“Do you think that your Mu can escape our detection, Scarlet?”

Right before Schwartz ended his sentence, a dozen melee sentinels began to surround Damask and Iris, entrapping them within a circle. Iris’ father smirked in a chilly tone, beneath which lies a strong killing intent. Dr Lancelot has retreated backwards with Apocalypse’s blueprint to stay out of the turmoil.

“Father, there is still time for an agreement to be forged with the Juhnas!” Iris pleaded desperately. In her heart, she has always regarded him as her father even though he has never shown her any care and concern. She does not want him to plunge deeper into darkness.

“The great war must never be started, for we will awaken something far worse than our imagination!”

“Silence, Iris. Based on your conduct, I no longer consider you to be of my bloodline, but a conspirator in a revolt against the Humans.”

Just what has been turning Schwartz into a leader with a heart ambitious enough to want the entire world at his feet? Damask questioned himself but could find no answer. It has been said that Schwartz used to be a humble mercenary soldier for the Empire who rose to kingship with his cunningness.

“Don’t you… love mother at all…?”

Iris fell to her knees and forced herself to face the reality. She has long realized that the union between her parents was only part of a scheme by her father for the world to be angry at the Humans, but she did not want to acknowledge it, until...

“No.”

Schwartz’s answer came as a cruel confirmation. As the heart-ripping sensation overwhelms her, Damask stood up in front of her to act as a shield.

“You don’t deserve to be her father!”

The sentinels surrounding them then pierced their Machinan blades towards the two infidels. For a moment, all the others could see were the executors forming a tight cordon around the captives. And then, a blinding red light finds it way through the gaps in between them, leading to a burst of energy which blasts them away. The explosion was of a Mu origin, and it belonged to Damask.

Making use of the momentary distraction, he materialized a small bit of energy beneath his feet to propel him forward towards Lancelot. Facing an enemy who once held the rank of a commander in the Empire, the scientist had no chance but to surrender the blueprint to him.

More armed soldiers entered and made their way through the rubble. The time left for their escape has been ticking away fast. Damask picked up Iris into his arms and with his crushing Mu trained up well by the Empire; they easily made way through the resistance and soon find themselves in the disembarking terminal for giant Machinas which must be manually operated.

“Scarlet, we can use one of these!” Iris suggested.

Heeding her advice, Damask carried her and jumped into one of the Machinas’ hatch while the sentinels were only a few meters away behind them.

“Alright…”

A button was pressed, followed by stepping onto a pedal; the Machina obeyed Damask’s commands and stirred from its resting position. The mobile weapon then lost its balance due to the continuous firing by the armed forces’ firepower. But with a clever swipe from its arms, the Machina managed to knock them unconscious.

Their escape has just begun in a night still young.

“Lilith, it’s time for dinner.”

Azure strolled towards a nearby tree in the quiet woods and spotted the young lady sitting alone on one of the thick branch. Whilst back-facing him, she looked at the lonely moon partially hidden behind the leaves.

“Lilith…?”

There was silence for a moment, and Azure thought she had not hear him until ---

“Azure, are you able to come up here and join me?”

She turned around and fell her eyes upon the him. Her appearances were no longer like before, somehow, she appeared to be more matured-looking than she used to be. Is that the result of having witnessed the prelude to war?

“… I’m not sure… but alright, here goes.”

Azure backtracked a little, drew a deep breath, and sprang towards the lowest branch of the tree. He leapt a few times consecutively and skillfully before reaching the branch Lilith is on. Although it was not the first time she has seen Azure so nimble-footed, he has never failed to cause her mind to be overwhelmed with questions.

“Azure,” she asked as he sat down beside her, “Who are you?”

#####

The question surprised him a little, but he soon realized from her expressions that she really wanted to know the truth.

“Now that you know who I am, I want to know more about you,” Lilith’s smile had a meaning far deeper than he has imagined.

Azure was reluctant at first; after all, he has intended to hide it from everyone else. But someday, the truth will have to be spilled.

“I guess… you have felt the difference. During the time when I was in a coma, I had a dream, remember? I dreamt about my past…”

“About Anzu?”

Her question caused another stop in his revelation.

“Yes, I recalled about how we first met. Apparently she is the priestess of the gods, and I am a notorious thief. And we were both people from a lesser developed human civilisation.”

So that was why he was able to sprint without a sound, Lilith considered. If he was a thief, he must have been a charismatic one. To have both Anzu and her drawn to him like this…

“When we first met, I found her in a huge box I looted from the temple, the same Temple of Bahaaj we went two months ago. She didn’t escape and expose my identity, instead, she stayed around. Sometimes she would play silly tricks on me, but other times, she…”

Holding one of his knees close to him, Azure rambled on and on with unknowingly a smile on his face. Admiring a beautiful creature like him under the moonlight, with his azure hair shimmering faintly and his ear ring tingling in the wind, Lilith’s heart only wrenched harder. If he was telling another person about her, would he give the same expression as he had given her now?

She could not help but feel her jealousy pile up against another girl who only appeared in Azure’s dreams. It is foolish, but agonizing at the same time. She hated herself for being so insensible.

“And then she…”

“Azure.”

She interrupted his speech.

“I have asked my uncle about it,” and then she finally plucked up her courage to begin, “and it seems that my eighteenth birthday was two days ago. The day when we returned from Tartan. ”

Azure’s eyes widened in surprise and for a moment he could not find anything to say. Getting tongue-tied is disrespectful in this kind of situation, but it was at least better than the answer he is going to give.

“Oh… I um… didn’t prepare anything for you…” Azure admitted and gazed at the trees next to him, “I’m sorry.”

He looked down at his feet in guilt. Lilith knew that would be his answer, for he is a dead honest person. Smiling heartily, she began the words she has always wanted to tell him.

“No, there is something I want, and you had it.”

“I do?”

“Yes…” Lilith’s heart rioted for a moment. Her stomach churned and a flow of heat rushed up to her cheeks, but Azure did not notice it under the shades of the night. She closed her eyes for a moment, drew a deep breath, and grabbed the tree bark she was sitting on. All she wants is him.

“?”

“Don’t you dare run, Azure.”

Run? Azure’s mind went blank for a moment. Is she going to do something dangero---

And then she imposed her face onto his. Without warning, silently, gently…

At the precise moment when their lips felt something, Lilith closed her eyes instinctively and Azure could smell her faint scent of lily. A light aroma, but lingering and sweet-smelling nonetheless. By having his eyes wide open like this, she was even closer than he had ever imagined. Her long lashes beneath her trembling eyelids; quiet breathings cooling his cheeks; and sound from their lips unable to mask their thumping hearts.

Somehow, he felt nostalgic.
