“U-ugh…”
Greeting his rebirth was a voice alien to him.
“Are you alive? Goodness, you looked so bloodless just now that I thought today’s meal was a raw human!”
He awakened in a pool of water which seemed to be from his own clothes. As he gave his eyes a rub, the image of the person who spoke to him became vivid. It was a stout man of age twenty something, with a very honest cut for his dark hair plus a muscular and tanned built. The clothes he wore are simple and tattered, but the strange thing about him was the pointed ears of his.
“You are… not normal?”
“Hey! That’s very rude you know? Although we are indeed Juhnas, you should have introduced yourself first, you strange Human!”
(***Juhna [Ju-NAH] is a race who respects nature, long-lived and looked like humans except for their long pointy ears. Some were renowned Mu users.***)
The younger man noticed the emphasis placed in the last word, and quickly apologized.
“Nah, I forgot what you said just now, take it easy, ya? Anyway, name’s Kazo.”
“I-i... don’t remember mine… … ”
The teen lowered his face for a second before scratching his head hard for his own name. But in his mind, there seemed to be nothing left of his former memories. He could not remember his name, where he came from, or even what exactly he was due to being in the same cabin with so many pointy-ears. Watching the newcomer’s anguish, Kazo quickly came up with a solution. As he examined the young man’s features and the accessories he wore, more and more others surrounded them in amusement. As Kazo discussed seriously with his mates, a conclusion was reached after quite some time.
“Since you are the youngest amongst us, we shall name you!! Alright, from today onwards, your name will be… Azure!!”
“A…zure?”
“Yes! You know, you are really queer. Bluish-green hair, pure white robe and weird accessories all over your body~! While you are still asleep, my mates and I has been guessing your eye color. But sadly, none of us got it correct. Who would have thought that your eyes are mysteriously clear as the azure blue skies which we missed so much…”
“What do you mean?”
Azure is not very sure why the people would miss a sky. Perhaps he never will, unless he is of the same race as them? Seeing his confused face, Kazo gave a hearty laughter which carried a melancholy tone. Azure wished he had never asked.
“You really have no clue of where you are now, handsome boy? We are being sold as slaves to the Empire. We are now on board a slave ship bound towards the metropolis. Right now, you are our newest comrade.”
A slave ship? That sure was shocking news to him. Azure pondered even harder on the reason he is being sold as a slave. Perhaps his parents were criminals who has committed heinous crimes, or perhaps they are simply too poor to feed him. The more he thought, the greater was Kazo’s urge to burst out laughing.
“Ahhahaha! Don’t think so much, handsome boy! You don’t need a reason to be a slave!!”
As he speaks, he lowered his voice so that only Azure could hear.
“The Empire exploits people of the other races as their slaves as a symbol of power. With their high technology, capturing us is as easy as a sneeze. The things they did were inhuman!! Ah well, they ARE humans. But then, if only there are Mu users who would stand up for justice…We thought you might be special, but to be thrown here meant that you do not carry any Mu in you.”
The Empire, Humans, Juhnas and Mu. Azure swore that he could not catch up with Kazo’s explanation anymore. But one thing he can be certain of though, that from his new friend’s ramblings, it is clear that the Empire is a Human kingdom which tries to dominate over the other smaller races around the world.
“… and from your eye and hair color, you can’t really be a human too! So that makes you our comrade!!”
Kazo talked on and on for hours until he fell asleep finally with a loud snore. Azure leaned against the cold walls with his friends by his side. It was not on his own accord though, in fact, the cabin they were in was so cramped with slaves that the air was not flowing smoothly and one would have to sleep sitting upright. Many things ran through his empty mind, and it did not take him long before he closed his eyes out of boredom and tiredness.

“Did you see that star? A loner and yet, it sparkles ever so brightly that makes people want to come closer. It represents you…”
A girl about the same age as him pointed to a lone stellar glimmering in the night skies while tightening the grip on her fur cape. She head of cerulean hair flowing down her back like a linear river meandering at the ends, contrasting her white robes beautifully. The ivory earring her left ear adored was similar to his, and the threads decorating the accessory were dangling in the night breeze. He stole a quick glance at her, and saw her fair skin reflecting the silver rays of the moon.
“Then that star would have to be you, Anzu, Always seen hovering around the loner.”
Anzu snickered at his words. As always, she thought, he is not very skilled with words. Cold as ice and mysterious as their holy mountains, in her eyes, he is a person who would always distant himself from others. But that is what she liked about him.
“Let’s go!”
She grabbed him by his wrists, leaving him embarrassed and surprised at the same time, and ran across the grasslands they were standing at.

“Anzu?”
”Hey Azure, wake up!! And who’s Anzu anyway?”
“Huh?”
Azure forced his eyes open once more to get out of his dreams. Even though Kazo, now in front of him, mentioned that it was still midnight, he could see no moonlight, for the cabin they were in was enclosed and almost air-tight. The woman by the name of Anzu whom appeared in his dream… was she somebody he knew in the past?
As he pondered, the door at the rear of the cabin flung open, hitting a few Juhnas hard on their backs. The lightings from the outside shone in and pierced the slaves’ eyes, stinging them in searing pain.
“Argh…”
“Get going, slaves!”
Sentries clad in white tight-fitting uniforms shouted imposingly with thick ropes held in their hands --- Ropes which will deprive them of their freedom. One by one, the Juhnas, then followed by Kazo and Azure, were bring tied round their wrists and forced to get out of their cabin.
