Chapter 12

Land of the Giants

Then it was time the stars came out to decorate the skies. Inky black with scattered diamonds sparkling, the fugitives of Empire set out once more --- They could not afford to get caught again.

“So where are you going, Red?”

Kazo asked the Kurt solemnly. Throughout these days, she has proven herself to be trustworthy, and he doubts her no more. But just when he thought that this formidable woman will join them in their journey, she announced her leave. Under the moonlight, her blonde locks were mesmerizing. With her slender fingers posing in front of her face, the Kurt laughed hysterically.

“I know you’re going to miss me, Kazo, but rest assured that I’ll meet you all up again once my job is done. “

”What?!”

Kazo knew she is a rowdy woman, but he never knew she is shrewd with her mouth too. Being the boss of a bunch of male Kurts must have educated her this way.

“What job is that? Bounty hunting again?”

This time, it was Lilith who asked. When she accidentally fell her eyes on Azure, she looked quickly away the next second.

“I am hunting, but not for money this time.”

“??”

“…I have to find my brother. He was a Mu user just like you and Azure. We got separated eight years ago when the Humans attacked our kingdom.”

Although she did not show on her smiling face, she does sound a little tragic in her tone. Turning around, she walked towards Azure and caught him into her arms like a loving big sister. Pasting her face against his hair, everybody thought that the Kurt wanted to bite him. But rather, she merely whispered into his ears.

”My brother would have been your age if he is still alive. “

Azure widened his eyes, but could find no suitable words to tell her. The Kurt released him from her grasps.

”Aren’t you biting him? And… and… suck his blood?”

Kazo spoke cautiously, with his fists ready to strike.

“Misconception. Kurts are NOT blood-suckers. Oh man, these twerps need some serious re-teaching.”

Kazo and Lilith appeared to be skeptical. Gunter hid his laughter so that nobody could see. He was the person who told the others that Kurts were blood suckers, and he meant that to be a prank.

“Come on, you saw me eating greens too didn’t you? Argh, nevermind. Gotta go now. Till then, take care of yourselves and don’t die!!”

With a powerful kick from the grounds, Red leapt into the air and disappeared into the woods beyond. Gunter smiled cunningly while waving, his little body shivered in excitement. His thirst for knowledge is scary.

“Let’s go. I can’t wait to learn more about this world!”

Lilith nodded briefly in silence. TO her, the night has never been the same again.

There, few thousands of miles away from Azure, stood a sky-high building of mammoth size. Countless dark glass windows adorned the five cylindrical structures which made up the entire metropolis, and all were connected by bridges meant for transportation using Machina. White-cloaked sentinels can be seen moving in and out of every infrastructure, and there were even large Machina vehicles meant for warfare maneuvering around the area. This is the capital city of the Humans, the impregnable Empire’s metropolis, Xenon.

“Y-your majesty, w-we have f-f-f-failed to capture the young Mu user, ‘A-azure’. The K-kurts helped them in their e-e-escape. “

A sentinel crouched low in guilt as he reports the news to his king. Schwartz Geiger VI, the reigning king of the Humans, rested the side of his face on the back of his knuckles as he crossed his leg over another. The ruler, unlike the usual kings who wore red silk and crowns, dons a tight-fitting glossy black robe and pants, both made of materials unknown to the other races of the world. He wore several rings on his bony fingers, each with a huge precious stone engraved upon. His malignant brown eyes stared at his subject in extreme rage.

“First it was that useless Sowell, and then it was the guards at Vanadium… … “

King Schwartz squeezes his lightly blonde eyebrows in dismay. He raised his other hand holding a bronze grail, and hurled it against the sentinel. The latter dared not budge from the incoming attack, for doing so would meant defying the king’s will. The red wine within the grail splattered all over his white uniform, before the container itself dropped onto the floor and followed by a roll.

“Useless, drag him out for capital punishment.”

King Schwartz said with an eerie calmness while the sentinel was being dragged away. After the latter’s final screams ended in vain, the king closed his eyes and grinned ominously before speaking to the air in front of him.

“Commander Weiss, since it took the sentinels such a pain to capture those rats, I believe it’s time you make your move. Although the Kurts helped them to escape, I expect no leniency from you.”

“As you wish your majesty.”

One of the three knights of the Empire stood out from the rest and bowed low behind the throne his king sat. Similar to the sentinels, he wore a white robe-liked uniform. But unlike his subordinates, there were extra lavishing decorations pinned upon it to express his rankings.

”What about that wretched girl?”

”Princess Iris was said to be seen appearing at the Land of the Giants.”

“Very well, catch her back before she does anything stupid.”

“This is… this is… amazing…”

Apparently Kazo was so moved by the spectacular sight that his tears were flowing free from his eyes. Azure could not find any word to calm him down, while Lilith hit her brother on his head so as to bring him back to reality. The Giants are human-liked, with nothing special in particular except for their gigantic size and thus, huge strength. They were a tanned race, with dark brown as their dominant skin color. Bronze armors protect their body, and bone helms guard their head.

“Brother! You are a disgrace!!”

“Yes Kazo, this is merely the Land of the Giants, nothing to be special about.”

Gunter said matter-of-factly while trying to hide his excitement of seeing the civilizations for the first time. The Land of the Giants is a large piece of terrain occupied by the largest race on Mesopia, literally. Locating at only a few miles away from the Temple of Bahaaj, this non-human territory welcomes all but the humans. Gunter has had a hard time trying to explain Lilith’s and Azure’s status.

“We should be safe in this place for sometime. I will talk to the Elder regarding some issues, while Azure, you and Lilith will pay Master Gola a visit to learn how to properly use your Mu.”

”But I already know how to use mine!”

Lilith protested.

“You are just an amateur. Now, go on.”

Words coming from Gunter’s mouth are not always very convincing. Especially at this place, his stature was like an ant amongst the lot of Giants. Any careless act could get him squashed by one unwittingly. Although he does not hate this place, it seems that he does not like it very much either.

“Lilith, let’s go then.”

Azure tried to save the situation by a meaningless sentence.

“Oh phooey!”

Lilith pouted her lips and grabbed Azure’s hands to pull him away, trying her best not to look at the person beside her.

”Err… what about me?” Kazo asked childishly, “Can I go with handsome boy?”

Gunter eyed him fiercely with a killer stare.

“Kazo, go kill your time with food at the marketplace.”

A/N

Err, i guess i forgot to explain in the story itself. The Temple is located within the territories of the Giants, but other than that, all other lands belonged to the Humans through conquering. so, will the humans leave the Giants' lands alone? well... Nope =P

As usual, apart from the grammar (which i know i will take years to master), there will be mistakes...Ah, never mind that now. As revealed, Kurts are not blood-suckers lol, and actually they can resist the sun if they train themselves well enough.
