Chapter 27

Proposal

Chapter 26
Proposal

Chun and Ella’s relationship steadily progressed and their feelings for one another intensified greatly. Neither one wanted to picture life ever again without the other one, and they both radiated their joy quite visibly to those around them. Their friends and family noticed the changes taking place deep inside them. The pain of the past became less visible, and they both seemed to be reaching out for that happiness that they’d both denied themselves for far too long.

Ella sat in her office one Monday afternoon getting ready to leave for the day when she heard a knock at her door. Her eyes lit up in excitement knowing that the guest had to be Chun. “Come in,” she sang out.

“Hey, how’s my favorite supervisor?” greeted Chun. “I feel like I haven’t seen you in eons. You didn’t come play basketball last Saturday, and it seems as if our schedules have done nothing but conflict with each other.”

“I know,” said Ella smiling wistfully.

“I just wanted to make sure with you that you still had this weekend free.”

“Yep.”

“All of it? You’re not on call are you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“Chun, you’ve been so secretive lately. What on earth do you have planned?” Ella looked at him suspiciously hoping that whatever he had in mind was written on his face, but to her disappointment, she found nothing.

“As the week progresses, I’ll give you more and more hints.” Just then Chun’s beeper called him to duty. “See you later Ella.” He waved before hurrying through the corridors to the emergency room. With his departure, Ella released an exasperated sigh before shoving a few papers into her bag.

The next day, Ella arrived at her desk to find a rock sitting there. She was quite puzzled as she picked it up and turned it around curiously in her hands. It looked like a normal rock and felt like one. Shrugging her shoulders she put it back on her desk and rushed off to the emergency room.

Throughout the week, she continuously found strange things sitting on her desk. One day it was a bottle of sand, another day a pair of sunglasses. Finally on Friday, Chun came in person with a small bag. “I hope you’ve picked up on all of the clues I’ve left on your desk. This is the final item.” He smiled as he handed her the bag.

“Are we going away somewhere?” Ella knit her brows together in confusion.

“What do you think?” Chun gave her a mischievous grin. “Be ready by six,” he added as he walked away.

“So I’ll take that as a yes,” she mumbled to herself as she went back to work, shuffling through papers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When she arrived at her apartment in the late afternoon, she frantically dug through her drawers and closet trying to figure out what to pack. She didn’t have much time before Chun would get there to pick her up. It’d be a whole lot easier to pack if Chun would’ve simply told her where they were going. Releasing a sigh of exasperation, she decided on stuffing a pair of shorts and a swimsuit in her bag along with all the essentials.

At precisely six, she heard Chun ringing for her.

“Hey lovely,” greeted Chun with a twinkle in his eye. “Are you ready?”

“Do you see those bags next to your feet?”

“Yeah. Don’t worry, you’re going to love our destination. I checked with Calvin to make sure that this would please you. And I always love to surprise you, so why would I tell you outright where we were headed?”

“But it could’ve been helpful to know so that I knew what to pack,” muttered Ella.

“Where’s your sense of adventure? Besides, I’ll carry your bags if that makes up for it. And if you’re missing anything, I’d be more than happy to go out and buy whatever you need.” Chun looked at her hopefully.

“Fine,” sighed Ella. “But you’d better not go back on your promise.”

“I won’t.” Chun bent down to pick up the bags and pretended to struggle with lifting them up. Ella reached out and smacked him making Chun stop his teasing.

He lifted the bags with great ease and transferred the one in his right hand to his left hand leaving his right hand free to offer to Ella. She grabbed it without hesitation and followed Chun out to his car. After all, she trusted him; her fears had seemed to slowly fall away as her relationship with Chun became deeper and deeper.

As they reached the outer-limits of Taipei, Chun flicked the switch on his dashboard to turn on a CD. “Hope you don’t mind,” he added as he turned to look at Ella. “It’s just some stuff to get in the mood.”

“No, I don’t mind at all. It sounds nice.” She turned her head to gaze out the window.

“You aren’t angry about this are you?” asked Chun worriedly.

“No. Why would I be?” asked Ella slightly puzzled.

“I don’t know. I just want this weekend to be perfect. That’s all.”

“Well you have the element of suspense. And then there’s the change of scenery. You’re doing fine so far.” She smiled reassuringly to Chun. “It’s just that I’m tired.”

“Well this weekend you can relax,” replied Chun as he kept his eyes on the road before him. Glancing at her, he added, “I’ve missed you a lot.”

“Me too. But I suppose that’s just part of our profession. You can’t really expect to have lots of time,” replied Ella wistfully.

They sat in comfortable silence for the rest of the trip as Chun’s music filled the car. Chun noticed that Ella had eventually fallen asleep.

When Chun pulled up to a small inn by the sea, Ella woke up and exclaimed excitedly, “The sea! Chun, this is amazing. How did you know that I love going to the sea? Oh wait, you said you talked to Calvin.”

“Wait. So, what you’re saying is that I can’t choose a destination that’d make you happy without the help of your brother?” replied Chun trying to sound hurt. “We can always turn back.”

“No!”

“All right, I’m turning around,” teased Chun as he put the car in gear.

“Please,” begged Ella.

“Will you admit that Calvin didn’t help me choose the trip? That he just told me that you’d like it?” asked Chun, his eyes twinkling brightly.

“Yes. Now are we staying in the car or getting out?” Ella’s voice rose in pitch marking her impatience.

In reply Chun put the car in park and turned it off, taking the key out of the ignition. “If I give you the key to the car, will you believe me?”

“You’re trusting me with this?” asked Ella incredulously. “What if I decide to abandon you when you aren’t paying attention? I could do this so easily you know.”

“And why would you do that? You know that you need me like I need you,” Chun retorted as he grinned confidently. “If you did that, we might never see each other again. That’d be quite tragic.”

“They could make a drama out of it,” joked Ella. “Now are we getting out or what? I’ve already seen your car, and though it’s very nice, I’d prefer spending time there rather than here.”

“What’s wrong with my car?” asked Chun, acting miffed.

“Nothing. But the inn and the sea are infinitely better.” She opened the door before Chun could attempt to lock it and continue teasing her. Jumping out of the passenger’s side, she stretched her arms out to the sky and inhaled deeply as a soft smile spread across her face. Racing to the driver’s side, Ella opened the door for Chun and grabbed onto his arm to pull him out.

“Calm down little girl,” teased Chun.

“Are you calling me a child?” retorted Ella.

Laughing, Chun replied, “Sure. You’re definitely acting like one. I’d compare you to a little girl on her birthday. But I love all of you anyways.”

Chun allowed her to pull him out, and as soon as his feet hit the ground, he bent down to give her a peck on the lips. Ella wrapped her fingers in Chun’s shirt and sighed when Chun pulled away from her.

“I should get the bags and check in,” murmured Chun reluctantly. Making a face, Ella loosened her fingers and followed Chun around to the trunk of the car, watching him lift the bags out. However, this time he couldn’t give her his hand since he had his bag as well. “You coming?” called Chun as he began to trudge towards the inn.

“Yeah.” Ella dashed after him and pulled one of her bags out of his hands. “I can help you since you have to carry so much. After all, though it’s nice watching you, I’d feel guilty making you do all the work.”

“Oh, she has feelings does she?” teased Chun.

“Of course,” replied Ella haughtily tilting her chin upwards.

As they approached the doors, Ella raced energetically ahead and pushed the door open holding it with her body. Chun slowly caught up with Ella, and grinning, Ella greeted him. “After you my kind sir.” She gestured for Chun to enter.

“Aren’t I supposed to be doing that? You hurt me.” Chun mocked disappointment. “After all, a lady should never have to open a door if she has someone here to do it for her.”

“I insist, and if you continue to stand here, I’m going to go in and let the door shut on you. And don’t you think I’d feel guilty this time.” She pretended to glare at him.

Chun released a sigh and entered setting the bags down in a corner by a set of stairs before walking up to the front desk. A middle-aged woman looked up from the desk and greeted Chun with a bright smile.

Ella stood by the luggage waiting on Chun who stood at the counter as the woman checked them in. Looking around the room, she noted the many antiques and sea themed artwork filling it up. It seemed like a nice, intimate place to stay—the perfect escape from the rest of the world. Shelves of books lined one wall containing books left by travelers and old ones that’d probably been there forever. Many of them seemed to pertain to the sea whether it be boating, collecting shells, or whale watching. The wooden floor creaked as Chun came up to her and gently touched her arm.

Chun and Ella both grabbed the bags. Ella, eager to see the room, raced up the flight of stairs. Reaching the door first, she leaned against the wall, still clutching the bags in her hands.

“Geez you’re fast,” remarked Chun as he came up to the door, holding out the key. He jammed the key into the lock and turned it in the hole. The door stubbornly resisted, so he jiggled it a little.

“Stupid door,” muttered Chun when the door finally opened to reveal a light airy room with a single bed, nicely covered. A desk with a lamp sat in the corner near the sliding French doors opening onto a balcony. Ella rushed into the room eagerly dropping her bags next to the bed and began exploring the whole room, opening drawers and windows like a curious child. A fresh sea breeze blew into the room rustling the white curtains. Chun watched her childlike behavior in deep amusement.

“Chun” called Ella from the balcony, “come out here and look at the beach. The sea’s so amazing. I love how powerful it is. Come on. Hurry!”

Grinning, Chun set his bag down next to Ella’s bags and joined her on the balcony. He inhaled the salty breeze enjoying the feel of the wind playing with his hair. “This feels so good,” he thought as he kept his eyes lovingly trained on Ella. He walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her hair and taking in the scent of her shampoo.

“Chun, this is the most amazing place you could possibly choose,” murmured Ella. She stood as still as possible inhaling Chun’s cologne and hoping that this moment would never end. In all her life, she didn’t think she could ever feel this happy.

“Chun,” whispered Ella, “I love you. I really do.” She placed her arms around Chun’s waist, holding on as tightly as possible.

“I love you too,” Chun replied in a soft tone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both Chun and Ella sat on the deck of a small seafood restaurant looking out to sea occasionally. Chun took note of how lost Ella would become as she gazed off at the horizon. Touching her hand lightly, he asked her if she wanted a bottle of wine.

She nodded but continued to stare at the powerful sea. Absently, she told Chun that they could order whenever he wanted.

Chun waved to a waitress, and she came over to the table giving Chun a broad, flirty smile. Chun returned her smile politely and said, “I think we’re ready to order.”

“Okay,” replied the waitress, slightly miffed that Chun acted so indifferently towards her. She whipped out her notepad and took the order before walking off to give it to the kitchen. A few minutes later, she returned carrying a bottle of wine. “Here you are,” she said sweetly as she poured Chun and Ella each a glass of wine.

Ella took her mind off the sea and shifted her focus to Chun instead. Picking up her glass of wine, she teased, “Wow, with the charming romantic atmosphere this restaurant has I suppose I ought to eat and drink carefully. Who knows what might be in either my alcohol or my food. You did your research well Ah Zun Zun.” She then cautiously put the glass to her mouth and sipped slowly.

“Are you trying to suggest that I propose to you?” asked Chun with a spark of joy glinting in his eyes.

“Maybe,” replied Ella nonchalantly.

“But you honestly think I’d propose when you expect it? I’d have to surprise you. After all that’s my way isn’t it? That’s what you say anyways.”

“So does that mean we’re never getting married?” asked Ella acting sad.

“Of course not,” replied Chun feigning offense. “It just wouldn’t be my style to follow along with the cliché romantic notions of other men. I have my own style.”

“I know,” said Ella saucily.

They enjoyed their dinner immensely continuing along with their usual joking. The check came, and Chun gladly paid for it. He waited impatiently for his card to come back. As soon as it arrived he practically leaped out of his chair.

Ella started to giggle. “Did it bite you my dear?”

Chun flushed scarlet. “No,” he retorted. He rushed around to Ella’s side of the table and helped her up. Guiding her out of the restaurant he bent down and whispered in her ear, “Do you want to go for a walk along the beach?”

Ella grinned. “It’s as if you read my mind. But first let me take off these shoes and put them in your car. I’d prefer to be barefoot.”

“That sounds like a great idea,” agreed Chun.

They headed to Chun’s car, Ella leaning on Chun’s arm to pull off her shoes. As soon as they’d gotten rid of their shoes, Ella raced off towards the beach with Chun running after her. He caught up with her by the time they reached the restaurant building and sprinted ahead of her.

Seeing Chun trying to accelerate ahead of her made Ella push her pace, but unfortunately, she couldn’t close the distance between them. Reaching the sandy shores, Chun collapsed on the ground breathing hard; when Ella arrived, she plopped down next to him trying to catch her breath.

“That was fun,” she commented happily. “But I don’t think it’s fair of you to race ahead. How come you’re so fast?”

“Well, I just am. I run a lot. But it didn’t do me any good when I actually needed to catch you,” he added wryly.

“Things worked out in the end though, so let’s not dwell on the past,” replied Ella softly. She extended her left arm and grabbed Chun’s hand in hers, squeezing it gently. Gazing up at the setting sky, Ella mused, “I can’t believe that at one point I detested you. Now I couldn’t imagine not loving you. But from the very first day I sponsored you, I hated you.”

“Really. Why?”

“Well, you insulted my abilities as a doctor and well you know…” her voice trailed off.

Chun tightened his hand around hers reassuringly knowing exactly where her thoughts were going. A lump formed in his throat realizing that he’d once been on the same level in her mind as the man of her nightmares. The familiar monster he’d become so well acquainted with lately writhed in his stomach. Thoughts of how to kill Ella’s cruel abuser briefly flashed through his mind. Ella’s voice drew him back from his dark fantasies.

“I already felt bad enough after having lost a patient of mine, a little boy, and your comment only made me feel worse. So I decided to ask Dr. Lu to change your sponsor. Sometimes I feel like the only reason I’m as successful as I am at the hospital is because of his mocking me and telling me that I could never be any good as a doctor. When I lost the little boy though, I felt like he was right.” Tears began to trickle down Ella’s cheeks.

Chun sensed her pain and sat up to see her tears. Gently, with his thumbs, he wiped them away. He drew Ella close to him and held her tightly.

“God Ella,” choked Chun, “I feel so terrible for having caused you more pain. You’re a great doctor; I never doubted that. I simply didn’t like working in close proximity with a woman since I feared becoming close to one only to get rejected once again. So when I said what I did, I only meant that I didn’t like having you so close to me. But like you said, it’s all behind us.” He placed a tender kiss on her forehead.

Ella pulled away from Chun with swollen red eyes. She smiled and replied, “Thanks. You make me feel so much better. And I don’t hate you now at all. I know that you’re different.” She then leaned back into Chun’s arms.

As the night closed in on the couple, Ella grew excited and pulling away from Chun, jumped to her feet. She gestured at Chun to get up and follow her as she raced along the shoreline feeling the waves crash against her feet. Pushing along further as the water splashed onto her clothing and into her hair, she shrieked out of pure joy. Chun dashed after her keeping his distance from the sea.

When Ella arrived at the base of a pile of boulders, her eyes gleamed excitedly and she scrambled up the side of them before Chun could prevent her from climbing them. She refused to stop until she’d reached the top where she gazed out on the moon’s reflection in the sea. Panting, Chun arrived next to her.

“Don’t you ever run out of energy or sit still?” grumbled Chun. “You could fall and get hurt climbing these boulders.”

“Oh Chun, sometimes you worry too much.” She swatted at his arm playfully before plopping down on the rock she stood on. Losing herself in the sea’s beauty all over again, she softly said, “I never thought that I’d reach the horizon, but now I can see it. If I could just stretch my arms out enough for it, I could grasp it.”

She then reached out for Chun’s arms, dangling at his side. “See,” she proclaimed happily, forgetting about respecting the night’s tranquility, “I reached it!” Chuckling she pulled Chun down next to her. “Isn’t the sea amazing?”

“It is.” Knowing that now was the moment, the butterflies in Chun’s stomach fluttered wildly. Taking a deep breath, he dug into his jeans pocket and turned towards Ella.

“Ella, we’ve known each other now for almost a year and have been together for six blissful months, eight if you want to include the time where you reluctantly agreed to date me. And I have known long before these six months that you were the woman that I wanted to marry.”

Ella inhaled sharply at these words, her heart pounding fiercely.

“What I am trying to say is this. Will you marry me? Together we can strive for happiness. I know that since I’ve had you, my whole life has been filled with more joy than I could possibly imagine.”

“Yes,” breathed Ella, a small smile curling delicately on her lips.

Chun reached out for Ella’s hand and placed a beautiful silver band with delicate engravings on Ella’s finger. He then leaned in for a kiss and whispered, “I love you. I can’t tell you that enough or express how much. My love for you is beyond words.” His lips met Ella’s, and they stayed together, lips interlocking for quite a while.

When they pulled away from one another, Ella whispered, “But I want my parents to meet you before we make the engagement official.”

“All right. That seems fair. And I still haven’t met your parents.”

“Well, they live so far away that meeting them becomes quite difficult.” She held out her hand to Chun and asked, “Should we go back to the inn?”

“Sounds like a good idea,” agreed Chun as he pulled himself up. He then turned to Ella and helped her back to her feet. Ella eagerly started to scramble back down the rocks, but Chun prevented her from taking more than a few steps. “Careful,” he warned worriedly. “Let me help you down.”

Ella groaned. “I’ll be fine.”

Yet Chun stayed right behind Ella holding his hands out for her to make sure that if she slipped, he could catch her. Ella reached the bottom without a problem. Chun, on the other hand, got to the last few boulders and lost his footing. His arms flew out bracing him and preventing him from completely falling.

“Be careful,” taunted Ella.

“Don’t mock me,” replied a slightly peeved Chun.

“Oh, now there’s no reason to get upset. I was only concerned for you.”

“With that tone?” laughed Chun incredulously. “I don’t believe you.”

“Believe what you want then,” retorted Ella as she started to head back in the direction of the car.

“Hey wait up,” cried Chun. He sprinted after her, amazed that, despite having raced across half of the shoreline and climbing up and down a huge hill of boulders, she still had enough energy to dash off towards the car.

“Well,” he thought, “if she wasn’t so full of surprises, then she wouldn’t be my Ella.”

If people are interested and either leave me an email address or a pm on CEFC, I can write an extra about that scence, but I didn't feel like it was fitting to the story to include it.

Anyways, if you're very good, tomorrow evening (my time) this story will have a [Completed] next to it. hehe.
