Chapter 4

Holy Symbol

Tears overwhelmed his eyes as he tried to close them desperately. His jaws locked tight and his teeth clattered with sorrow and fear. Two of his newly found friends, Baldo and Yorka fell, all because of his reluctance to accept his own fate.

“Azure, forget it. It’s better to die this way rather than when my life force is being used up. Such is the way of a Juhna warrior!”

Kazo made up his mind to accept his fate and closed his eyes to await the moment. The executioner took his aim at the best spot to lower his lance, and got ready to give his target a brutal thrust into his heart.

”…no…”

The sentinel raised his arms and focused, ignoring a lone teen’s pleas and shouts. The crowds present at the slave market cheered on as if it was a joyous occasion to celebrate Human’s triumph.

“There is no way …”

Azure shivered and felt nauseous, as if something gigantic within him was about to be spilled out. His mind is in turmoil. A voice resonated in him, and would not go away.

But what can he do? There is nothing he can do.

Unleash the gift that I have bestowed.

Gift? His faded memories knew not of what gift was being given to him.

Then, the sound of a blade cutting through the wind could be heard. But before it found its target, it was stopped in the midair by a freed arm---

”AZURE!!”

To Kazo’s surprise and horror, Azure has mysteriously gotten free from his restrains. Violent winds were revolving around him like deadly cutters, sending his long robes and hair battering in the erratic flow. As he closed his eyes, he began to glow in a faint but visible aura of light. Rhodium’s citizens screamed and ran for their lives as Captain Sowell hid cowardly behind his sentinels who became his shields.

“M-MU?!!”

Sowell’s voice trembled in fear. Although he has heard of what a Mu user could do, he has never seen an actual one in action.

“… …”

A large, glowing blue circle weaved into shape by numerous undecipherable symbols which seemed to be from an ancient tongue appeared below Azure’s feet. His sapphire pupils became a slit like that of a fierce serpent’s when he opened them once more. He held up his right hand so that it is perpendicular to his body, and folded his last three fingers. As his points his index finger towards a hidden Sowell, the light surrounding him gathered behind his back to form a vague avian figure with huge wings.

“Punish him.”

The figure soared away from its conjurer, while still maintaining a link in between them, and charged towards the small group of sentinels running away in front. The path it traveled cracked into deep fissures, and the obstructions it encountered were being swallowed into oblivion, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Although some braver ones stayed behind to shoot the Mu with their Machinas, the time they managed to buy for their captain was not enough.

It did not take the Mu long to reach its target. With the sentinels sacrificed for his sake, Captain Sowell knelt onto the floor and cried like a coward.

“…p-p-please… spare my… life”

But Azure pretended not to hear what he said and sent his Mu towards Sowell. And within the next moment, the latter was no more.

“Did you spare my friends’…?”

The brilliant creature gave a high-pitched screech before dissipating into the air, and Azure was exhausted. Although the other Juhnas are too frightened to come any closer to the monster, Kazo fled to his friend’s side immediately to grab hold of him before he fell.

“Azure!! Didn’t tell me you’re a Mu user?! But oh my goodness, that was awesome!!”

“….what did I do…?”

“Hey Azure… HEY!!”

Azure could no longer hear what Kazo was trying to shout into his ears. His body felt so drained all of a sudden that his grip was loosened and he collapsed. Before he completely lost his consciousness, he could faintly feel another presence lingering and talking within him.

A blinding white light enveloped his consciousness all of a sudden. When he opened his eyes once more, he saw himself standing in an endless stretch of grasslands with spring blooming colorfully all around. Behind him were grand ice-capped mountains undulating like a bluish-white serpent with icy fangs and the breeze which blew across the place felt slightly chilly.

As he gazed at a precipice not too far away, the same girl who appeared in his dreams the other day was standing there, enjoying the caress from the winds.

“A-Anzu?”

The girl turned her head around, her hair swept across her cheeks before swerving to the back, and she grinned like a contented child.

“So, you finally remembered me?”

“… You told me your name the last time we met.”

His abrupt answer brought a certain degree of shock to her expressions. Her smiles disappeared, and she pouted her lips in dismay. With her knuckles resting on her hips, she back-faced Azure and hollered,

“Hmph! So intelligent is your mind to forget me!”

“I---”

“Nevermind~” she concluded the dream with this sentence, “You shall go and find your memories back before calling my name again!”

“… What?!”

“What ‘what’?”

His azure eyes opened after a long while. All he could see was Kazo’s face almost plastering onto his, blocking out the afternoon sun as well as the other Juhnas watching him in admiration. He jolted up, giving his friends a fright. They were now a few hundred miles away from Rhodium City, and were back to where the slave ship was. Due to what Azure did a few while ago, there were no longer sentinels on board the humongous flying machina.

“Still haven’t answered me, Azure! How did you get past the Mu examination with negative results?! Look at your powers, they are awesome!! I can betcha my elders couldn’t pull off something as neat as that one!”

The enthusiastic Juhna went on and on while hitting his back hard, but Azure could only think about his dreams on the mysterious girl. Something tells him that she was the important key to unlocking his memories, and thus, he will seek her out.

”I… don’t know either.”

”Handsome boy, don’t look so sulky or your face will become a floor-mopping Machina soon!”

He tried to put his hands onto his friend’s shoulders, but was rejected by the latter forcefully.

“What’s wrong Azure? You should be happy, you saved us all! And because of you we’re free! You know what; all of us here think we are owing to you a big one! Where will you go from now on?”

The question made the teenager sulk even lower.

“I… have no place to go. No memories to recall, no person to ever call me by my real name…”

Hearing that, Kazo stretched out his hands one more time. The grin on his face was so wide, that Azure could see almost all of his slightly unpolished teeth.

”Come to our village then! We can use this ship to get there!! To us, you will always be Azure, the weird boy who saved the Juhna race!”

“I---“

“Okay you’ve agreed! Let’s go!!”

“What ?!”
