Chapter 36

Sacrificed

“Lady Maya, the last five hundred Tartan refugees has been safely sent to the land of the Aqualungs,” Gunter reported to his Elder.

As the pilot of Tiamat, he has no qualms in obtaining the fuel, which was kindly provided by the Elders’ little bit of Mu. Ever since their exodus, the Tartans have been separated all over the continent. While most of them were here in Ruthern Woods, some were being sent to the Aqualungs and Gorgon’s territory.

”You’ve worked hard, Gunter,” Lady Maya smiled. Somehow, it felt as if her closed eyes were smiling too.

“Is Lilith…?”

“Yes, she is now facing her destiny.”

It was the night when she was in labor, and the whole capital of Humans, Xenon, cheered for the arrival of the first princess. Her husband, Schwartz Geiger VI, was a brilliant military strategist who rose to leadership position using his wits and cunning. He has encouraged the research into Machinas to flourish, for the Humans needed something which can replace Mu to fight the other races.

But behind his brilliance hid his cruel ambitions which were not known by the people until some years later.

The delivery of the princess that night was difficult, due to the premature birth which was two months earlier than expected. But the Queen held on, for she wanted the child very badly.

Once the endurance is over, the first cry of the princess could be heard throughout the central of the city where the bastion is.

“She is pretty, your majesty. Do you have a name in mind for her?”

The midwife handed the small and fragile baby to her mother, who then nestled her with utmost care.

”Yes, “the queen placed her index finger onto the little princess’ cheek and caressed her gently, “She will be named Iris.”

Just then, a sudden contraction in her stomach caused her to almost drop her baby.

“Ugh…!”

The queen’s brows squeezed together tightly and clutched her lower abdomen while handling her daughter to the maids.

“There is… …”

Twins?! The midwife shrieked frantically and checked the situation within the queen. Indeed, there was another princess within her womb.

“Carry on the effort you used just now, your majesty!”

The experienced midwife urged the queen on, and the entire queen’s chamber got into another panic mode as they prepared for another baby’s arrival.

After a few hours, the second princess was finally being delivered. Although she had the same looks as her sister, there was something different --- Her lungs were not drawing in air and her skin was slightly purplish. No matter how hard the midwife tried, her first cry of life was never sounded.

“Y-your majesty… the second princess is…

The midwife dared not speak of the word.

The queen widened her mouth and spoke nothing.

In nights like this, her brimming tears felt warmer than her heart.

”…Stillborn…”

“No…”

“She was being strangled by her own umbilical cord…”

“No… Please… Let her live… Please…”

As the queen sobbed with her heart broken, she murmured something inaudible to others except the midwife.

“Is this the punishment of the gods…? The punishment of me forsaking my Tartan people and my faith…? … Please let my girl live……………… please… I am willing to give up my live in exchange for hers…”

She cuddled her second child in her chest and prayed wholeheartedly for an impossible miracle.

“Even if it means my life…”

”Y-your majesty, look!”

The midwife’s shouts woke up the queen from her state of trance. As she looked at her motionless child, something strange is happening to the corpse. A very faint white glow is now surrounding the baby like a warm blanket.

That was the very night when the second princess’ fate was sealed forever. She returned to life, but carried with her revival a heavy burden which could not bring her close to her parents.

“Thus, eighteen years ago, the second princess was sacrificed for the sake of the world,”Red concluded her recount of what Iris told her with a silent sigh.

Surprised at her lineage, Azure turned to look at Lilith, who too spoke nothing and covered her mouth in anguish. King Alliduddin, too, merely looked to the other side of the wooden lodge. The air was still in the lodge they were in, so still that it was suffocating to even breathe silently.

So, her father is the one causing so much pain to the entire world, Lilith thought painfully, the one who killed a hundred thousand odd of Tartans in a night. She has been expecting her background to be less extravagant. Not a princess from the treacherous Empire, not a baby abandoned in the woods… Maybe a daughter of a Human merchant who sold his daughter away due to poverty? She had always wanted it to be this way. Before hearing from Red, she has had the chance to reject, but she chose to listen.

Azure is by her side now, and she had wished that he would sit a little closer to her. Just a little closer and her heart might gain a little more comfort. He did not, but that is okay with her, for she has to put in more effort to make him notice her more.

The same rule applies to the reality she is going to face. Nothing is going to change, unless she puts in the effort.

“I am only a tiny being in this vast world,” Her calm voice pierces through the still atmosphere so that the others looked at her attentively, “and my birth is just a process to allow me to be here.”

”Lilith…” King Alliduddin wanted to say something, but held himself back to allow her to continue.

“It’s just ‘now’ and ‘future’, am I right, Uncle?”

The Tartan King smiled. He was glad that his second niece was as marvelous as the first.
