Chapter 47

In the Azure

Lilith wiped a tear which flowed down her cheek uncontrollably as she watched her sister leaving with her love. She will never see them again, but the bliss Iris is in which is evident in her smile warmed Lilith’s heart.

Although they have not been very close due to the separation at birth, somehow the twins’ hearts are connected.

“I knew she would leave us one day with Scarlet, but I didn’t even say a decent goodbye to her in the end…”

She said to Azure beside her, though he appeared to be in deep thinking.

“Don’t worry; your goodwill will reach them.”

Surprisingly, he answered her. But Lilith could tell that his expressions have changed.

”Azure…” she felt awkward all of a sudden, “What are you thinking about?”

Every gathering will have its end. So does every encounter and event. With the war ending, new lives will start soon. And he shall return to the past and stay as a history. He is afraid to tell her about his return, but felt obliged to do so.

“Come with me, I will take you to a place I recalled.”

For the very first time, Azure grabbed her hands on his own and the two started walking away from the village’s lights. Lilith felt a gush of heat rushing through her head, but enjoyed this sweet change in Azure at the same time.

Has he come to realize something… finally?

One final step he took on the swampy and dark forest created a small enchanted circle of blue identical to the one which appeared whenever he uses his Mu, but it was smaller this time.

“You still have Mu in you?!”

Azure never answered, but instead tightened his grip on Lilith’s palm. A light, feathery feeling ensured. And for a long moment, they felt as if they are disintegrating into particles.

Lilith felt dizzy, almost to the point of losing her consciousness.

The next moment she opened her eyes once more, she realized that both of them were at a whole new different place already. Have the woods changed its appearance… or have they teleported to a new place?

A familiar structure loomed in front of them like a monument, and it did not take long for her to recall the place.

“Temple of Bahaaj?!”

Azure nodded, and led her into the underground temple slowly. Despite the place being dark with little moonlight to illuminate its interior, Lilith could tell that Azure navigated the place with ease.

Suddenly, a particular step they took seemed to activate a certain hidden switch on the floorings. One by one, the torches hanging by the sides of the narrow passageway began to be lit up by a mysterious flint.

Illumination finally revealed the place. The same interior structure and the same ancient carvings on the dark-colored brick walls; even the musty air and moulds which thrived at dark corners… everything seemed to be untouched by time.

“Where are you bringing me to…?”

The suspense Lilith has been left in grew, and eventually reached its maximum when they reached the same altar where Azure was initially found --- The altar on a raised platform with five stone tablets forming a pentagon around it.

“Lilith,” he turned around and spoke suddenly, “I am returning to where I belonged.”

Returning? To where? Why?

“I don’t belong here. I come from the civilization four thousand years ago on a task to review this world. Now that the job is done, I must not stay here anymore…”

He was a thief, from a faraway time.

Despite that his hands are on Lilith’s shoulders now, he dared not look into her eyes.

She shook her head willfully. Her eyes are rimming with tears, and soon, they began to fall like rain from a saddened sky.

“I promised you that I would give you an answer after everything is over...” he continued with difficulty, “So here it is: ”

It took him some time to say his answer.

No, she does not want to hear it.

“Forget about me.”

Bit by bit, he let go of his grip on her shoulders, and backtracked slowly towards the room central.

Shining ancient symbols appeared under every step Azure took.

Chandeliers beside the altar burned even brighter, its flames eventually attaining a blue hue.

“No!”

Lilith sprang forward when Azure took his final step to reach the central and pulled his robes’ long sleeves instinctively. A strong pushing force generated by the ancient symbols tries to prevent her from coming any closer, but she held on.

“I don’t want this answer! I’ll treat it as if I’ve never heard it!!”

“But, Lilith…”

“I’m hearing nothing!!”

She let go of her grip and cupped her ears willfully.

“Listen to me!”

Azure shouted in a fit of anger, but all she did was close her eyes.

She does not want to hear his last words.

She does not want to see him leaving.

All sounds except her own short breathings can be heard as she completely shuts herself from the world. All she wants to hear was Azure saying that all he has just said was a lie.

But she knew it will be impossible. By closing her eyes and sinking into darkness, the reality only seems to become more evident.

The world does not matter anymore… so does Anzu. She does not want to fight with Anzu anymore…Nothing else mattered… …

Really…

Huh?

In her soundless and colorless world, something just stirred her other senses.

She sensed another steady breathing on her cheeks. It felt a little warm, as if the person was talking to her very closely.

Only half an inch away.

Her hands cupping on her ears were being superimposed forcefully with another pair bigger than hers.

She wanted to open her eyes, but she was afraid of seeing the cruel truth.

She was trembling.

The unheard voice speaking close to her face sounded as if he was telling her,

“Keep your eyes closed.”

She obliged.

Since things have turned out this way, he would rather her not seeing his leaving.

Then, just like her hands, a warm and assuring touch was imposed on her cheeks.

Sudden, but gentle at the same time…

Like how a dragonfly would dip momentarily on a pond’s surface, the sensation of his lips was so light that it was almost transient.

To her, he felt so far, yet their contact was ever so close.

He is leaving, and that is the ultimate ending.

Leaving… leaving her side, leaving her forever.

No… please don’t leave me.

“Azure!”

She opened her eyes all of a sudden, only to find the last symbol to lose its shine and return to the floorings.

The flames on the candles died down, and the air began to feel chilly.

No one else is there anymore, except her.

Everything felt like a lingering dream.

And thus he has left, without a sound, without a trace... forever.

************************************************************************************

It has been almost a year since the destruction of the Metropolis, yet the reconstruction of the city was going on at a speedy rate. Perhaps it was because of the help the other races rendered. By lending their Mus and manpower, the former alliance of five races has entered into a treaty agreement with the humans.

On the other hand, the Humans have slowly begun to teach the others the secrets of their technology. With schools being built especially for the other races, the mysteries of Machinas are revealed to the world.

All this is not possible without the careful planning and sensible approaches made by a good leader. When the Humans lost their king a year ago as he jumped to his death, his daughter surprisingly took his place as the guide for their future.

Being a half-human, she has the blood of one of the five tribes. This made her the perfect candidate as the leader of the new city in peace with the world.

Although she is young, her courage and intelligence has already surprised many people.

Loud trumpets and drums sounded today, followed by the roaring applause from the people at the bustling square of the human town. People of all races cheered as they followed the parade along.

It was their queen’s nineteenth birthday, and the world has called for a grand celebration. But despite their waiting at the square, there is still no sign of their leader.

“Lilith, it’s about to start.”

Red and Kazo urged her on to meet her well-wishers.

And there she was in her room, sitting stiffly in front of a mirror. A letter from her sister lay quietly at a corner of her table, which told of how Scarlet and she has tied the knot at a small but tranquil village.

If only Azure is with her now… Lilith thought wishfully as she gave her mirror image a nervous grin, she would have been able to share her joys with him.

The two adults beside her could tell her feelings straightaway, but could not do anything to help. Similar to a year ago when she came back alone from the Temple and cried all night after Azure’s disappearance, they cannot offer any help except some comfort.

“Alright,” she stood up finally, “Let’s go.”

Dressed in a simple but unique Juhna-styled dress lined with golden sequins, her short brunette tresses brought out a rather imposing aura not typical of a girl coming of age.

As she sauntered towards the platform prepared for her to make a speech, a flock of sparrows flew across the azure skies, as if wishing her a final farewell before making their way north.

“My people…”

Queen Lilith Geiger, also known as the Bringer of harmony, thus celebrates her first year of reigning over what was later being deemed as the Golden Age of the humans.
