Chapter 7

Raymond waited patiently outside the building, leaning against his car. Myolie would only be off around 20 minutes later. For the past few days, their relationship had improved significantly since they were constantly together after wrapping up their work. Soon, Myolie finished her work, and came downstairs to meet Raymond.

“Where’s Bosco? How about asking him to join us for dinner?” Raymond suggested.

“He’s having an appointment with the advertising company, so he can’t join us.” Myolie answered as she got into the car.

As they were on the way to the restaurant, Raymond informed Myolie about the family gathering which his father had told him.

“Family gathering on Sunday? That means tomorrow? But why so fast?” Myolie asked.

“Ah, my father insisted that you’re to turn up. He wants to introduce you to our relatives and family friends.” Raymond explained.

Myolie felt uneasy about the meeting. After all, it would be awkward for both parties due to her past relationship with Wong Hei. Raymond saw the hesitation and confusion in Myolie.

“You don’t have to worry. They’re all very nice people, especially my father. He’s so eager to meet you.” Raymond smiled, and reached over to hold onto Myolie’s hand.

‘Ah-choo!’ Myolie sneezed hard and quickly covered with a piece of tissue. Raymond reached over and touched on her forehead gently.

“Oh? You’re having a slight fever. Have you seen the doctor yet?” He asked concerned.

Myolie shrugged it off, “It’s just a normal cold. I’m fine after taking the cold tablets.”

“You aren’t feeling well, and you still work. Why didn’t you tell Bosco that you’re sick?” Raymond said, turning the steering wheel and drove the car off in a different direction.

“Well…” She paused for a while, “Bosco went through many connections before he helped me obtain a chance for an audition today. I can’t disappoint him.”

Raymond stopped the car by the side of the road, “Alright, we’ve reached.”

“Oh?” Myolie looked out of the window, “Why are we here?”

“To see a doctor, my dear girl.” Raymond replied, and dragged the reluctant Myolie out of the car, before both of them entered into the clinic.

“Yes, Mr. Smith. I can assure you that my model is really suitable for your company’s advertisement theme. How about taking a look at her profile first?” Bosco offered, handing a file to the Caucasian.

Smith hesitated for a moment, before accepting it. Opening the file, he glanced through the portfolio briefly, nodding his head occasionally. Bosco could see that he was pleased with Myolie’s profile. If she could secure this advertisement deal, it would aid in boosting her modeling career.

“I wish to meet her in person first.” Smith said, grinning lustfully at the photographs inside.

“Absolutely no problem, Mr. Smith.” Bosco answered with a wide smile, not suspecting the strange expression on the Caucasian's face.

“Let’s head home then, since you’re unwell.” Raymond said after the dinner.

Myolie nodded her head and yawned sleepily, “Ugh, why did you have to park your car so faraway? I’m so tired.”

Raymond chuckled softly, “Well, I can’t find any parking space nearby, so it’s not my fault right?”

“It’s your fault that I’ve to walk so much.” She pouted her lips unhappily.

“Alright fine, come on up then. I know what you’re trying to hint, Myolie Wu.” Raymond laughed, and lowered himself a little.

She grinned in delight, and got onto him. She loved the feeling of being piggybacked by him.

“Yeah, it’s so nice to be carried like this,” Myolie smiled and laid her head against Raymond, “From now onwards, whenever we’re together, I’ll just pretend to be sick or tired, and then you’ll piggyback me home.”

“If you like, I can piggyback you whenever you want. But don’t be sick, Myo. Don’t fall sick, okay?” Raymond whispered.

A strange feeling welled up in her heart when she heard Raymond’s words. Wrapping her arms tightly around him, she closed her eyes, and answered, “Alright, don’t be such a nagging, old man.”

“When will it be my turn to be piggybacked then?” Raymond asked, as they slowly made their way to the car.

“Hmm,” She thought for a while, “Wait till you lose some weight…”

“Oh? That means never?” Ah, that’s so unfair. I don’t want to carry you anymore.” Raymond joked.

“If you dare to let me go, I’ll kick you in your butt.” Myolie taunted.

Raymond giggled at her response, “Get some rest. I’ll call you when we reach.”

“Why aren’t you free today? It’s Sunday.” Sharon asked over the phone.

“I’m attending Raymond’s family gathering this evening. I need to prepare. Why not you get Bosco to join you for the concert?” Myolie said.

“Bosco? He won’t be interested if you’re not going.” Sharon replied.

“Are you kidding me? I thought the spotlight should be on you instead.” Myolie rebutted.

“Huh? What are you talking about?” Sharon was baffled.

“Oh well, what I mean…” Myolie was hesitant on asking about Bosco’s secret girl, “Isn’t Bosco fond of you?”

“What?” Sharon started cracking up over the other side, while Myolie got annoyed over her laughter.

“Hey Sharon Chan,” She spoke seriously, “It’s not funny alright? Bosco will be hurt if he hears your reaction.”

Sharon tried to control her laughter, “Okay, I’m terribly sorry, but what makes me you think…hmm…that Bosco’s secret girl is me?”

“Oh well, I pretty much guessed it. I thought for a very long time. It’s impossible that Bosco has a close female friend, other than both of us. So, it’s you that he secretly likes. Gosh, I feel so smart suddenly.” Myolie smiled to herself.

Once again, Sharon’s giggled so hard that it got on Myolie’s nerves, “I’m warning you, Sharon Chan, don’t ever toy with Bosco’s feelings. He’s such a nice guy. It’s your good fortune to be loved by him.”

“Okay, let’s say…I mean this is just a hypothetical question,” Sharon said, “What if you were me? What will you do if Bosco likes you?”

There was a long pause over the phone. Myolie was giving some serious thought over Sharon’s question.

“Hmm…hmm…I think I’ll like him as well. But I can’t now because I’m attached,” Myolie answered before continuing, “But you’re not like me. You don’t have a boyfriend now, am I right?”

“Yeah, yeah. But come on, that Raymond Lam is just a fake boyfriend, isn’t he? I thought you dislike him.” Sharon questioned.

“I…well…I…that’s none of your business, Sharon Chan.” Myolie stuttered.

“Fine, as you wish, I’ll call Bosco now, and we’ll go on a date together.” With that, Sharon hung up the call. Shaking her head, she sighed, “In the end, you still have no idea that Bosco’s secret girl is you.”

“Hello, my brother.” Bowie entered into Raymond’s bedroom.

“Are you so free lately? Why are you constantly popping into my room every now and then?” Raymond asked in a sarcastic tone.

“I’m just concerned about you,” Bowie smiled and sat down on a chair, “So is she coming over tonight? Ah, I’m so looking forward to it.”

Raymond turned around and warned Bowie, “You better not spout some nonsense to her. No, to play safe, please don’t talk to her at all for tonight.”

Bowie chuckled softly, before his attention drifted onto the books on Raymond’s desk. Walking over, he saw a pile of recipe books stacked at the corner of his desk.

“Oh? You’re learning cooking? Or is this baking?” Bowie flipped through one of the books.

“Hey!” Raymond quickly rushed over and took the book away from Bowie’s hands, “Please respect my privacy.”

“Ah, so what’s next, Raymond Lam? How do I propose to her? Or is it how do we have a baby?” Bowie fell onto the chair laughing hard.

Raymond’s cheeks blushed to a rosy pink, whilst he hastily put away the recipe books into his drawer. Clearing his throat, he spoke in a serious tone, “This is supposed to be a surprise for Myolie. You better not divulge anything to her.”

“Okay, Ray, do you still remember how both of you got together? It’s because of a contract. A bet! You’re supposed to make her fall for you, and not the other way round.” Bowie said.

Raymond looked away, “I know. But…if I do like her, then everything I do in future will be for her only. And then, she slowly falls for me. So, isn’t that what I wanted in the first place?”

Bowie thought for a moment, “Well, it sounds logical though.”

“Of course it does, and if you don’t mind, I wish to get changed now.” Raymond opened the door and showed his brother out.

“Phew.” Raymond heaved a sigh of relief.

“Do I look alright?” It was Myolie’s tenth time asking Raymond this question.

As usual, Raymond gave her a reassuring smile, “You look great.”

The family gathering was a pretty grand event, having more than a hundred guests attending it. The couple walked past several groups of people, before Raymond managed to find his father chatting with a few business associates. After the introduction and a few minutes of mingling, Raymond dragged Myolie off to the buffet table as he was starving already.

“Let’s see, what should I eat?” Raymond mumbled to himself, as he scanned through the row of yummy food, before he caught Myolie grabbing some pepper crabs onto her plate. “Hey, you aren’t supposed to have that.” He said, and took away the crabs from her plate and put onto his plate. “I’ll eat them for you.” He grinned.

She sulked unhappily, “Just one please.”

He shook his head, “You’ve not recovered yet. Have some light food instead. How about some congee?”

Angry at not getting what she wanted, Myolie walked away and found a seat nearby before Raymond joined her. He placed the bowl of congee in front of her, and continued with his meal. Unable to fight her hunger any longer, Myolie reluctantly settled for that bowl of pathetic congee.

“Oh no, here they come.” Raymond mumbled, as he stared at the three women walking towards him.

Myolie looked up and wondered what Raymond was talking about.

“Don’t speak a word when they’re here.” Raymond said, before one of the three women took a seat beside Raymond.

“Oh RayRay, it’s so long since we last met. You’ve gotten chubbier though.” The woman in her mid-fifties gently pinched onto Raymond’s cheek.

Raymond gave a weak smile, and greeted, “Hi Aunt Mary. You’ve gotten prettier as well.”

Myolie almost choked on her congee, and started coughing hard, whilst Raymond quickly patted on her back gently.

“Oh, so who’s there? Your new girlfriend? Where’s that old one? I mean Lina, no, Linda.” The woman asked as she scrutinized Myolie from head to toe.

“She’s Myolie Wu, Aunt Mary.” Raymond said.

Myolie smiled at the woman, whom gave a scowl in return. She could somewhat sense the hostility coming from the woman, and to make matters worse, Raymond did not seem to be on her side either.

“She looks quite pretty.” The woman commented.

“Ha, she’s still passable with this look. You look better, Aunt Mary.” Raymond answered with a laugh.

“Yeah, Raymond’s right.” Myolie added on reluctantly.

“Oh my, what a sweet girl. She must be really good to you, am I right, RayRay?” The woman asked.

“Ha, so-so. She can be better.” Raymond replied.

After another few rounds of ‘interrogation’, the woman finally decided to leave the couple alone and left the table. Myolie’s expression immediately changed at that instant.

“So which other part of me are you still unsatisfied with? Better to tell me now than embarrass me in front of your relatives.” She questioned.

“I’m not. I was…just being…modest…and humble about my girlfriend.” Raymond replied with a smile.

“Oh really? Do I look so bad? Or do I have to treat you better next time, Your Majesty?” With that, Myolie stepped on his foot hard with her heels, got up from her seat and walked away.

Raymond yelped in pain silently, and rubbed on his shoe, “Hey Myo!” He stood up and watched her disappear into the crowd, “Ugh, how about my pepper crabs?” Raymond finally chose to chase after her.

“Stupid Raymond Lam. Stupid, dumb man.” She cursed under her breath, trying to find the washroom.

Suddenly, Myolie accidentally bumped into someone and almost fell backwards. Fortunately, the person managed to catch hold of her in time. Looking up, Myolie realized that it was Wong Hei. He stared longingly at her.

“Are you okay?” He finally asked, letting go of her.

She nodded her head, and smiled weakly. Wong Hei was about to speak when someone else joined them. It was Christine. Hooking her hand around Wong Hei’s arm, she gave Myolie an unfriendly look, while Myolie looked away in guilt.

“We got to run now, Aunt Christine. Bye!” Raymond appeared from nowhere, and held onto Myolie’s hand, taking her away from the awkward situation.

Once they were outside the mansion, Raymond looked over at Myolie.

“I’ll send you home.” He said.

It was complete silence throughout the entire journey. Raymond occasionally peeped at her, and found her to be staring out of the window deep in thought. Soon, they arrived at her home, and he pulled over in front of the gate.

“We’v…” He turned around and said, but realized that Myolie was sound asleep in her seat, and facing Raymond.

Raymond did not disturb her. Instead, he quietly lay on the side of his face on his seat as well, looking at Myolie directly.

“Ah, her skin’s so smooth and clean.” He thought silently to himself as he gazed fondly at her sleeping expression.

Gently, he reached over and touched on her cheek, as his eyes slowly traveled down to her lips. Raymond started to lean forward to her face, having the urge to kiss her. However, he suddenly stopped, and withdrew from Myolie immediately.

“What am I doing?” He cursed himself for trying to take advantage of Myolie.

Looking over at Myolie again, he whispered, “And what have you done to me, Myolie Wu?”

If it was in the past, he would not have bothered by her reaction. But now, it was a different story entirely.

“Are we meeting Mr. Smith now?” Myolie asked, as she and Bosco walked into the hotel lobby.

“Yes.” Bosco nodded.

“But don’t you find that it’s an odd place to discuss serious matters here?” Myolie questioned.

“Oh well, Mr. Smith is currently using his hotel room as his temporary office. You don’t have to worry, I’ll be accompanying you.” Bosco reassured.

“Alright.” Myolie agreed after having Bosco’s assurance, as they entered into the elevator.
