Chapter 3

Bosco hid himself under a huge, shady tree, away from the hot, scorching sun. Myolie was due for an assignment on the beach this early afternoon, and the shooting would not be done until sunset. He began thinking about an excuse to cover up the blind date, since tomorrow was the day already. Myolie was a smart woman, and since he was a pretty lousy liar, he had to make it as realistic as possible.

“Alright, let’s have a 10-minute break first!” The director announced, and Bosco ran up towards Myolie.

“Have some water first.” He passed a bottle to her.

She took it, and gulped down the bottle of water thirstily. Bosco used a tissue to carefully wipe away the perspiration on her forehead while his other hand was holding onto a mini electric fan.

“Our boss wishes to meet you.” Bosco tried to sound as casual as possible.

“Oh? What is it for?” Myolie turned to look at him with a frown.

“Well, our modeling company is collaborating with some big corporate companies, and we’re looking out for potential spokespeople. I recommended you during the general meeting.” Bosco said, putting on a forced smile.

Myolie stared at him for a moment, before nodding her head, “Alright then.”

“It’s set tomorrow. But you’ll be going yourself. I won’t be able to accompany you.” Bosco informed.

“Huh, why? I’ve never met the boss before. It’s better to have you by my side.” Myolie said, before touching up on her make-up.

“Ah, you’ve to learn to be more independent. Don’t worry, I’ll provide you the details about our boss so that you can recognize him, but then please watch your behavior since after all, he’s your boss.” Bosco answered, looking away in another direction.

She sulked in displeasure at his rejection, but still agreed to turn up alone for the meeting.

“You’re more handsome.” Bowie said.

“I know that.” Raymond stared at his own reflection in the mirror.

“You’re richer. After all, you’re one of the successors to Dad’s company.” Bowie continued.

“Definitely so!” Raymond nodded his head rapidly.

“Ugh, then tell me why do you think that woman won’t fall for your charm?” Bowie threw up in his arms in frustration at his younger brother.

“Well, my weakness is that I’m a bachelor. Who knows whether that weird woman has got a taste for married men only?” Raymond said.

“Raymond, all I can say is that the fate of Christine’s marriage is entirely in your hands. Snatch that woman away from Wong Hei. I know that you’re capable of that. I’ve full confidence in you.” Bowie patted on his back, and walked out of Raymond’s bedroom.

Raymond continued to stare at his reflection, “Raymond Lam, she’s only a woman. You can do it.”

The confidence in him returned. Now, it was vital to leave a good first impression on her tomorrow. Retrieving her photograph on his dressing table, he started to fantasize about this lady whom he was going to meet – What is she like? Is she what those tabloids described her as? Why did she choose to be a family wrecker?

The curiosity about this lady started to creep into Raymond’s mind.

“Alright, have a good night’s rest. I’ll call you tomorrow.” Bosco said, passing over her luggage bag.

Myolie bit on her lower lip. She was contemplating on something.

“Are you sure that you can’t come along tomorrow?” She finally asked again.

“You’ll be fine by yourself.” Bosco smiled and patted on her head gently.

She pouted her lips, having failed to persuade Bosco to change his mind. Murmuring a ‘goodnight’, she made her way into the house while Bosco watched on from outside. He felt bad inside for firstly, having to hide up the blind date, and secondly, having to disappoint her. Bosco had already prepared the consequences for lying to Myolie, but he too actually wished that she would leave Wong Hei.

“Myolie, we’re having red bean soup for supper. Do you want a bowl as well?” Melissa stood up and asked when she saw Myolie walking up the stairs.

Myolie hesitated for a while. She had no reason to go against her growling stomach. Walking towards the dining room which indicated that she wanted a bowl, Melissa happily went to the kitchen to get a bowl for her.

“Be careful, it’s hot.” Melissa said.

“Where have you been for the past two nights? Bosco’s place again? Are you ever tired of seeing your face on the tabloid headlines everyday?” Wu Dan reprimanded.

“So what do you take me and Bosco for? Why can’t I even have my supper in peace?” Myolie rebuked.

“Then stop seeing that married man. Stop making a fool out of yourself and our family…” Wu Dan shouted back angrily.

“Wu Dan, let’s not talk about this now. Myolie…” Melissa tried to intervene and stop the quarrel.

“Stay out of our affairs.” Myolie turned to glare at Melissa.

“Myolie, your mother’s birthday is a week away. How about…” Melissa wanted to ease the tense atmosphere, but it was a tactless method.

Myolie stood up furiously, “I don’t wish to hear anything about my mother from you. This is the last time I’m warning you, don’t ever talk to me about my mother. You’ve no right at all. You’re the reason that she died.”

“It’s not Melissa’s fault at all! Why are you pushing the blame on her? I really don’t wish to tell you about this, but your mother was the…” Wu Dan defended his wife.

“No, Wu Dan!” Melissa quickly interrupted, and pulled him towards her, “Let’s return to our room now.”

Myolie watched on in a state of confusion. Wu Dan’s sentence was being cut off by Melissa. What did her father wanted to tell her regarding her mother, which even made Melissa looked so panicky and worried?

Once the couple was back in their bedroom, Wu Dan sat on the edge of the bed still fuming over the argument earlier on.

“If you hadn’t restrained me, I could have told Myolie about the truth.” Wu Dan said.

“We’ve made a pact never to reveal the truth to her.” Melissa reminded gently, joining her husband on the bed.

“But she’s not going to let you off so easily.” Wu Dan argued.

“Well, I’ll just give in to her then. Her temper is exactly like yours,” Melissa smiled, “It’s better that she hates me. Myolie’s relationship with her mother is very close. I know that you don’t bear to hurt your precious daughter by letting her know that her mother was the one having an affair outside instead of you, am I right?”

Wu Dan nodded his head in despair. In this situation, he had to choose to sacrifice a party – his present wife, or his only daughter? In the end, he had decided on the latter, but fortunately, Melissa supported him as always.

“He’s the one with a pink tie? Okay, I’ll take note of that.” Myolie said over her cell phone.

“When you’re finished, give me a call. I’ll be waiting for it.” Bosco reminded before their conversation ended.

Raymond was sipping his second cup of coffee. He had arrived early at the café. His father had instructed him repeatedly to put on a pink tie for identification purposes before he left the house. Soon, he saw the lady walked into the café, as she looked around for him. Their eyes met momentarily, and she was wearing a smile on her face as she came over towards him.

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Lam.” She greeted and shook his hand firmly.

“Nice to meet you as well, Miss Wu.” He said.

“Cappuccino, please.” Myolie told the waiter.

“I love your smile – very sweet and cheerful.” Raymond commented truthfully.

Myolie blushed, and muttered ‘thanks’ at his compliment. She had not expected her boss to be so young. The reason that she had insisted that Bosco was to tag along was because she was afraid that she may not be able to strike a conversation with old men, but now, the situation turned out otherwise. The chat went on pretty smoothly, as Raymond inquired more about Myolie’s personal life, while Myolie thought that Raymond was merely doing his job in knowing more about her on whether was she suitable for being the spokesperson. Raymond could infer that Myolie did not like talking about her family at all, even though he knew from his father that her mother had passed away already. His current impression of her was not that bad because she was very polite and well-mannered.

“How about relationships?” Raymond asked.

“Hmm, I guess I don’t wish to touch on that topic, Mr. Lam. I don’t think this will affect my work.” Myolie rejected answering his question politely.

“Well, I don’t really care if it affects your work. I’m just curious that such an attractive and beautiful lady will actually be a family wrecker. Do you believe in retribution?” Raymond sounded sarcastic.

“What are you talking about? Please don’t insult my professionalism, Mr. Lam.” Myolie became extremely serious.

“So you’re a professional in breaking up others’ families, or being a third party? Truthfully speaking, I’m pretty surprised by you. You don’t look like someone whom can’t get a partner. Why do you go around seducing people’s husbands?” Raymond did not wish to stop.

“Mr. Lam, I respect you as my boss, so this conversation shall end here.” Myolie stood up with a grave look.

Raymond stood up as well, and grabbed hold onto her elbow, refusing to let her leave.

“Answer my question first. Why did you agree to this blind date when you’re already seeing someone else? Are you a two-timer as well? Huh?!” Raymond demanded.

“What blind date? Aren’t we supposed to be talking about the contract being the spokesperson for the corporate companies?” Myolie was confused by his words.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. All I know is that both of our fathers want us to be together, that’s all.” Raymond said, being exactly as confused as Myolie.

Myolie pondered for a while. She recalled about Bosco’s sudden reluctance in joining her. She had always known that her notorious reputation in the modeling arena would not possibly earn her any major jobs or projects, but this time, her boss would actually plan to use her.

“Whatever it is, we can never be together.” Myolie replied curtly, before pushing away Raymond’s hand.

“You’re not going off until I say so.” This time, his grip on her was even tighter.

Getting irritated and frustrated, Myolie grabbed the cup of cappuccino and splashed it right into Raymond’s face, causing him to yelp out in pain and release her. With that, Myolie quickly made her way out of the café. Raymond did not wish to let her off so easily. Snatching a towel from the waiter, he chased after Myolie while wiping his face and coat clean.

“What a jerk…and Bosco’s going to get it from me.” Myolie mumbled furiously as she stood at the side of the pavement, looking out for a taxi.

“Hey you!” Raymond shouted out.

Myolie turned around and started to fluster a little. Before she knew it, Raymond had dragged her away with his firm grip on her hand.

“Let go of me! It hurts!” She screamed, as passers-by looked on at this couple.

“Let’s have a bet. If you win, I’ll stop pestering you.” He suddenly stopped in his track and turned to face Myolie, whom accidentally knocked into his chin.

“Watch your way.” Raymond mumbled, rubbing onto the bruised part, while she glared at him, “What bet?”

Raymond flashed an evil grin at her. Since she had agreed, he was not planning to let her off so easily.

“The first person to finish these 20 mugs of beer, AND still not drunk, will be the winner. The loser shall do everything at the winner's bidding.” Raymond declared.

Myolie looked at the mugs of beer, as both of them stood at each side of the long table. This guy’s crazy, she thought silently.

“Are you afraid? It’s not too late to back out.” Raymond leaned forward and smiled.

There were many on-lookers surrounding them. Everyone was cheering on for her to accept his challenge.

“You…you should be scared of me instead.” With that, she grabbed the first mug and started drinking continually.

Raymond followed likewise, with his eyes locked on Myolie. Soon, all he could remember were the loud cheers from the crowd, and Myolie’s occasional gibberish, which he had little recollection on.

She turned to her side, and felt something beside her. Thinking that it was her blanket, she wanted to kick it away but it refused to budge. When did her bed shrink in size? She wondered dreamily.

He felt someone pushing against the side of his body. It got him really uncomfortable, and he leaned closer towards the person.

“Lin…da…Lind…a…” He murmured in his dream, while his arm went over the person’s body, and pulled it closer towards his.

She began to rouse awake from the warm hug. Slowly, she opened her eyes, and the sight before her almost made her heart stopped, as she began to open her mouth.

“Aaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!” The scream echoed out throughout the hotel room.
