With a broken heart, Xiao You returned to Canada, only to slip into depression for the next few months. The forlorn look that she always wore to school, shutting herself in the room, was enough to let anyone take pity on her. It was only when – she met Yeye, who had unintentionally, managed to draw her out of her depression as she became focused on taking care of him, that she began to take things in her stride. As time passed, she tried to nurse her broken heart, seeking solace in Yeye whenever she needed. Upon Yeye’s recovery, she was introduced to Zeya and Tian Bian, and together, they managed to pull Xiao You back from her emotional wound and let her step even more confidently into the society.
In recent times, being the student that she is, she hardly has anytime to think about Ximen. In fact, it has been a long while since she last thought of him - until today. But now, all she feels is something akin to regret, nothing – no feeling, at all, to indicate that she has not yet recovered from her setback. Feeling more confident than before, she decided to set her thoughts aside, and head straight for home.
“Yeye! I’m back!” Hearing no reply from Yeye, she asked, “Auntie Chan. Where’s Yeye?”
“He’s in the study room miss. On an international phone call with Shao Ye.” Auntie Chan answered and headed back to the kitchen. Curious on what Yeye is doing since he hardly works now, she crept to the study room, just in time to see Yeye placing the phone back into the receiver.
Yeye happened to see Xiao You creeping in the corridor and cleared his throat. Turning beet red from being caught for sneaking in the corridors, Xiao You straightened and greeted him.
“What are you doing at the corridor young lady?” Yeye teased her, with a tinge of amusement. “Trying to eavesdrop on my conversation again?”
Shaking her head, she scolded Yeye slightly. “You work too much Yeye! You’re supposed to relax here and let me accompany you! If you overwork, and tire out, ge is going to scold me for not taking proper care of you, again!”
“Darling, if you must know. I was on the phone with your ge! I was not working! Don’t jump to conclusions again girl! You know that is a bad habit.” Yeye nagged. Wondering when the tables had turned on her, Xiao You can only nod her head and turn around, intending to head to her room when she heard Yeye called her. “Xiao You”
“Yes Yeye?”
“I was wondering. Have you thought about what you want to do after you graduate? It’s only a month away. I have some plans for you. Are you interested?” he asked, suddenly looking all serious, and every inch the SET TV chairman that he is.
“What’s up?” curiosity lacing her voice.
“I’m proposing of putting you as the regional manager of our branch in Canada. What do you think about that?”
Surprise flared in Xiao You’s eyes. “Oh no! That is too heavy a responsibility for me to carry Yeye!”
Yeye looked at her, with a confused expression. “Why not? You are soon-to-be a Harvard business graduate. You’ve shown intelligence and maturity that I rarely see in young woman nowadays. You want to provide a superb life for your parents. And most importantly, you’re someone that I trust since Canada is the second most important regional branch next to our headquarters. “
“But, but, even though I may be all that, I am still someone with no experience!” Xiao You argued.
“Experience may be important. But so is expertise. You’re going to be a graduate with business management knowledge. You have the necessary knowledge needed in running the branch. And if you want experience, you can approach Zeya or myself. Who else can give you better experience than the both of us?” He argued back.
Xiao You stood rooted to the spot. “I’ve got no confidence Yeye.” She whispered silently. Yeye looked at her, and softened at her worried expression. Holding her hands in his, he tried to assure her. “What matters most is that we have the confidence in you dear.” At his words, Xiao You looked up, with questions in her dark brown eyes. “We?”
Realising her confusion, he smiled. ‘Yes. We. Both Zeya and me.”
Looking even more confused, she said in confusion. “Ge?” Now, ge is included in the conversation too?
“You think I have never discussed this topic with Zeya?” Yeye asked, surprised at her naivety.
Yeye and Zeya had actually thought about her future for her, when she, did not even dare to think too much about it? “No. I didn’t think you will be discussing about me other than that of my well-being!”
Yeye continued. “Well, you’re wrong my dear. Everything that is of you concerns us. You know that. Surely you didn’t think that Yeye would only think this much for you?”
She knew that Yeye dote on her. She also knew about his past with regards to the male convention. And now, he had actually offered her a post, the highest post, in Canada? Suddenly, understanding dawned in her eyes, and she began to understand the main reason behind his proposition. Her parents and his love for her. Eyes misting, she ran and gave Yeye a hug.
Yeye chuckled. ”I take that as a yes then. Go on and try it out. Rest assure that if you perform below expectations in the company, you won’t be given the leniency!”
Feeling more confident after knowing that both Yeye and Zeya had the confidence in her, she promised. “I promise I will try my best not to disappoint you! Thank you so much Yeye!”
Still clinging onto him, Yeye stroked her hair, trying his best to make Xiao You feel better at the current moment.
After a while, Xiao You disengaged herself from Yeye and proceeded to her room, intending to make a long distance phone call to Zeya.
