about Cheuk Hei, although she was totally familiar with her ancestors but her father did mention to her once that her great, great, great grandfather was a general in the Qing period and his name was also called Cheuk Hei. Charmaine was a little suspicious as to what was happening, everything around her just didn’t seem normal. First she was let into her own home, a lot of the surroundings had changed, that strange man was in her usual penthouse room and lastly a newspaper reading 2007.

“Young lady, are you even listening to me?” Hsuan Huan questioned.

“Huh?” Charmaine quickly snapped out of her thoughts, “I think I know where I can help you find Cheuk Hei,” Charmaine lied. She wanted to know exactly what was going on and if her instincts were right the person standing in front of her had also a huge part in this.

*Lam Mansion, 7:31pm*

Raymond had finally come home after spending several nights out with Moses doing nothing productive. He wondered into his mansion and the first thing he did was walk to the dinner table to see if dinner was ready.

“Yuk Jie, haven’t you cooked dinner?” Raymond asked as he scanned the empty dinner table.

Yuk Jie, the Lam families housekeeper had been working for them for many years. Although she was a housekeeper but the Lam family had always treated her like a relative, “You brother said that until you explain to him why you didn’t come home in the last few days, he told me not to cook anything for you.”

Raymond pouted his lips, trying to be all innocent, “But I’m hungry… You wouldn’t want me to starve myself do you?”

“Then you can cook yourself,” a voice said coming from the direction of the stairs. Frankie, Raymond’s older brother walked down the stairs with his arms folded, “You finally decided to come home.”

“Dai Gor,” Raymond stood to the side of the dinner table.

“What were you and Moses doing in the past few days?” Frankie questioned.

Raymond thought for a while trying to come up with a lie which will make him seem like he was doing something productive but he could even think of anything, “I… Moses and I… were…”

Frankie sat down at the dinner table, although he knew his brother did nothing much but he wanted to see how creative his excuse would be.

“We went to learn how to fix cars,” Raymond immediately wanted to hit himself coming up with such a pathetic excuse. Even he wouldn’t believe such a crap excuse.

It was killing Frankie inside trying not to laugh at Raymond’s excuse, he actually thought that his brother would come up with something better but he was wrong, “Oh… since when did you become interested in learning?”

Raymond smiled cheekily and sat down at the dinner table, “Well learning is an interesting concept that I should put more thought in the distant future.”

Frankie shook his head and laughed, “Yuk Jie, can you bring out the dinner.”

Yuk Jie brought out several dishes and placed them on the table, “Master Frankie told me to cook all your favourite dishes.”

Raymond picked up his chopstick and started eating. Frankie started eating as well, “So are you ever going to work?”

“Work is for stupid people,” Raymond blabbed out.

“So your saying I’m stupid?” Frankie asked.

“No, what I am trying to say is that working is another concept that I will think about in the distant future,” Raymond said as he drank some soup.

Frankie put his bowl down, “Dad really wants you to work, he doesn’t want you to do nothing and spend your days pointlessly spending money. If it wasn’t for me telling him to give you more time, dad would of cut you off a long time ago.”

“And I thank you for that,” Raymond continued eating some rice, “Come on… working is just not me right now. Please… my best and only brother. I really don’t feel like working.”

Frankie knew he couldn’t handle Raymond’s plead; ever since they were small he had always been pushed over by Raymond allowing him to do what ever he wanted. Frankie gave in, “Fine… do what ever you want.”
