Two days ago, Gunter flashed out a map he obtained from Tiamat’s memory which showed the places the ship has been to in the past.
“According to past records, the temple which they have been to could have been this…”
According to the little genius then, much of the world is still unexplored even though the Machinas of humans were so high in technology. On the piece of map Tiamat gave, places like Rhodium City and Ruthern Woods were being depicted as blue dots. There is also a red dot at a piece of land not too far north from where they are.
”Temple of Bahaaj. Ancient human’s place of worship for the almighty god Anu.”
“Ancient humans? You mean the Humans actually worshipped the Almighty before?”
Even Kazo is confused by Gunter’s words. The history of mankind and how they became traitors of Anu was prohibited by the other races to be taught. But seeing that it may help Azure regain his memories, Gunter knew that he could not keep it a secret any longer.
“Humans were actually as devoted to Anu as all the other races of Earth. In fact, they were among the first to worship the god and practice Mu. As time pasts, their intelligence evolved to a level above ours to comprehend, and thus the invention of Machinas became inevitable. Their race flourished and built great civilizations thereafter, but they have already forsaken their religion. Since the age of the Machinas, Mu was no longer remembered by the people and soon became a lost gift from the forgotten god.”
And with great powers in hand, one can choose to destroy or create. What the humans chose was the former. Azure finds the information too much to digest. One thing he can be sure of though, that currently the Humans are making use of their knowledge to ride above all, and something must be done to stop this.
“Normally, it should take about three days. But the shrine is located within the Human territories, so it is not advisable to use this airship.”
“Which means…?”
And there they are now, traveling tediously across the lands northwards to get to the temple. A Human city, Vanadium, should be appearing anytime soon before the sun sets and hour later. Vanadium is located at near the center of the entire world, and thus it became a city of trading among all races. Spices, machinas, clothing, food and many other things were being sold and bought everyday in this established metropolis , and thus racial differences does not seem to be of a problem here. Even so, Gunter suggested Azure to dye his hair and pupils black like humans’ while he and Kazo wore wigs to conceal their ears.
Lilith sprang forward and approached Azure curiously for the first time ever since they met. As she appeared right in front of him and is reversing in her track, she held up her hands and clamped Azure’s face in her palm.
”Huh?”
“Hey, A…zure?”
”Y-yeah?”
He was terribly shocked by the girl’s action. She is now looking so close at him that there was a moment he swore their noses met. From this distance, her green eyes spoke of her innocence like never before. But that does not seem to be what the girl is thinking about.
“I was wondering… can you show me your Mu which they spoke about so much?”
The sunny girl whispered a ‘Pretty please’ under her breath and her eyes sparkled with excitement while Azure sighed. He tried to look at the grass below, but since his face was still being fastened with her hands, his eyes shifted to the other scenery faraway instead.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t know how to.”
“…………… Ahhhhh but I’m so bored!!”
Throughout these few days of knowing this self-proclaimed Juhna, apparently boredom is the only thing lethal to her. She took out the flute fastened to her waist belt and placed the mouthpiece below her lower lips. Holding the ivory-white musical instrument horizontally in place with her delicate fingers, she gave a strong blow of air into the mouthpiece to start the music.
The tune starts off slow and steady, and upon reaching the chorus, the tempo increased a little. Despite that, Azure could feel a melancholic and nostalgic flavor hidden within the melody.
He has heard the tune before, and he is very sure about that. Perhaps some time in the past, somebody has performed it to him. Instinctively, he hummed along. A few minutes passed, and the flutist concluded her short performance with a satisfied bow. Somehow, he felt strangely rejuvenated.
”Forgot to tell you, my sister is a Mu user too~ apparently she can heal with her horrendous song.”
Kazo’s abrupt interruption received a kick right in the face from his sister, while Azure stared at him with a why-didn’t-you-tell-me-earlier face and followed by a serves-you-right expression from Gunter.
“So you knew this song?”
Lilith asked, surprised and curious at the same time when she heard Azure humming along with her performance.
“Maybe in the past. What tune was that?”
”Ma—“
Before the hyperactive girl could finish, Gunter managed to cut in and express his intellectuality.
“Madain Seri, or ‘The maiden’s prayer’. It was an old song sung by the ancient races to praise the Almighty. This song dates back to the era where the ancient races used to roam. It was a common song then, but not all people were able to sing it. Maidens, or priestesses if you would like to call them, were said to be messengers who were able to communicate wi---“
And the little Juhna began to talk on and on.
”Let’s get away from him.”
Lilith pulled Azure away forcefully by his sleeves with a bulging vein on her temple, leaving him clueless and confused. While she find Gunter a nuisance, Azure thought that learning the history might be interesting.
“Anyway, where did you get that flute from?”
While he asked, he could faintly hear Gunter’s singing some distance away.
”Nice eh?” Lilith gave him a huge Cheshire-cat-liked grin, “Brother Kazo said he found it together with me when I was a baby. I think my parents gave it to me as a keepsake before dumping me outside Ruthern Woods, but… whatever!”
Looks like her past has been a sorrowful one, Azure thought deep while locking his brows. Seeing his frowns, Lilith clapped his cheeks with her palms again, and that was a really loud one.
“…”
”Why are you so expressionless?! Oh goodness! You only lived on this world once, Azure, ONCE! So smile, will you?”
Smiling seems like the most difficult thing to do for him. Anzu told him that he was a loner, perhaps he really is.
“I’ll learn next time.”
His answer left Lilith jumping around in anger. Really, she thought furiously, smiling does not need to be learnt!
The sun sets finally and a lighted up city could be seen some distance away. Vanadium is close within proximity now. As they walked along the cooling lands and on the brink of reaching the city in sight ---
“W-WHAT?!”
Several men dashed out of the thick bushes surrounding the area and caught them by surprise suddenly. Lilith screamed as the men stealthily grappled their throat to render them immobile. When Gunter took a look at their captors, he was shocked to know that they were not Humans, but from another race ---
“Kurts.”
