Chapter 9

“Myolie? Where are you? You’ve a photo shoot in another 2 hours. You need to get ready.” Bosco said over the cell phone.

“I…I’m not feeling well today. Can you help me postpone it please?” Myolie asked.

“Alright, have you seen a doctor yet? Do you need me to accompany you?” Bosco asked in a concerned tone.

“No…I’ll be fine by myself. Also, I hope to take a few days’ leave as well, is that okay?” Myolie said.

“Yes,” Bosco replied, “Are you sure that you’re fine?”

“Yeah, you don’t have to worry. I’ll call you again.” With that, Myolie hung up, and shut her eyes, as she lay on her bed.

How did things turn out so complicated now? After knowing the truth, she found it hard to face Bosco. In addition, the more Bosco was good to her, the more she was afraid of accepting his good intentions. She felt guilty for taking advantage of him now. She was scared that she would hurt Bosco’s feelings in the long run. Suddenly, she was frightened of everything related to Bosco.

On the other hand, Bosco’s mind was not put at ease after ending the conversation with Myolie. She was acting strange and weird. Had her relationship with Raymond run into problems? Or did she have another quarrel with her father? She used to tell him everything in the past, but now, she seemed to be keeping everything to herself.

“Myolie?” Someone called her name from behind.

Myolie had thought that it was Raymond since he told her to wait in the backyard garden whilst he got changed in his room. Turning around, she realized that it was Wong Hei instead. He smiled at her, before sitting down beside her on the bench.

“How are you lately?” He asked.

“I’m fine. How about you?” She asked in return.

“I’m doing fine as well. I’ll be going over to Singapore next week to be in charge of the new branch there. Christine will be coming over with me.” Wong Hei answered.

Myolie smiled at him, “So you’ve patched up with her already?”

He nodded his head, and sighed deeply, “I’ve come to realize the person whom I loved most, and fortunately, it isn’t too late yet. So, I’m sorry, Myolie.”

She shook her head, and extended her hand out, “So are we still friends?”

“Definitely!” Wong Hei said, accepting the handshake before standing up to leave.

Myolie watched him walk off. She felt a great sense of relief, as if a huge burden had just been removed from her heart. In fact, she was glad that things turned out the way she wanted it to be, if not, she would probably have a hard time trying to solve the situation. However, it also made her recall about Bosco’s issue which still remained unsolved. Just then, a pair of hands covered her eyes from behind.

“Say the password before you’re allowed to see light again.” The man said with his hands still in front.

Myolie recognized it as Raymond’s voice, and started to giggle softly, “What password are you talking about?”

“I love you. Say ‘I love you, Raymond’. Say it with sincerity, of course.” Raymond replied.

“I rather remain like this.” Myolie playfully rejected.

Raymond removed his hands, whilst Myolie turned around to face him, and saw his disappointed expression as he sat down beside her.

“I see that someone’s disappointed.” She commented.

“Who says so? Even if you don’t say it, there are a million other women out there whom are eager to say it to me.” Raymond stuck out his tongue at her.

“Well, are you trying to lay a trap for me?” She eyed at him suspiciously, “Don’t ever think that I’ve forgotten about the contract. I’ll never forget it, not even for one second.” With that, she stood up and walked off first.

“Women are so over-sensitive and ignorant.” Raymond mumbled to himself, before getting up to join Myolie, “How about a movie before dinner?”

“Wow, are you in a good mood recently, Bosco? What’s with the treat tonight at this restaurant?” Sharon asked in surprise.

Bosco smiled, “Well, am I really that stingy and mean before this? Actually, I’ve got something to ask you.”

“Oh, I see. So there’s a motive.” Sharon nodded her head, “Well, go ahead and ask. I bet it must be something to do with Myolie.”

“What’s up with her these days? Has something occurred in her family or in her relationship with Raymond?” Bosco asked.

Sharon thought for a while before replying, “I don’t think so. She didn’t mention anything to me.”

Bosco’s expression saddened when he heard her answer. If even Sharon had no idea, he did not know whom to turn to.

“Well, what’s wrong with her anyway? Maybe you’re over-sensitive, Bosco.” Sharon said as she glanced through the menu.

“She didn’t answer my calls nor reply my sms-es for the past few days. Furthermore, she took urgent leave all of a sudden without any particular reason. Are these enough to warrant some worry?” Bosco asked.

“Hmm,” Sharon looked up at him, “that indeed sounds like Myolie Wu when she has a problem. Hmm…could it be…? It can’t be…”

“It’s alright if you’ve no idea.” Bosco let out a sigh before signaling for the waiter.

“By the way, why did you suddenly confess to Myolie? I had a shock the other day when Myolie told me about it.” Sharon asked casually.

“I never did that.” Bosco answered with a frown.

Now, Sharon looked more confused than Bosco.

“Well, I did hint about it, but after that, I quickly brushed it off as a joke. From her expression then, I thought she believed that it was merely a joke.” Bosco added, sensing a dreaded feeling welling up within him.

“Uh oh, I thought that you already confessed, so I just related to her about the whole secret admiration thing you had for her during the past few years.” Sharon mumbled softly in shock.

Bosco sat there, not knowing what to respond. Was this the reason? Thus, she was trying all means to avoid him now, until she probably found some method to face him. Bosco did not like this feeling at all – the feeling of being exposed. Of course, being secretly in love with someone is nothing shameful about, but…but…

“If I can turn back time, I will rather choose that Myolie knows nothing about it.” Bosco thought silently in his heart.

It was his tenth yawn during the screening of the movie. Raymond turned over to look at Myolie, whom was giggling and laughing at the show. He tried to focus his attention on the story itself, even if he thought the humor was bad. ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary, I want to watch that’ – Myolie had told him before he purchased the tickets, and he gladly obliged even though romantic comedies was not to his liking at all. In fact, he hated them. Leaning over, he whispered to Myolie that he was going to visit the washroom for a while.

“Ugh, there’s still another half an hour more to go.” Raymond commented as he looked at his watch, before turning on the tap to wash his face.

At that moment, he heard loud voices and noises outside the Gents. It sounded like a quarrel between a couple. Walking out to see what the commotion was all about, Raymond was surprised to find a familiar figure struggling to release herself from the man.

“Hey, let go of her!” Raymond shouted at the man.

“This bitch owes me money.” The man shot back in fury, still refusing to let go.

“I’ll pay for her. Let her go now.” Raymond said, pulling the lady to his side.

The man grinned gleefully, when Raymond passed him a bank check of fifty-thousand dollars. He then turned his attention to the lady.

“Are you alright, Linda?” Raymond asked in a concerned tone.

She nodded her head meekly, before burying her face in his chest, and started sobbing. Raymond gently held onto Linda and stepped back from her, before taking out his handkerchief to wipe away the tears on her face.

“Why did you owe such people money? Is there anything wrong?” He asked.

“It was the previous guy I went out with. He made me as his guarantor.” She replied softly.

Linda looked into Raymond’s eyes, before wrapping her arms around his neck, and kissed him hard on the lips. Raymond was initially taken aback by her sudden action, but he responded to the passionate kiss instinctively. At that moment, he thought of Myolie, and quickly broke away from the smooch.

“Don’t do this, Linda.” Raymond said, as he took in a deep breath, trying to calm himself down as well.

Linda ignored his words, and wanted to pull him in for another one, but Raymond held out his arms in front of him.

“No, please.” He emphasized.

“Why?” She asked, since it was very un-Raymond to reject her.

“No particular reason. Just no.” He replied, looking at her seriously.

Linda turned and walked away after hearing his answer. Raymond quickly caught up, and stood in front of her.

“What do you want now?” She demanded coldly.

“You know my number, and workplace. Come and look for me if you ever need help.” Raymond said, before leaving in another direction.

“Where have you been? You didn’t even catch the ending.” Myolie commented when she saw Raymond running towards her at the entrance of the cinema.

“Sorry, I…got a stomachache.” Raymond cooked up an excuse.

Myolie stared hard at him for a while before buying his excuse, “So, are you alright now? No wonder you seemed so restless just now during the movie. Now that I think of it, you always seem to be like this when we’re watching a movie.”

“Oh really? I didn’t notice it.” Raymond tried to sound casual.

“Yeah, and it’s pretty annoying. Bosco isn’t like this at all when he watched movies with me.” Myolie commented.

“Don’t compare Bosco with me,” Raymond mumbled unhappily, “At least Bosco doesn’t dislike romantic comedies.”

However, he was unaware that his volume was actually loud enough for Myolie to catch everything he said.

“Oh? You don’t like such movies? But why don’t you say so?” Myolie turned and looked at him.

Raymond avoided her gaze, “Well, does it matter? You like it anyway.”

“Don’t be like Bosco whom gives in to me every time. I prefer guys whom are more direct and have their own stand.” Myolie answered nonchalantly.

“Geez, why is she mentioning Bosco for the entire night?” Raymond thought quietly in his heart.

It was complete silence during the journey back to Myolie’s home. They had apparently run out of topics to talk about. It was not until Myolie began to think of something, and wanted to seek Raymond’s advice.

“Ray, I’ve a friend whom got a question for me which I can’t really answer.” Myolie said.

“What’s it about?” He asked.

“Well, there’s this guy whom likes my friend, but she doesn’t really have that kind of ‘feel’ towards him. What should she do?” Myolie said.

“She doesn’t like him at all?” Raymond questioned.

Myolie nodded her head.

“Why not?” He asked again.

“Hmm…well……” Myolie tried hard to think of a reason, but could not come up with anything.

“Because she has another man in mind already, is that so?” Raymond had started to sense that something was amiss.

“I don’t know…I mean, she knows the guy is nice towards her, but it is just friendship which she’s hoping to have instead. Do you understand, Ray?” Myolie gazed intently at him.

Raymond caught her expression, and tried to sound casual, “Yeah, I understand. I understand it now perfectly.” Stopping the car right in front of her home, he turned towards Myolie and asked the final time, “So your friend really doesn’t like the guy at all? Not even a tiny bit.”

“I think so. Why are you looking so serious suddenly?” Myolie was curious.

“No, I just thought that maybe your friend will at least like the guy a tiny bit. It seems like a one-sided love to me.” Raymond looked away.

“I’m getting off. Goodnight.” She said, before hopping off the car.

Raymond silently watched her enter the house. At that moment, he felt like something heavy was lying right on top of his heart. This time, it was not only disappointment he felt. A tear uncontrollably streamed down his cheek, as he tried to fight the urge to cry. He had no idea why, but he just sensed that the person Myolie mentioned earlier on was him. Was she trying to hint something in advance to him? Why did he feel so insecure about this relationship suddenly? Where did his usual confidence go?

So, maybe the person whom she likes instead is Bosco, Raymond concluded.
