Chapter 35

The Day They Met

“Dog of the Empire!”

“You have shamed us, Scarlet!!”

“We will not thank you for this!”

Angry insults were being thrown to him by his fellow caged kinsmen like poisonous arrows. Their remarks pierced right through his heart. But it cannot be helped, for he has just sold himself to serve under Schwartz Geiger VI, the leader of the Humans.

“I will help you capture the other races, so please, spare our lives.”

That was what the contract was all about: He will help the Empire in exchange for his friends’ lives, and for achieving his goal. Upon swearing his fealty, he knew he can no longer escape the life of being a traitor. But he had to plan for a long term goal, not as an energy source of the Empire like what his initial purpose here was, but for a greater purpose.

“Survive by any means,” as his mother told him before being executed, “and give the Humans a greater revenge.”

Now he just hopes that his sister had escaped capture successfully.

The blood flowing within him will be routinely changed every six months to suppress his in-born lycanthropy effect, and the traits of him being a Kurt were surgically removed. With the technologies of the Empire, Scarlet von Weiss, the Duke of the Night kingdom, has disappeared from Mesopia.

“My bodyguard? I don’t need a bodyguard!”

Iris snarled at Damask on his first duty as a newly-appointed captain.

”I will be guarding you wherever you go, whether you want it or not.”

”Fine!”

The princess started to sprint along the confusing corridors, trying hard to shake him off, but Damask merely followed effortlessly behind without breaking a sweat. Truly enough, all places except the bathroom will be guarded by the irritating captain. The two sixteen year-olds insisted on their stand for a long moment before the Princess finally gave in.

“You win, so what price do you want? A higher rank?”

Iris’ tone carried a little sarcasm. She has heard from others that Damask was a shady person who would betray just anyone except her father to attain his goals, and thus, she has hated him even before today. To be very gullible to rumors, Damask thought, was exactly what the others have told him of the princess as well.

“This is not a competition, so Lady Iris, just stay obedient.”

It took Damask six years to climb to his current position, and he will not let the ridiculous job hold him down. By the way, it was also the first time he has been this close to her, for she was like a greenhouse flora heavily protected by her father.

And as days grew, he began to notice a few small pet peeves the princess possessed: She had a tendency to squeeze her eyebrows and pout her lips whenever her mischief was busted; she eats steak with all five fingers clutching the knife as if stabbing the poor piece of meat; and the most surprising thing about her were her great interests and talent in Mesopia’s history, geomancy and ancient linguistics.

Usually that would not be intriguing as everyone would bound to have his or her own favorite subjects to study, but in the Human regions, all these subjects were banned by law to learn.

Ironically, that was also the catalyst between the two. Once a Kurt, Damask was able to secretly teach her in things she wanted very much to know. But the more history he reveals, the more difficult it is to hide his past from her.

************************************************************************************

“Tell me, Damask, who are you?” Iris asked one day as her suspicions grew to huge proportions and finally to saturation. She stood at the balcony of her room located high up the Metropolis’ building, enjoying the night breeze which kept her violet polyester dress constantly stirred.

“I am who I am, milady” Damask answered coolly from behind while keeping his eyes closed to prevent being mesmerized by the brunette’s long mane.

“You’re lying.”

The princess turned around to look at him directly.

She is on the verge of tears, and that was what he dislikes the most. Her tears are able to weaken him like a powerful spell which comes with a simple incantation…

“I told you so much, even the secret of me being a half-Tartan. So tell me yours, please?”

Captain Damask, a commander soon-to-be, was defeated by the lady he served --- He has finally given in. Sometimes he would wonder why he could talk so freely in front of the lady with so much trust. Perhaps she was born to rebel and tame others, he thought helplessly as he divulged about his identity.

”My name is… Scarlet.”

************************************************************************************

“Born to rebel, you say? I think I sure am,” Iris broke the silence as both of them made their way back to the capital of the Humans on an automobile. The trip from Tartan has been draining, but they must not slow down, for they had important things to do. Although the tragedy has already happened, and many were killed, there must be something they can do to prevent further bloodshed.

“I wonder if Red has deciphered the meaning of the scroll I got from the Temple?”

Iris appeared uneasy and panicky while Damask stays the same.

”They will be alright,” he assures her, “as long as they stay together.”

“O…What about me?”

Well…

”You will too, as long as you stay by your bodyguard’s side,” Damask peers towards the afar to hide his embarrassment while Iris obediently rests her head by his shoulders.

“Scarlet, I’m glad that you are a Kurt, and I’m glad that I am not fully a Human too. In this way, we will be able to be together once all these were over.”

“Yeah.”

“Sorry for leaving you behind then to investigate the ancient clues and Lilith.”

“I understand.”

“But after tonight, I won’t leave you again.”

Iris touched the side of his lips with hers suddenly, leaving him in a momentary surprise. But as the automobile enters the gated pass of the metropolis, Iris and Damask kept their distance again. A distance a princess and her guard must keep.

It is time for Scarlet to carry out the plan he has harbored for so long.
