“You are half right, little one. We are bounty hunters. Forgot to introduce myself, I’m Red.”
The female Kurt holding Azure pulled his head closer to hers and spoke with an airy tone --- Seems like she is the leader of the group. Whatever it is, veins could be seen popping out of Gunter’s forehead when he heard the word ‘Little’.
“So… this is the boy with Mu? His eye and hair color is different from what the bounty drawn.”
With two more Kurts holding him in place, Red used a cloth to wipe off the black dye from Azure’s hair to reveal the icy blue color.
”Nice hair color you have there. Your pupils are not of their original color too…”
“You are a traitor, Kurt woman! Betraying the other races to help the humans!” Kazo shouted angrily while trying to hit the Kurt with his fists. Gunter shook he head and signaled for him to stop.
“Kazo, it is unwise to fight Kurts when the moon is out.”
”Your little friend is right. Unless you want to court death, feel free to try us.”
Red seemed to have grown used to these kinds of comments. The Kurts holding Kazo then took the cue from his boss and with a strong pull, the Juhna’s bushy wig fell off to reveal his pointed ears. The same goes for Gunter, but Lilith was spared due to obvious reasons. After casting an extra glance at her, Red turned back to Azure and spoke,
”Two Juhnas, one Human girl… and you.”
She beamed. The Kurt wore a glossy wine-red sleeveless vest which was tight fitting and low cut enough to show off her assets, and her matching tights enclosed by her thigh-high leather boots carved out the slender legs of hers. On her beautiful features, she colored her lips a passionate red. Azure was not really sure whether that was from a lipstick or perhaps she has just feed on somebody, because according to legends, Kurts fill their stomachs with blood from their victims. The whip hanging by her hips emitted a rather eerie aura.
“Take them back!”
When they reached Vanadium finally, both Azure and Gunter noticed that there is something a little odd about the people’s attitude towards the bounty hunters. The civilians were mostly humans, and all of them seemed to be constantly casting disgusted glares at the Kurt. And true enough like what Red said, the brick-red walls of the city were pasted with a lot of bounties, including Azure’s.
“Hey Azure! Nice picture you have there!”
Kazo tried to add some mood to the dull walking, but it seems like he has made things worse as Gunter let out a weak sigh. Lilith managed to kick her brother on his back despite her hands were being tied with thick ropes. Apparently he does not know when to use the appropriate words during certain occasions.
Despite the hostility they faced, businesses never stop running at Vanadium, be it at day or night. Shops and buildings here were of single-storey and their basic color was made up of black and white to contrast the neon signboards hung boastfully on top of them. On reaching the subterranean cells, the Juhnas and Lilith were being thrown into a small cell while Azure was taken away to a separate place.
“I can’t believe you really got them.”
The prison janitor, a human, gasped sarcastically at Red while rubbing his beer belly in contentment. Seems like the hidden animosity towards the Kurts were everywhere, Azure thought in silence.
”—?“
“This is an anti-Mu device, so it should shut off your linkage for good.”
Red ignored the janitor and explained as she cuffed Azure’s wrists with a thick metallic bangle. There is a certain degree of exhaustion carried in her deep voice, as if she was tired of everything. With the device in place on his wrists, Red turned around to prepare to leave.
“I’m collecting my rewards.”
She finally spoke to the janitor, who then unwillingly passed her a huge bag of gold coins.
“Enough of your pride, Red, it’s time to face the truth. Remember, without us, you bunch of Kurts are nothing more than slaves!”
The Kurt lowered her head in silence, took the money despite the humiliation, and left without a word. She mentioned some words under her breath, but Azure could not catch what she said as her long blonde locks obstructed the view of her face from the behind. Whatever it is, it sounded as if she had said,
“I’m sorry.”

“Scarlet!!”
A young Kurt struggled hard to be freed from the numerous hands restraining her movement. Despite the pain, she wailed and called out for her little brother, who was being taken away right in front of her. She was only around sixteen then, and a few inches taller than her only living relative in the world.
Scarlet turned around with a little bit of difficulty due to the chain on his neck. And it was due to this device that he could no longer speak a word. This is to prevent him from performing the required incantations of his Mu. The siblings have been living in seclusion with their fellow kinsmen at far western lands, apart from the worldly affairs until this day --- The day when half of their race was being annihilated.
It was the Humans, together with their formidable Machinas, that brought about their doom.
Being one of the few born with possession of Mu, Scarlet was spared and will be brought to the Empire to become their slave. Although he could not express his feelings through his lips, his tears would have told his sister of his final message before embarking on the journey of never-return.

Resting her back against the thick tree trunk and with her legs crossed on the adjacent branches, Red opened her eyes slowly and wiped away the sweat on her forehead. It has been a long time since she last dreamt about her dead brother who was captured by the Empire eight years ago. Somehow, Azure’s face appeared in her mind once again.
“Perhaps,” she thought, “He is the one... Is that what you want to tell me, Scarlet? “
”A penny for your thoughts, boss.”
One of her friends caught up with her deep thoughts and interrupted. As he walked up to her steadily on the thin tree branches, several others dropped down from higher above and joined in.
”So it’s you, Pug. I was just… admiring the moonlight.”
She lied. She has been waiting for a Mu user who is willing to rebel against the Humans for too long, and she has finally met one. But she cannot leave her kinsmen behind. Being the leader of the race, she knew the price she will have to pay for standing up against the humans. She has given up on her pride and freedom to exchange for the well-being of the Kurts.
“There is only one way out. I have to kill them.”
