Chapter 40

Mixed Feelings

“By the blessings from the gods, may our alliance stay strong as the mountains, unwavering as the seas and long-lasting as eternity.”

At this day, a week before the commencement of war against the humans, the Elders from the five races prayed to the heavens as they forge a bond with each other. The crowds surrounding them made no other noises, but just watch the ceremony in silence. Many knew that this alliance will not be a strong one, but it was the last effort to defend them.

The feelings of the people were being divided. Some supported the rebellions, while the others were reluctant to let their family or friends go on the war --- They knew that most of them will never come back alive again. They will have to die in the end, reluctant or no. It is only the matter of time which made half the population so unwilling.

At least, let them be with their loved ones for a longer time.

Standing by the people’s side, Azure understood their dilemma and agony. He empathizes with them, but what else can he do to help?

“Not only will many from this alliance be sacrificed, but the Human’s side as well,” he thought in anguish.

A war can never do any good. He understands it thoroughly, but could not stop it from happening. A warning from a thousand-years-old letter from the past could not alleviate the tension accumulated for as long.

Lilith then takes hold of his hand gently as the ceremony ended and the others have begun to leave for their homes separately. He blushed slightly, but accepts her contact in the end. After that faithful night, the relationship between the two of them was changed forever. He has yet to give her a reply, and is not the appropriate time to do so either.

“Everything will end when Gunter cracks the mystery behind the Apocalypse’s design with the help from Iris.

She broke the silence by initiating a conversation. Kazo wanted to stay behind and join them, but was pulled away by Gunter and Red forcefully.

“Yeah.”

Will everything really end then? Azure had hoped, and wanted it to be so. There is turmoil in his head, and his heart’s unrest came from the letter Iris brought back from the Temple.

“Ishtar will awaken and destroy everything.”

That was what the message was trying to say. If it is true…

“Sometimes I would wonder… Am I the vessel the letter said? I was supposed to be only an empty vessel born without life, and yet a Mu possessed me all of a sudden to give me one. Lady Maya has said that Mu usually possess individual before even they were being born, so how did I…”

Lilith’s sudden thoughts shocked him.

“Rest assured that it won’t be you.”

“And the reason behind your definite answer?”

Azure was silenced for a moment. The unusual still air surrounding them came back when they were the only ones left, making the two of them blush madly.

“… I don’t have one. Just felt that it should be this way.”

Azure smiled weakly before turning his head away to leave. He wished he could have talked more with her, but his heart would ache whenever he sees her sorrowful expression.

And Lilith understood his plight --- There is still Anzu to worry about. Nonetheless, she has finally conveyed her feelings, so all that is left…is her unrequited love. Azure walked a few heavy steps away from her, before turning back awkwardly again.

“You will not be the vessel, I believe you won’t be. And anyway… …”

He turned his back against her once again.

“After I have regained my memory, my past, and sorted out everything, I will give you a proper …answer.”

Following his sentence, Azure ran as fast as he could to get away from the embarrassing situation. Lilith smiled, and to an extent a tear dropped from her lowered eyes, as she clutches her hands close to her heart.

“I don’t need an answer, silly…”

Azure has tied the knots with Anzu, that fact alone will never be changed. The war will be starting, and they will no longer be as carefree as before. Feelings aside, soon it would be time to defend and retrieve back what they have lost. Regarding the other issue which Lilith was very concerned and worried about… It pains her to think about the question.

“If I am Ishtar, will you kill me with your own hands?”

One week later---

Situated at the extreme south of the Metropolis is a piece of barren lands known for its harshness. It is a place where no crops will grow, and its lakes yield no life forms. Inhabitants here eat carcasses of animals and drink their blood to stay alive. Hence, they have grown to become a ferocious race famous for their unique way of devouring their food. Named after their powerful lower jaws, the Grimjaws are all set to get back at the humans who oppressed them and the other races for so long.

“Everyone, the time has come!” Elder Gorgon hollered in front of his massive army of beasts. With a deep breath drew, one of them blew a 3m long horn made of hollow Elephunk’s tusks to signify the start of war.
