Aruru asked curiously as she helped her lady to dress in her ritual garb, which consist of a round-collared white robe with golden sequins at the rims secured by a black silk band covered in words of prayer at the waist.
“The Almighty and the Benevolent have finally granted the Humans a gift which we never had before. And I am there as a witness.”
Anzu answered promptly, but within her own heart, she has wondered whether it was a good gift after all. After her circlet was placed securely on her well-brushed hair, her attendant began to work on the colors on her face.
“Isn’t that…. Earrings, Lady Anzu?”
She inquired in shock as she saw her mistress tug two pearl-white rings into her belt.
”Yes, these are made of Syan azurites, and they are my lucky charm.”
Anzu lowered her eyes and smiled.
It was the first time Aruru has seen her smile like this, and she has a bad feeling about it.
“It’s… Lord Shamash… right?”
She asked with a trembling voice. Being the priestess’ attendant for ten years, both had no secrets between them.
Anzu sensed her anxiety, and placed her pale hands onto hers.
“Don’t worry; I will not betray the people.”
Priestesses are supposed to stay chaste both physically and mentally for their entire lives, and this is extremely important for Lady Anzu, for she is the only one in the world who can hear the gods.
Aruru’s heart ached as she pondered upon the fact and watched as her lady leave for the human Elder’s palace.

“This place sure is high.”
After checking the surrounding for a final time, Shamash gave the rope in his right fist a spin over his head. At the end of the rope was tied a grapple hook made of steel, and on the other was his left hand held on tightly.
Enough momentum was gathered after a dozen spins, and he threw the hook skillfully towards an edge three levels upwards.
”Here… goes.”
Throwing his whole body weight onto the hook and rope, he began his climb towards his destination. As this was not the first time he has climbed up a vertical brick wall, it did not take him long to reach the corridor enclosed within.
Dressed in a full-body black suit which hugged his figure perfectly so that they did little to hinder his movements, the Shadow crept on silently as if he has blended with the darkness.
His target was a mysterious item that was said to be the most important for all humans’ future.
Although he does not know much detail, and where the item was, the only thing he needed to know was that it belonged to the corrupted human king and could fetch him a fortune worth a decade of food and warm clothing for winter.
“I heard it was….”
A middle-aged woman’s voice emerged from a bend behind him, and Shamash knew just what to do. Swiftly, he hides himself at a blind corner skillfully as voices began to make their way towards his direction.
“The gift from the gods, I wonder what that will be?”
Another woman replied to her friend beside her. As Shamash observed, these two were the chambermaids of the palace, evident by the basket of sun-dried laundry hugged in their arms.
“Heard it could do wonders without manually manipulating it!”
“Thank the gods for finally giving us humans a power like what the other tribes had.”
“But I have a bad feeling about this…”
“Me too… and I wonder why…”
Shamash watched on as the ladies strode past another sharp bend ahead of the corridor. Assured that there were no more living souls around, he crept out into the revealing moonlight again and arrived at his destination --- a storeroom at the third storey that was directly above where the item will be exhibited below.
A convenient opening on the floor was already prepared by him some time ago to facilitate the retrieval of the item, and he has replaced it with a strong plank on top of it to prevent anyone from discovering it.
Since the event required every single servants and guards in the palace, there will not be anyone here to find out about his deeds tonight.
Through a small peeking gap available between two unevenly-cut wooden floor panes, Shamash observed on while biding his time.

Within the four monstrous walls of the grand hall decorated lavishly with huge paintings, trumpets sounded, and various strings were drawn on huge musical instruments to weave a regal melody. The leader of the humans then arrived at the ceremonial venue.
King Nannar was his name.
His large body was dressed in a farfetched two-layered robe sewn entirely with golden silk threads, and the garment was so long at the tail that several servants had to lift the posh cloth above the marble grounds. As he waved, the exquisite rings endorsing his sausage-liked fingers sparkled and stung the eyes of those who bore silent grudges against him.
In the eyes of many courtiers present, he was a vain king who loved presents and praises. And as he filled his throne, the music died down and another announcement came to welcome the arrival of the high priestess.

”Anzu?”
Shamash watched the events with a slight surprise.
She was dressed up so formally that he almost did not recognize that she was the same person who wore plain white robes and grass-weaved sandals when she stayed at the Temple.

“L-lady Anzu, please.”
Nannar gestured timidly for the priestess to begin her speech. He was fearful of her powers.
Anzu nodded slightly and her explanation regarding the gift of the gods to the world began… in the form of a hymn.
