Xiao You sighed. She had been thinking about her parents a few moments ago when her friends had interrupted her. She wondered how they were doing. It’s been 6 months since she last saw them. She missed them terribly. Life in Canada has not been nice to her family for the past few years. The initial years in Canada were hard. It was only when Xiao You met Yeye, did her parents’ and her life turned for the better.
Bringing her thoughts to more pleasant memories, she started to think about Yeye. Yeye, whom she adored with all her heart, is currently residing with her. In the absence of her parents, Yeye had acted as her guardian, living with her, and trying at all times, to minimise the feelings of yearn whenever Xiao You thought about her parents. She had known Yeye in Canada, when an accident took away a partial of his memories (partial memory loss) for a few months. Seeing that Yeye was also their fellow countrymen, her father offered to put up Yeye in their house in his moments of needs. There were no form of identifications available to contact his next-of-kin, and as a result, he ended up living with them for a few months. Within the period of time, Xiao You had always tried to be there for him, encouraging him to be strong mentally and physically.
Upon his recovery, they have discovered that Yeye was actually SET TV chairman, Xu Ruo Gu, and was residing in America. At that time, Xiao You was already at the point of graduating from her college, and had received the admission for Harvard University. After a few months of association, Yeye had felt attached to her, and offered his residence in America while she was studying there.
She broke out of her thoughts as she heard her cellphone ringing. Intrigued at the overseas call that was flashing on her phone, she picked it up. “Hello, who’s there?”
“Xiao You! How are you? “, a familiar voice answered.
Xiao You shrieked, “Jie!”
“Wei.. you don’t have to let everyone know you are talking to your jie you know!”, Tian Bian answered cheerfully. “I missed you! Been busy at school? It’s been a while since you called home!”
“Yes. Terribly busy, and I’m all stressed out at the moment, what with the results being out in the next few days, and I’ll be officially graduating! How’s ge?” Xiao You asked.
“He’s still as workaholic as ever! I’m almost at my wits end with him! Sometimes, I think all he cares is SET TV, and not about me anymore!” Xiao You tried to stifle her laugh when she heard it. Just then, she heard a murmur from the other end saying, “You know very well that’s not true. Don’t tell me you want me to prove it again. I’m thoroughly drained by you, you know!” the voice groaned.
“Jie, please pass the phone to ge! I want to talk to him too!” Xiao you asked enthusiastically.
“Hold on. Xu Zeya! Xiao You wants to talk to you!” Xiao You sighed when she heard Tian Bian hollering over the phone. “You never change do you?” She thought, smiling to herself. Tian Bian, would always be like this. All along, Xiao you had believed that it is due to the nature of her work that Tian Bian became like this. Being a singer, it was required of her to be confident, hardworking and talented. And, Xiao You is proud to say that her jie has brought the role of a singer to the point of perfection.
Zeya and Tian Bian were both Yeye’s grandson and granddaughter. In fact, Zeya is the adopted grandson, and Tian Bian is his actual granddaughter. It was after some time that Yeye actually acknowledged Tian Bian as his actual long-lost granddaughter. All of these, were Zeya’s doing. Yeye had adopted Zeya as he was very old-fashioned in the past. He used to believe in only having males in the handling of the business. But over time and obstacles, Tian Bian and Zeya had managed to convince Yeye on the notion, and their love for one another. Xiao You had grown very close with them during the past year, and, they had also come for occasional visits to see Yeye and her.
“Hello girl! How you doing there? How’s Yeye?” At the sound of the concerned voice, Xiao You snapped out f her reverie. “Fine ge! I missed you. Don’t worry about grandpa. He’s fine. He nags even more as he gets older. But no worries about him ok?” Xiao you reprimanded him slightly.
Zeya has always been like this. Ever since she knew him, he’s always shown concern over others more than himself. This, was what, had also gotten Tian Bian and her exasperated whenever this habit of his acts up. Shaking her head, Xiao You chuckled and heard Zeya asking “What’s with you? Why you laughing alone?”
Hearing Zeya’s confused voice, she was unable to restraint herself any longer and burst out laughing. Hearing Tian Bian’s laughter at the other end, she held on to the laughter for a few more minutes.
Still laughing, she said, “Ge, don’t worry about anything! If all goes well, I’ll be able to bring Yeye, my parents and myself back to Taipei!" She teased. "Right! Phone bill's expensive! Will talk to you again!” With that, Xiao You ended the call. Shaking her head, she thought about her god sister and brother, and shook her head helplessly.
As she kept her phone in her bag, flashes of her being despondent and hurt silently crept into her mind. She thought about the times she went through, and thanked the lord that Zeya and Tian Bian were there always, to make her feel better. Without them – their support and all, she really could not imagine where she would be now.
