”Can’t believe that three days after I started exploring the world, I’m being thrown into a metal cage!”
Still, she was being ignored.
“OI MISTER!”
Lilith’s rowdy shouts finally woke up the janitor who fell asleep standing. Apparently he is not very fond of being waken up forcefully and is thus in a very foul mood. As he glares at the girl in the cell disgustedly, a last bit of self control exercised prevented him from sending his Machina right into her cell to kill her.
“No more of this, girl, or you’ll pay.”
“What will happen to us?!”
”…The two Juhnas will be sold to the nobilities. As for that strange boy, he will be sent to the Empire. You… I don’t know. Okay? Man I can’t believe Red that idiot even brought these midgets along.…”
The janitor sent more swearing words into the air, cursing the lady Kurt who has never once dared to challenge him. After checking that the keys to the cells were still in place in his waist pocket, he got back to sleep once again. Annoyed, Lilith gave the metal walls a hard kick to vent her frustrations.
”Ouch!!!”
Kazo and Gunter frowned, for there is nothing they can do.
On the other end of the prison, Azure sat alone in silence. From this distance, he has heard the conversations, sometimes rather unwillingly. He wanted to talk to them, but could not do so without the janitor listening. Carrying out a conversation is almost impossible in this place.
A slight jerk on his wrists restricted by the anti-Mu device caused the two objects to knock each other, creating a crisp clanking sound of metal. Strangely, even though his powers have been contained, there is something amiss. He felt… strange.

“Boss, are they here yet?”
Wearing a shade and a thick poncho, Pug hid in the shades of the trees near the southern gates of Vanadium, through which Azure and the others will be coming out from. All the other Kurts wore similar coverings as him, as they could not stand the blazing sunlight. Plastering the binoculars’ lens against her shades, Red crouched low on the crown of the tree and continued to eye the wide-opened gates with maximum vigilance, ignoring the piercing heat.
The sound of latex wheels rolling along the earth could then be heard. It started off faintly, and was slowly increasing in volume. Out of the gate emerged four Machina vehicles made of a hardy but transparent element and had huge wheels attached to their sides. True to the Human’s technology, these vehicles were able to move by themselves.
The time has come.
With a signal from her hand, the Kurts leapt from the trees and landed right in front of the carriages, shocking the guards as well as Azure and the others who were confined within. Red stepped forward, still in her shady outfits, and raised the blood-red whip curled up in her grasp. This signified her will to fight.
“Hand over the prisoners, now!”
She released the gasps and gave her whip a warning crack against the grounds, stirring up the sand. The guards jolted backwards in fear at first, but their pride as the Empire’s soldiers allowed no cowardice. Thus, they held up their machinas to defend their duties.
”What audacity, Red! Do you know what it means to defy the Empire?”
Despite the loud, imposing voice by the chief guard, the lady in front of them appeared indifferent.
”I know.”
”Why are you saving us?”
Azure asked, but all the Kurt did was smile confidently.
”Perhaps you are the one saving us all.” She thought in secret.
Kazo thought that would never happen to a traitor of the other races like her. Gunter watched on the conversation with a doubtful expression, while Lilith cheered for the Kurt with all her might.
”I have betrayed too many, and betrayed my own heart. This boy over there is the only hope for the world, so I can not let you kill him!”
As she pointed towards Azure, his eyes widened a little. The ‘Only hope for the world’… He thought she was being exaggerating.
Without any more words, Red bent her torso slightly forward and with her whip held at her eye level, she then dashed forward in high speed. Her comrades followed right behind faithfully, with their wills so strong, that even the heat and sunlight were not of hindrances anymore. The guards managed to defend themselves from the first blow right on time, but were soon overwhelmed by the strength of the night creatures whose battle skills outshone theirs tremendously.
This was especially evident in Red, whose prowess far surpassed all her other comrades. There was once Lilith swore that she saw her sending five men flying with a single swing from her whip.
”Fire!”
However, more guards came from the city to aid their kind and soon the tables were turned. No matter how fast the Kurts can run, their speed was of no match to the bullets of the Machinas. Many of them were hurt by the little metallic studs which could sink into their skins within a second. And with a number like this, they will have a hard time dealing with all of them. Azure and the others watched in panic, but they could not do anything. Just then---
”What… is this feeling?”
Just like the previous night, even though Azure’s Mu is restrained, he could still feel a certain kind of energy being on verge to spill out. Perhaps… he thought, his Mu is not being contained after all.
”I’ll have to give it a try, or the Kurts will be in danger!”
Uncertainty and doubt still lingered within his thoughts. After all, Red was a Kurt who has betrayed the other races. But that was not of his concerns right now, since they were now risking their lives to save them.
”Come out now, please!”
No matter how much he begged, his Mu is still showing no signs of appearing. As he tries on harder with his restrained hands, a huge axe hacked downwards right in front of him, just a few inches away from his face. Shambled into pieces, the machina vehicle is no more.
“You are free now, so run with your friends!”
A muscular Kurt turned back and grinned weakly at him before leaping off again to get rid of the ever-increasing number of guards. He has thrown away his ponchos which limited his movements to go all out with the Humans. With only the shades protecting his eyes, his skin sweat profusely as if it was melting. Ignoring the pain, he swung his huge axe towards anyone who dared come close to Azure.
Kazo grabbed Azure’s sleeves to pull him away from the battlefield together with Gunter and Lilith. Another Kurt has gotten back their confiscated weapons, and escaping should be a breeze. Azure hesitated, for he could not leave the man behind to face his obvious doom.
”For you, boy, I am proud of it.”
A shiny bullet entered the Kurt’s left arm, wedged itself deep within his muscles, and deposited pain into his senses. The Kurt collapsed, followed by many others caught in the suddenly rain of Machina bullets.
