" OPEN THE DOOR!! I KNOW YOU ARE INSIDE!! RON NG, I WARN YOU, IF YOU DON'T PAY ME BACK THE MONEY BY TODAY, I'M GONNA SET FIRE TO YOUR HOUSE!! OPEN THE DOOR!! " Lincoln, the infamous loanshark was slamming the door of the old flat, and behind him, was his gang.
" Kor..Did you really borrow money from them? I..I.." Leila sobbed, clutching onto her brother's arm.
" Shh..Don't let them hear us. No fear, sis, kor is here." Ron hugged his sis consoling her.
BANG!
Lincoln kicked his leg against the door, with an impact so hard that the door nearly broke down.
" RON NG!! ONE LAST WARNING!! IF I DON'T SEE YOU WITH THE MONEY TOMORROW, MEET YOUR DOOM!! I PRACTISE WHAT I SAID ALWAYS WITHOUT FAIL!! PUI!! " With that, Lincoln signalled his gang to leave the building.
Leila was crying and shivering in her brother's embrace. " Sorry kor..It's all my fault..If I hadn't had this disease, our savings wouldn't be depleted..Sorry kor..What are we supposed to do now, that guy seems..-"
"Don't worry, kor willl settle this..Don't be scared anymore. Be good and go to sleep ok?" Ron patted Leila on her shoulder and touched her hair. Ron went into a daze, thinking what had brought them into this state they were in now.
* Ron's POV *
Dad was a gambler and a drunkard. He beat mum up whenever he lost money or drunk. Quarrels and fights were inevitable every day. Mum committed suicide when Leila was just 5 and me, 7. Dad didn't even come to mum's funeral to see her one last time. Overheard from the neighbours he was fooling around that time with some girl from some pub. Since then, there was no news of Dad. There were rumours of him being dead, but we no longer care about him. From then, I had to take on the role of Mum and Dad for the sake of Leila. It was lucky that auntie took us in, but she was always treating us badly. Leila was diagnosed with liver failure when she was only 12. Poor thing. Auntie treated us even worse then, she beat us up, scolded us, humiliated us...So when i turned 18, I took Leila away, becoming her guardian. Life has never been easy for us. She was in and out of the hospital for umpteen times and I had to take up 5 jobs everyday to make sure our lives were not disrupted. Leila's condition worsened recently and I had no choice but to borrow from the loansharks, but now she's even more worried about me..
Ron looked at Leila, who was already in her dream land.
"Trust me, I won't let you come to harm." Ron kissed Leila on her forehead and fell asleep eventually.
