* The night before the operation *
"Kor, I'm very scared. What if something goes wrong during the operation? I don't know why, I didn't have this fear when I decided to undergo the transplant,"
"Relax Leila. Nothing will go wrong. Raymond will be with you throughout the operation and I'll be waiting for you outside the theatre. Don't worry okay? Rest well and sleep well tonight," Ron comforted Leila, covering her with the blanket.
Leila nodded her head and drifted to her dreamland soon.
The door opened.
Ron turned around and put his finger to his lip. "She just fell asleep,"
Raymond nodded his head and sat beside Ron.
"She's worried about tomorrow?" Raymond whispered.
"Yea, I'm nervous also,"
"Don't worry Ron. I'll make sure she's fine. By the way, Tavia said she might not be able to come and visit Leila tomorrow. She's still been grounded,"
"It's all my fault,"
Raymond patted Ron on the back. "No worries, I'll think of ways to stop the wedding from taking place. I don't want to marry Tavia either. I want to marry Leila,"
Ron and Raymond sat there through the night, watching over the soundly-asleep Leila.
* The next day *
Leila was being wheeled to the operation theatre with Raymond and Ron by her side.
Leila held Ron's hand. "Kor, I want Tavia to be my Sister-in-law, okay?"
Ron agreed. "I promise you,"
"Deal! Raymond, remember what you promised me,"
Raymond gripped Leila's hand tightly. "I'll be the first person you see when you wake up,"
Leila was wheeled into the operation theatre and the "OPERATION" light was turned on.
Leila's POV: I must win this battle! I must!
Ron waited outside, pacing up and down.
* Time passes *
Ron was staring at his watch.
Ron's POV: Is everything fine with Leila? She has been in there for 3 hours plus already. Steady Ron, this is a major operation, obviously it will take a longer time. Don't be paranoid, nothing's going to happen to Leila! I wonder how has Tavia been this 2 days. She didn't give me a call at all. It's all because of me! Sorry Tavia. I'm so useless!
Ron cupped his ears and laid back.
"Psst! Psst!" A voice came from the corridor.
"Huh?" Ron stood up and looked around him. "TAVI..-!" Ron exclaimed in surprise but lowered his voice when he saw Tavia signalling him to quieten down. Tavia signalled Ron to go over to her side.
"Tavia! What a surprise! Who were those men that night? I was so worried for you,"
"Ron! I missed you so much!" Tavia placed her hands around Ron's waist. "I can't stay for long. I sneaked out of my house and I've gotta go back before they find me missing. My dad sent those men that day. Are you okay?" Tavia explained, touching Ron's head.
"Yeah, I'm fine now. Don't worry for me. I missed you too,"
Tavia smiled. "Okay, anyway, how's Leila?"
"She's been in there for 3 hours,"
"Don't worry, Leila's such a nice girl, nothing will happen to her. Help me send my regards to her when she wakes up okay? Anyway, I need a favour from you."
"Sure,"
"Ask Raymond to come over to my house tonight no matter what. I need to settle something with him,"
"Uh, sure. I'll tell him that,"
"Okay, thanks Ron. I gotta go now. See you and bye," Tavia kissed Ron on the cheek and turned back.
"Can you stay a while longer?"
"Sorry Ron." Tavia said.
Ron nodded his head and stood there looking at Tavia leaving him.
The sound of a door opening aroused Ron and he saw that the "OPERATION" light was turned off.
"Raymond! How's Leila?"
"She's fine. The operation is a success, but.." Raymond frowned and his voice trembled.
"But what!?"
"Leila's constituition is very weak and we are estimating that she will wake up tonight, after the anaesthesia wears off. But if she doesn't..There's a chance that she..She might become a vegetable.."
Ron felt something sharp pierced him in his heart.
"What..? You mean Leila's no better off than a living dead?"
"I'm so useless. I'm not even fit to be a doctor! I can't even save the woman I love," Raymond reproached himself, tears starting to fall.
"Ray, you've done your best. Don't worry so much okay?" Dr Kang came out of the operating theatre and patted Raymond.
"Dr Kang's right. Raymond, the operation is done. There's no use saying all this now. We just have to hope that Leila will wake up," Ron said sadly.
Leila was brought out of the operating theatre and wheeled back to her ward.
Ron and Raymond were walking to Leila's ward when Ron suddenly stopped in his tracks.
"I nearly forgot! Tavia dropped by just now and wants you to have dinner at her house tonight no matter what,"
"Oh, okay. I'll call her later and tell her I won't be going. I want to accompany Leila. Thanks Ron,"
