Chapter 34

Leaving Home

”Princess Iris has returned to the Human territories’ capital, Xenon, on her own accord in accompaniment by their commander Damask von Weiss.”

As a well-covered Red explained to Azure and the others who were still traumatized by the tragedy, she purposely hid the fact that Damask is her long lost brother. Perhaps, she thought, she had wanted Azure and the others to fight him without holding back. A war is about to start, and the crossing of their blades will not be too far from now.

Scarlet has been living in agony, and his sister understood it.

“May our paths never cross again, Kurt woman, “He told her before taking off, “but if we did, I will be glad to die by the hands of a dignified warrior like you.”

It does not matter when he will call her his sister again, for she knew, that she has found her last blood-related kin at last.

A warm breeze blew across the kismet-forsaken lands, carrying to the people a stench of dried-up blood. Under this hot weather, it will not take too long before the decomposition of the dead leads to the onslaught of a deadly epidemic. With majority of Tartan’s water wells destroyed, famine will soon strike too --- Though unwilling, the Tartans must abandon their homeland.

King Alliduddin reunited with his wife and daughter, and with them by his side, he stood up once again to face his people who now gathered by the ruins of the palace.

”My people,” he started, “A few hours ago, many of us were still ignorantly living our lives in peace. But now, what used to be our bliss was now taken.”

He paused awhile before continuing. Azure, Lilith and Red watched on from behind in silence. That person standing in front of them was truly a King of the highest dignity.

“Tartan has now faced a similar fate as the Night Kingdom. This desert is no more our home…” King Alliduddin closed his eyes to prevent a tear from falling, “We will leave this place in search of a new haven, but promise this very land, that we will not forget the blessings it has given us. Born of the sand are we, and die by the sand in our hearts.”

He closed his eyes and lowered his head as if bowing towards the horizons beyond. The remaining thousand odd of Tartans did not clap or cheer, but gave a weak smile which told of the pain of losing their families and homes. As the morning breeze sang the dirge of this crude summer, a final prayer for the dead then commences.

One by one, each and every Tartan carried a seed of a certain crop and held it near to their hearts. With their hands holding it tight, they mourned and sang the song for the dead:

“Lights of the town
As lives of the people extinguishes,
We sang today for a pavement of your paths.
Clear away the uncertainty and point to the next junction.
Doubting no more, go ahead without turning back.
We, as the children of Anu,
Blessed by the Sun and Moon,
Pray that the souls will enter the gates of rebirth.

O Seedlings from the earth,
Return to where you belong...”

The melody was similar, if not the same as the Madain Seri, but the lyrics were a little different. As Azure listened, the Tartans let go of the seeds in their hands and allowed them to embed themselves onto the crimson earth. ‘With every extinguished life comes another in a new form’… A strange philosophy came to Azure’s mind all of a sudden, and to his surprise, it belonged to part of his lost memories.

The Circle of Life, recycling of vessel-less souls…

”Let us join hands. “

A child-liked voice interrupted from above and everyone looked up to find out what could have spoken in the skies. To their horror, as well as the King’s, it was a human Machinan slave ship of a huge size. Resembling a dragon clad in silver armor, her name is Tiamat.

“Your majesty, they are our friends from the Juhnan village of Ruthern Woods,” Azure explained, “In fact, Lilith and I came to these lands to persuade you to join forces with us.”

With the ambassadors’ purpose finally explained, it was time the Tartans embark on a new life, with the aid from their friends of other races whom they chose to isolate themselves from for the past decades. For their journey, they carried nothing with them, not even clothes or food, for they had none left.

”You beast! What have you done to the Tartans!!”

Behind a gigantic cell sat Elder Kongi and his fellow kinsman Gola, the Mu-using coliseum keeper from the Land of the Giants. Both of them were the last of the few Mu users who survived the inhuman drawing of energy to charge up the Apocalypse. Schwartz, the leader of the humans, deliberately visited them to show them his success of the firing.

“Tartan is no more. Let’s see… the death toll is now beyond thirty grand… All killed by your treasured Mu!!”

His words came directly and fast like a lightning, striking the two Giants and leaving them in extreme rage.

“You…. YOU……”

Unable to withhold his anger anymore, Gola banged his large fists against the special titanium bars which are strong enough to withstand even cannon blows. In the eyes of others, the scene resembled a man taunting two miserable beasts who were unable to reach him due to the imprisonment. Gola knew the Elder and him will only hasten their deaths if they waste anymore of their drained stamina, but he no longer cared about his predicament.

”Gola, calm down.”

Elder Kongi’s weak voice sounded as he places his hands on his disciple’s. The latter realized his folly and broke into tears as big as a clenched fist of a Human.

“I’m sorry… Elder…. I’m sorry… everyone…”

No matter how much he apologized, the two Giants knew, the fact that Tartan was destroyed by their own Mu could no longer be altered. Dying is the choice of a coward, and thus, they vowed to survive and seek respite and forgiveness from King Alliduddin personally.

“My lord,” a sentinel donning the usual white uniform greeted his king while the latter was enjoying the scene, “Sorry to interrupt your amusement, but Princess Iris and Commander Von Weiss have returned using our teleporting network.”

“Good, “Schwartz Geiger smirked, “I can finally have an answer on the Mu interruptions we experienced during the firing.”
